  2. If people are clamoring for Brokeback Mountain as a Best Picture lock in the Oscars, it must really be one HELL of a movie to defeat Munich. Best movie I've seen this year--probably in the last two or three. I would be shocked if Munich didn't win atleast two of the following four: original score, director, actor, best film.
  3. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jan 12, 2006 -> 11:43 AM) :headshake :headshake He isnt trying to shut the door in the 8th inning or something. He is the color man on the radio. Lighten up Francis. I wish I was as passionate about our radio announcers as you seem to indicate. I simply recall Singleton's past interviews, and I believe he's a rather passive person. I also would have believed the opening would have garnered the attention of seasoned radio analysts. That's not difficult to understand, I assume?
  4. What I dislike about this hiring is Singleton may eventually become an outstanding announcer, but we shouldn't have to develop new talent on the heals of a championship. The position should have been a key destination for any experienced radio announcer. Honestly, Chris seems too soft spoken. Almost a Darren Jackson clone. Will he be willing to entertain Farmers odd rantings or yell out in excitement following a pivotal play? I just can't imagine Singleton doing this. You can likely expect our USA Today title of Best AL radio duo to drop. Dramatically. I wish him luck, but I can't believe he was the best choice.
  5. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jan 12, 2006 -> 10:20 AM) Chris Singleton is one of the top-rated radio broadcast prospects in the system. He's a four-tool broadcaster. He has above average range, a pleasant voice, he's excellent defensively, and can talk for some power. He was a second-round draft selection and a lot is expected of him. He also shows nice speed out there on the :30 readers. I think the organization showed their confidence in Singleton when they traded both Rowand and Young. I'm pretty confident he'll be able to step in and contribute. I am worried about his bat-speed though. Another opportunity for me to include a few digs. Baseball Prospectus recently printed an excerpt dismissing Singleton's OAP (On-Air Percentange) as heavily anecdotal based. Apparently, his patience is lacking. VORA (Value Over Replacement Announcer) is roughly 89. Well below league average. White Sox nemesis and 40 year old virgin John Sheehan projects him as yet another subpar announcer from our weakened system. Billy Beane chimed in and gave a thumbs down--so you KNOW he's due for short career.
  6. Los Angeles: we have Contreras waiting for you. Williams: take Los Angeles to the cleaners. Let someone overpay for our players. We don't need Contreras traded; Los Angeles needs atleast one rotation position. Unless you expect Lowe/Tomko/Penny/Perez/Seo an attractive alternative. LA must feel some reserve with the rotation if they were negotiating with Weaver as long as they did.
  7. SSH, If this song emerges in the media I'll blame in on you for posting it.
  8. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jan 8, 2006 -> 03:55 AM) I'm suprised Tim Purpura offered that much for Miguel Tejada quite frankly. It shows how high the demands were from Peter Angelos and Jim Duquette, and how desperate Purpura is to upgrade his offense. In terms of starters if they did let Backe go, they've got Carlos Hernandez, Wandy Rodriguez and Equziciel Astacio available for rotation spots. Of course dealing has it pro's and con's, the pro's which you've mentioned above. I assume they'd let Chad Qualls or Dan Wheeler be the new closer. Any combination of Hernanez, Rodriguez, and Astacio would be a HUGE downgrade from Clemens and Backe. Their bullpen can't be expected to be as good without Lidge either. Even if Clemens return is guaranteed, playing two months of baseball without your best starter is enough to knock you out of contention. These are the moments Texas should take a chance and trade one, perhaps two, players for a stockpile of Astros' pitching.
  9. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Jan 8, 2006 -> 03:31 AM) Of course, projected future arm problems could be the reason that the Astros are willing to dangle Lidge as trade-bait. This is exactly my concern. Astros may figure, trade him now before inevitable arm troubles destroy his value. As for dangling Backe, remember they've yet to replace Clemens. He may return midseason, but that's admist the summer schedule. Are the Astros willing to start next season without Clemens, Lidge, OR Backe for the addition of Tejada? It sounds ridiculous.
  10. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Jan 8, 2006 -> 03:14 AM) That Astros offer is interesting. How about Contreras for Lidge and Backe? I would do that deal in a second. We get a stud closer and a decent young starter. You almost have to be leary of why Lidge is included. Sounds too good to be true. Why exactly would the Astros feel it's necessary to trade a young, cheap, effective (playoffs nonwithstanding) closer for Tejada? Backe as well. Watching him against us you'd swear the Astros would be insane to trade him. Are they that desperate for offense?
  11. My results were same as DK's. How many times will our liberal posters have to repeat this test so it doesn't indicate any preference for one race?
  12. It's bulls***. Why exactly would he want to stay on the Orioles again? I doubt someone changes their mind that quickly, considering no siginifcant moves had been done since Tejada first complained. It should be fun when Baltimore tanks around the beginning of summer.
