  1. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 11:22 AM) I just don't like drafting guys in the 1st round without a decent fastball. He has a hell of a curve though and seems to paint the zone which is a sign of a fast riser. Drafting pitchers without a decent fastball should come as no suprise. It must be written somewhere only Minnesota, Oakland, and Cubs draft pitchers with live arms. These players are always available for these organizations to swoop in and draft.

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Jun 5, 2005 -> 09:54 AM) But at least I get to listen to 'My Midnight Confessions' (right title?) while I type -- it's something. Close. "Midnight Confessions" by Grass Roots. This JACK changeover is very unsettling for me. In addition to symbolizing corporate greed, it's quite malicious to immediately swap formats without prior notice. This entire fiasco sounds like the plot to a campy 80's comedy. The EVIL corporation has successfully shut down the traditional Oldies format. As a result, the main character (likely a nerd) finds a collection of caucasian misfits; possibly including one foreigner for comedy relief, to spread the word of Oldies-rock . This is where the craziness and hairball schemes ensue. It was odd tuning the dial to 104.3 yesterday afternoon and hearing Avril Lavinge. Afternoon prior, I heard Gregg Brown accepting requests for their 'Brown-Bag Lunch' special. :headshake While 97.1 will adequately satisfy my Classic Rock fix, it's a shame another radio company has fallen into this mix genre craze. Couldn't there have been a soft-jazz station willing to accept the slaughter of a corporate takeover?
  3. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 4, 2005 -> 01:56 AM) The Choadmeister was 2 for 4 with an RBI. He is now hitting .364 with a .462 OBP in 33 AB's. Time to bring him up, Kenny. Gload may be putting up great numbers, but does he bat 1.000 in pleasing Ozzie Guillen? Timo does.
  4. QUOTE(qwerty @ Jun 4, 2005 -> 01:11 AM) Still hating on me eh? Come on, you have to admit i am 1000000000000% better now and i actually think out things. I see plenty of people on this board now like i was then. Only difference is they don't post as often. I'll gladfully admit it. As numerous members have said before, it doesn't matter whether or not you post one word or several thousand. It's more of a friendly jab to point it out now. I'd estimate of my first 1,000 posts on Soxtalk, 70% were devoted to gameday threads. I recall several instances where I exceeded 100 posts in ONE day. However, during that time there was no active chat room. People legitimately looked to the thread for updates of the game's progress. Still, I had my share of post-whoring.
  5. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 3, 2005 -> 11:06 PM) Thats the whole point. Reminds me of another distinguished poster. Qwerty. How many one line posts did he start his Soxtalk career with? MERCY. I've never seen someone post "1-2-3" in a gameday thread more than him.
  6. QUOTE(rafacosta @ Jun 3, 2005 -> 05:46 PM) Chat!?!? Fill it up tonight. I'll be there.
  7. QUOTE(Brian @ Jun 3, 2005 -> 03:58 PM) As stupid as it may sound, today is Carl Everett's birthday and I bet that is why he is playing. Frank should be getting AB's before he has to sit for interleague games. Otherwise, you may as well as DL'd him or kept him in Charlotte for more AB's. You're correct. That's a very stupid reason for including Everett in the lineup. Although I wouldn't put it past Ozzie to go with his "GUT" on this move. Now, if Everett has hit well off Westbrook, we can just brush it off as coincidence. BTW, unless these ominous clouds quickly roll through Chicago, there might be several rain delays tonight.
  8. QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 3, 2005 -> 03:57 PM) Miguel Olivo wasn't going anywhere either.. :rolly Olivo was never singled out during trade discussions last summer. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=21178&hl= Most appeared surprise he was included. I intend to believe Williams if he says McCarthy isn't leaving Chicago.
