  2. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 9, 2008 -> 12:00 PM) From what Mully and Hanley made it sound like, Contreras yelled at Ozzie in a meeting and then stormed out of the room after the Ozuna decision was announced, and then refused to talk with Ozzie during the game. He's just passionate, like all Cubans. Haven't you ever yelled at your boss when a fellow employee was fired? And regardless of his pitching performance last night, his stuff was enough to vomit with rage. No fastball, and his forkball was hanging as if Jason Marquis and Kirk Sarloos were throwing it. Against stronger offensive ballclubs, it may not be pretty.
  3. QUOTE (dasox24 @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 09:31 PM) That website is pretty cool. I've been having a lot of fun with it. My name was 72nd in 1988 but has since shot up to 40 in 2007. Interesting... I guess parents are starting to realize if they want a badass for a son, they should name him "Evan." My name is old fashioned, as I figured. Kenneth was in the Top 20 1924 through 1964 (I didn't check every year in between, though). In 1985, when I was born, it had dropped to 47. Now it's at the 135th position. How the hell can Oscar, Cody, COLTON, or Liam be more popular? Also, here's a George Carlin bit on names. Sorry Kyle haha.
  4. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 09:15 PM) he says he's 80%. just sayin Oh, it would be fantastic watching Guillen let Garcia decide when to come out again. How many f***ing times did we watch games where Garcia started an inning he shouldn't have, only to give up a hit/walk to the first batter? I'm done with him. With Contreras, it's honestly going to take an additional month of these starts for Guillen to remove him. You know he won't do it, otherwise. Contreras is a Cuban (therefore he's proud), a veteran player, and has had success in the past. These will be the excuses. Honestly, if he's going to pull this no-forkball, weak fastball crap it'd be better if he were injured. Seriously, and I don't care how that sounds. We can't screw around with him while battling for a playoff spot.
  5. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 08:38 PM) Who isn't slaughtered around these parts? I was referring to the Sox organization and parts of the media. ie -- His wife handing him divorce papers before his first start. It effected his entire season, obviously. I believe I heard Gonzalez from the Tribune mention it on the Score as one of those preseason reasons to be optimistic ("Contreras won't have any distractions"). On Chicago Tribune live after one of Contreras start Phil Rogers threw it out too. I'm sure I've heard it on other occasions. If Ozuna were here, just imagine how much his forkball would be diving right now!
  6. Some of you may be interested in browsing this website. http://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/popularnames.cgi You're not cool unless your name is in the 100's.
  7. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 05:06 PM) The only thing that could kill this is if Harden goes to the DL for the rest of the year only a few starts in. They have to be anticipating it. Perhaps they'll see what Harden will provide now, take it carefully with him entering August and September, then have him healthy (which for Harden seems to be 5-6 starts) and throw him at opponents down the stretch/into the playoffs. It appears to be an October move more than anything. The possibility of Zambrano/Harden in the playoffs looks a hell of a lot better than Zambrano/Dempster. No one in the right mind would acquire Harden, expecting him to make all his starts between now and the end of the season.
  8. Oakland is 3.5 games out of the wild card lead. Certainly not in a position to sell, and neither is this package something I believe Beane just HAD to deal Harden for. When you factor in his last two decisions, and a history of injuries, Beane must have felt this game of waiting for Harden to remain healthy -- and reach his potential -- was lessening his value. The Cubs, as it has been previously discussed, aren't exactly going to regret dealing any of the prospects involved. Especially with their payroll. With their position atop the standings, and Sabathia's fat ass pitching across the border, there was nothing much to lose with acquiring Harden.
  9. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 3, 2008 -> 01:40 PM) The forest in my backyard is a blazin'. I walked outside, realized I couldn't see more than 6 inches in front of me, 5 minutes later the fire department shows up. Pretty crazy, good ole fireworks. Our windows were open too so our entire house smells like fire. You know who should have shown up? The police department. To fine your ass for shooting off illegal fireworks in our prestigious town.
  10. I've always felt Hawk needs someone in the booth to challenge him. Atleast present an opposing side to an argument. Or question him if he says something ridiculous. You'd think DJ is Hawk's black twin sometimes the way they seemingly agree on every baseball subject.
  11. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 11:10 PM) and the one that's lost 5 MPH on his fastball has been healthier over the past 3 years than Kerry Wood and he's arguably been better than Wood this season, even if he has 30 fewer strike outs. That's exactly my observation -- with his relative health over three season Jenks has lost velocity while Wood, who has endured injury issues for nearly a decade, is throwing just as hard as he did from day one. I've never suggested Jenks is the inferior pitcher, though. It has just been my unsubstantiated belief since last season that Jenks isn't long for this league. You expect hardthrowing pitchers to eventually lose velocity, but it seems to have happened much too quickly with Bobby. How effective will he be at 90-92 mph? I don't know, maybe he'd still be a decent middle reliever (4.00-4.50 ERA). Those are certaintly valuable, and I'm sure if the velocity drop occurs before he reaches free agency we'll still hold onto him.
  12. For all of Kerry Wood's injury issues over the years, it's amazing he's still throwing upper 90's; yet a certain pitcher on our team has lost five mph on his fastball in just three seasons.
  13. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 08:06 PM) Represent Ok. Image from last chat crew meeting at Bourbon Street.

  15. Nothing pisses me off more than relievers coming into the game not throwing strikes. Especially when you're up 6 runs in the 7th ining.

  17. Nice work breaking the news Palehose. These are the type of connections, even if it's just someone in the media, I love to know people at Soxtalk have.
  18. When Mariotti was on ESPN 1000 a few years ago, I was convinced (and I believe many on here were) that he was stealing material from Soxtalk. I remember one day listening to him at school thinking, "I swear I read an exact quote like this on Soxtalk," and sure enough, someone (believe it was YASNY) had already typed it several hours before his broadcast. And it wasn't a general thought or idea, either. It had to do with our poor offseason entering 2004.
  19. QUOTE (juddling @ Jun 25, 2008 -> 02:42 PM) Worst Carlin-death headline seriously....that's all they could come up with?????? LOL. Whoever wrote that article obviously had no idea who George Carlin was. Not one reference to his life as a standup comedian. He probably heard his name mentioned, browsed through Carlins IMDB trivia page and then put together some bits of information.
  20. Man, it just has the feeling of a game where Buehrle gives up a HR after surrendering a hit and we lose.
  21. Their fans are acting like they've bought into the hype too, that the Cubs should never lose at home. They're stunned! haha
  22. HAHA, SIT DOWN KOSUKE! If they can't end the game here against Blanco the Orioles deserve to lose.
  23. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 24, 2008 -> 08:47 PM) Eddings has a very large zone tonight, but I think that benefits the Sox greatly. Of course, we're up and Buehrle has the control to exploit Eddings' large strike zone.