  13. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 7, 2006 -> 09:34 PM) I wanted pitching prospects and up-the-middle prospects for Jose anyway, and this doesn't change that. Give me an A-Ball pitcher or 2 and a very solid up-the-middle guy and I'll be happy. This still doesn't change the fact that I don't want to lose Jose for nothing at the end of 06. Dodgers are apparently talking to Weaver about a long term deal. Hopefully a mystery team emerges and satisfies Boras' demand of 40/4. It amazes me the Dodgers are unwilling to forsake one or two prospects, perhaps a reliever, for Contreras. Honestly, is signing Jeff Weaver to a ridiculous contract a better alternative? It's irritating how a team with pitching as a organizational strength refuses to trade any. If Dodgers remain a holdout, I wouldn't mind igniting talks with Houston.
  14. QUOTE(SnB @ Jan 7, 2006 -> 09:12 PM) holy crap If you're thinking the same thing I'm thinking--"When the hell did they make 60 NOW's" I agree.
  15. QUOTE(That funky motion @ Jan 7, 2006 -> 07:54 PM) I expect to see Tejada traded on Monday. I'm not certain whether I believe him either. Although Tejada may simply be tired of the trade discussions and feel Baltimore best suites him. The way I figure, either Baltimore exhausted their attempts to trade Tejada and sweet talked him to remaining quiet, or Baltimore officials have asked him to express satisficaton with the Orioles to regain leverage. Duquette is fooling himself if he believes a "fair and reasonable" return for Tejada is possible. You know your organization is in disarray when two players (Konerko/Burnitz) accept lower offers to play for other teams. This Tejada situation only magnifies their troubles.
  16. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Jan 7, 2006 -> 07:06 PM) 3.) Last guy(s) in the bullpen -- Jeff Bajenaru, Arnie Munoz, Tim Redding, Paulino Reynoso, Sean Tracey, or various other non-roster invitees. Unacceptable to have anymore than one from this group occupy the remaining bullpen positions. If Contreras remains in the rotation and McCarthy in the bullpen, then it's understandable to place one of the above pitchers in the mix. None of them could be expected to improve much (if at all) over Marte of Vizcaino.
  17. TWO MORE POSTS UNTIL ONE MILLION. I dont' know what you people are talking about above.
  18. I'm thinking of finding an old thread where I've been posting and deleting several posts to screw with the official countdown. Someone is going to think they've had the one millionth post, only to look like a DAMN FOO.
  19. Just when Koskie thought he'd never have to see Marte again.... Better he destroys the Cubs and the remainder of the National League than our pitching staff.
  20. Looks like this is a situation we CAN blame on Bush. I know some are always looking for new venues to show their displeasure towards the president. Truthfully, I wouldn't mind if the system completely collapsed. I'm sure many major league officials wouldn't mind either. So many players and pitchers are playing for a program Selig invented to broaden baseball's appeal. Even though the Olympics basically covers this.
  21. I don't blame him. Even though Rollins is a quality player, you don't switch Tejada to thirdbase for him.
  22. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jan 6, 2006 -> 07:17 PM) If this goes down, it shows why Pat Gillick was so in demand by a lot of owners this off-season. All he's doing is asking the Cubs if they're willing to take Prior for Abreu. Doesn't prove much to me. He has no influence in whether or not Hendry is desperate and accepts the offer.
  23. It's possible Rosenthal heard new developments since the article's creation. Personally, I'd love a Prior/Abreu swap. I'm cheering for Mark to annually be among the NL Cy Young candidates. There are a few problems, however, with such a deal: -First--the contracts are nowhere near equal. We're talking a potential of 10 million difference between Abreu and Prior. Philadelphia either would include a portion of Abreu's contract or perhaps a top pitching prospect. -Second--the outfield was already full without Abreu; now it's overcrowded. I can't believe Cubs wouldn't allow Murton the opportunity to start. Makes you wonder whether or not he's part of a deal centering around Zito. Oakland's outfield situation is equally as crowded, but he's their type of player and I certaintly wouldn't believe Beane avoids him because of their outfield situation. Honestly, I wouldn't doubt a trade of Prior for Abreu/Top Prospect, then in return, Hendry packages Murton/Hill/prospect for Zito. Cubs wouldn't exactly need a cheap OF alternative considering all probable outfielders (Abreu/Jones/Pierre) would be locked up for several years. With the abundance of offense, Cedeno could then be penciled in as SS.
  24. QUOTE(fathom @ Jan 5, 2006 -> 11:39 PM) PIERRE God damn! I completely forgot.
  25. So who would patrol CF for the Cubs if Patterson is delt? Are the Cubs seriously considering promoting Pie now? Far as this deal is concerned, it certaintly shows how far Patterson's stock has fallen. A prospect not within the top-5 of the Orioles organization for Patterson? That's a risk I'd take.