  9. QUOTE(Dam8610 @ Jun 3, 2005 -> 12:19 AM) Eric stays on the A's for the duration of his contract and makes them pay him that entire salary while they have no chance of contending. There's another reason I don't want Williams to approve any trade involving McCarthy, and the (probable) transfer of a high percentage of Chavez's contract: we're providing Beane with more financial wiggle room over these next 6 years. I don't want Oakland to take our prospects, in addition to spending availalbe money on acquiring necessary components for their club. I enjoy watching this Oakland team collapse. What harm would be done if every general manager just ignored Beane? Didn't take his phone calls; looked the other way when he attempted to unload unwanted contracts. Let him draft his way back to contention. Just let Chavez continue to question the foundation of "moneyball" (aka mulder+hudsonball), and otherwise dissolve the sentiment among management and Chavez. Should make the next 6 years VERY interesting in Oakland.
  10. QUOTE(redandwhite @ Jun 3, 2005 -> 12:39 AM) http://oakland.athletics.mlb.com/NASApp/ml...t=.jsp&c_id=oak Sorry to burst your bubble, but there you go... Not that I'd expect him to say anything different. Too bad we'll have to endure endless speculation for atleast another month. Knowing Beane, he'll wait as long as possible to unload players to maximize their value. We're not getting him under Williams' typical strike-early model unless he overwhelms Beane.
  11. QUOTE(Wedge @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 11:06 PM) Is Konerko a solid contributor to our offense? I think at this point in the season you'd have to say no. At this point, no. Earlier in the season? Yes He's streaky and everyone knows how his monthy averages fluctuate. I do recall several games (most recently against Washburn in Anaheim) where he provided crucial hits for this club. Every run is important with this offense. I just don't envision Williams trading Konerko. Which contending team is so desperate for offense they would be willing to to trade a decent reliever or another solid, major league contributer for Konerko?
  12. QUOTE(CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 10:57 PM) Trade Konerko ( for good fielding 1st baseman who hits decent and a relief pitcher if we we can get that much since he will be a free agent , Chavez and Paulie's contracts basically cancel each other out ). Konerko may be a one-dimensional slug, but how would you justify to the fans trading one of our main power sources, in a pennant race, when lack of offense would be the sole reason for acquiring Chavez? Last offseaon would have been the ideal time to trade Konerok for a relief pitcher, defensive 1st baseman.
  13. QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 10:52 PM) The word I am getting is that Timo goes to AAA. We have too many OF'ers on the roster as it is now. That is the reason Ozzie had him play IB to rest Paulie, but Frank will now be the DH and occassional IB man. Frank--Occasional 1B? You're just speculating there, right?
  14. QUOTE(ptatc @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 08:24 PM) He's what 21 or 22. He shouldn't have too much more "filling out." Remeber Jack McDowell? He still hasn't filled out. BTW, Stick Figure rocks You don't believe it's possible he'll gain a significant amount of weight? Someone needs to hire a persona trainer to work with McCarthy over the winter months. Gain some definition, if nothing else. Look at this picture, and wonder to yourself how the hell he picks up a baseball.
  15. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 08:11 PM) Maybe, or McCarthy could be a worse version of Freddy Garcia who can't keep the ball in the park at the Cell. I'd reserve judgement of that until McCarthy pitches against a team not named the Texas Rangers. And he fills out his figure. Not much is guaranteed with McCarthy, but I doubt he remains a walking light pole. Talked with BHAM last week about McCarthy, and he said people have projected his velocity ranging from 94-96. He has the possibility of becoming a power pitcher with contro. Not worthy of trade bait in my mind.
  16. QUOTE(Seesox @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 07:23 PM) Pretty huge.. I hope that means Chavez will be in Black, White, and Silver in due time.. adios Crede and BMac We're going to regret including McCarthy in any Chavez trade..... Recall these days several years from now when Oakland fans are congratulating Williams for providing them with a stud pitcher. Meanwhile, Chavez continues to underperform his large contract.
  17. So if Pablo is designated for assignment, and picked up by another club, who becomes our UTL infielder? Harris can't field 3B. Unless Uribe relieves Crede, Harris relieves Uribe on occasions. Which can be done, I suppose. The point is, why the hell does Ozzie continue to believe Timo is worthy of a roster spot? I hope this doesn't relate to Timo's clubhouse connection to several Latin players. Although it probably does to some degree, because obviously his production doesn't justify his presense on this club.
