Wouldn't it be more inhumane to simply jail him for the remainder of his life? Cop killers are treated similar to pedophiles in jail, right?Let him suffer with three warm meals a day! Too bad he'll be on death row for quite a few years exhausting the appeal process.

The sole reason Brantley agrees suggests to me we're wrong. Patrick, however, has had his sights set on discrediting everything our team has done and I certaintly don't give a f*** about any of his opinions.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Oct 13, 2005 -> 11:21 AM) The ump did not give up a stolen base, nor did he hang one to Joe. But unfortunately no one will look at it like that.

You're right--I'd be absolutely livid if this call were to happen to us. Similarly, compare this to the intentional lean-in by Joe Crede in Oakland earlier in the year. Most realized he leaned into the pitch, yet still complained incesssantly despite it being the correct call. It's the nature of fans. However, this isn't exactly clear cut as ESPN makes it out to be. No definitive Jeffrey Maier moment. Again, two points here: One, the ball appeared to skim off the ground on superimposed replays provided by FOX; Two, whether or not you deem his fist-clinching motion as a strikeout, it's clear viewing tape he used the same motion throughout the game for strike calls. At this point, whether or not he verbalized the command is important. The umps not entirely without fault--his mechanics weren't clear. But it was Paul who took everything for granted. And remember, this umpire is relatively new and is trust into the national spotlight. He'll probably never find himself in a game such as this again. His career is in jeopardy. How composed would you expect yourself to be at the podium following a game in which the entire nation believes you cost the Angels a victory?

I don't believe the condition of a hat is an accurate method of distinguishing a die-hard White Sox fan. However, it's certaintly a good indication Two years ago, I purchased a vintage 1983 White Sox cap during the Cubs postseason run. Until last month, when I upgraded to another 1983 style, my hat had practically been through hell. It got to the point I couldn't wear it out in public anymore--literally. It had begun to develop an odd stench when I accidentally dropped beer on it.

How the umps will call the rest of the games

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Oct 13, 2005 -> 08:24 AM) For all the talk about "BALLGATE", hehe, it doesn't matter a damn bit if Joe Crede makes an out, now does it? Just a thought. I agree with this. Obviously, I'm not judging this play from an outside prospective, but it's difficult to place ALL the blame on the umpiring crew (which, apparently, nearly everyone outside Chicago believes). There was still a game left to be played after the call was ruled on the field. Make a good pitch to Crede and the inning is over. If the Angels are determined to win they will overcome this. -
Baseball Tonight did an outstanding, fairly detailed review of the 9th inning situation. Here are several key points discussed within the video montage: 1. Eddings had been consistent with the same fist pumping motion the entire game to desonate both a strike and a strikeout. Whether the specific call was strike one or strike three the same clinching motion was used. Thus, it's obvious to conclude the commands (ie--"you're out") were verbalized to the catcher/hitter. 2. The sweeping motion several Angels fans regard as an out was simply Eddings specificying no contact had been made. Again, consistent throughout the game. I consider this a perfect storm of circumstances which tied themselves together for our benefit. Edding's umpiring mechanics, questionable trajectory of Escobar's pitch, Paul's absence of basic fundementals, and Pierzynski learning from a similar mistake last season tied itself together for the rally. I know I'd be infuriated if I were an Angels fan now. But unless the call dictated the actual outcome of the game, which it didn't, you can't entirely blame the umpire. Did Eddings hang a breaking ball on a 0-2 count to Joe Crede? Compare this to Jeffrey Maier in 1996. His situation was decidingly worse; if for no other reason than it involved a home run. THAT is an example of an umpiring decision which directly effected the outcome of a game. Last night was not.

Watching Baseball Tonight, the issue appears to be concentrated more on the umpire signaling an "out" with his fist rather than the baseball scathing off the dirt. They must have conceeded the fact it hit the ground before deflecting into Paul's mit. Apparently, the body language is the issue here with BBTN crew. I heard quotes the umpire left his fist upwards in anticipation of Paul applying to tag.

I f***ING LOVE IT!!!! LOSERS OF THE WORLD UNITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HAHAHAHA The Yankees fans, of all teams, have nothing to complain about. When their bad officiating call occured it was acceptable--since it happened to America's team. -

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Oct 12, 2005 -> 09:23 PM) Right now, it's all that is going to be talked about but once game 3 starts this will be forgotten. As R&W suggested, if Sox win this series it'll be attached to our success. Think 85' Cardinals (blown call at 1st), 1996 Yankees (fan reaching out for HR ball.) -

QUOTE(redandwhite @ Oct 12, 2005 -> 09:12 PM) I agree, kap. It's a tough way to win, because if the White Sox make some noise this series and next, it will be overlooked for years. This is percisely what I fear. If this team advances farther into the playoffs we'll continually hear people discredit our run. It's inevitable at this point. We can sweep the remainder of this series AND the World Series and this game will find it's way into the discussion. -

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Oct 12, 2005 -> 08:58 PM) Why is Scioscia worried? Crede is just going to swing at crap in the dirt and strike out. Now Crede is in quite a bind. An opportunity to make up for his earlier mistake. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Oct 12, 2005 -> 08:53 PM) Is it me, or are these some of the worst ABs you've ever seen? It's obvious to me several our hitters are pressing. Extremely pressing. Now, Escobar is a quality pitcher; but the swings our hitters have had lends myself to believe they're not making this any easier on themselves. -

Absolutely atrocious AB for Konerko. Second in a row he's failed to check his swing on a ball low. This is becoming embarrassing. -
I fail to congratulate a mediocre pitcher hanging half of his pitches within the zone. Bartolo Colon, Ervin Santana, or John Lackey does this it's understandable. Paul f***ing Byrd? No.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Oct 11, 2005 -> 09:18 PM) Let's go, Mark "Big Game" Buehrle. That distinguished title doesn't belong attached to Buehlre's name. Although the Angles are one of the few above average clubs he's pitched well against, I believe both matchups were without Guerrero.

QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Oct 11, 2005 -> 09:12 PM) Thing is, ARow shouldn't have been bunting in the first place, not off KRod. You can't give him outs, and he's difficult to bunt off of. Rowand seemingly has this inability to direct the bat towards the direction he intends on bunting. Whether it's off Rodriguez or another pitcher, he's shown absolutely no ability to lay down a successful sacrifice bunt. I believe he was more afraid of swinging, and risking a DP, than producing a hit. And let's not even discuss Dye's mistake in the 6th inning. I don't want to anger myself anymore than I currently am.

So, this is how the Red Sox felt when absolutely nothing works out for your team, and seemingly every opportunity to score is squandered. Again, this is pathetic. And disgraceful. Pods can thank himself for failing to put down a bunt when it was needed. This game would have been tied. -

QUOTE(White Sox @ Oct 11, 2005 -> 08:34 PM) this is hardly a laughing matter. its an incredibly close game. I take it back. Guerrero's missed HR was good fortune. These last two AB's against Shields, however, have been HORRENDOUS. -