  18. QUOTE(ptatc @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 07:41 PM) He will not be painfree. The key will be to see if he can deal with the pain and not compensate to the point of causing other problems. That's when they need to make a decision. It's not like he'll be fielding 1B during the National League trip next week. Just sitting on the bench. This upcoming Cleveland series is very important. If Thomas doesn't believe his pain is worthy of a DL stinct, I'd hate to guess how his attitude will change. One week off from batting/running in game situations--although I couldn't speculate if he'll work out with the team during this time--should help. Right?
  19. QUOTE(TLAK @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 07:34 PM) I think Timo played is way off the roster last night. Oz gave him a chance to compete for Ross Gload's role and he blew it. You know, that's a good point I overlooked until now. Most (including myself) thought Guillen placed Timo at 1st because he was, in Guillen's mind, the best option. While it merely may have been a move intended to determine whether or not Timo can field 1B for the upcoming national league games. If Timo PH's for Konerko late in a game, he needs to field the position. Timo proved his uselessness. For all his detractors, his bobble filled night yesterday may save our club from several more months of OMIT.
  20. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 07:27 PM) Sorry. I was being extremely sarcastic. I'm anticipating Frank will be put in the DL. Forgot the green. Thomas plays this upcoming series against Cleveland and experiences no pain, I wouldn't expect him on the DL. As I said in my last post, losing him two series on the West Coast against national league teams will also mean he's gone for two home series the following week. Not worth it unless he truly needs the time to heal.
  21. Because it makes sense to designate Timo for assignment, I don't expect that to happen. I'd like to add several more derogatory comments about Timo and Ozzie, but those are only fit for the chatroom. I don't believe Thomas will be placed on the DL, either. Minimum amount of days one can be on the DL is 15 days. Sox travel along the West Coast for only one week. He may not be useful in Colorado or San Diego, but he'll undoubtedly find himself in the lineup against Los Angeles and Arizona at home. I know his bat will be useful against those two clubs.
  22. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 04:41 PM) Maybe he is the 2005 version of the 2003 Paul Konerko. If he is, we'll have fun reminding ourselves of his career average and potential--until 2011. In 2003, when Konerko's struggles were of epic proportions, Sox fans were furious he was signed through 2005! Could anymore imagine dealing with Chavez's contract following several dismal seasons.
  23. QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 04:23 PM) If El-duque goes back on the DL and McCarthy is an Athletic. Then I can see KW making a move to acquire another starting pitcher. There is NO WAY we will go through that black-hole 5th spot again. Other insurance policies could be Cotts. He has been pitching pretty solid lately. So now Williams would have to make ANOTHER trade due to the addition of Chavez? All this for the possibility Chavez reverts back to old form. If Cotts in is the rotation, then that's yet another blow to our bullpen. You'd have only one left-handed relief pitcher on the roster. Obviously, Walker has shown he's not an option. Who's that leave, Munoz? LOL.
  24. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 04:19 PM) McCarthy did well against the Cubs but was shellacked by the Rangers. We lost both games. If we lost El Duque for the rest of the season, we would be in big trouble. Regardless, I'm not so sure McCarthy could save the team this season if that happened anyways. You avoided my question. Who do you pitch in place of Hernandez if he is on the DL, and McCarthy is gone?
  25. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 03:58 PM) Given that we have the 2 Cubans in our rotation and we expect them to get hurt, I'm still not comfortable giving up our best backup pitching option at this point. We're going to need the 6th starter to make this run. And even if he ends up going .500, just like he did against the Cubs and Rangers, that'll be a lot better than what we saw last year from our 5th starter spot. I'll agree Chavez is an upgrade from Crede, and I'm willing to accept that he'll probably turn his season around. But I'm not willing to remove that "Untouchable" label from McCarthy. That's the only line I won't cross. Good post. While not yet major league ready, McCarthy is still valuable to our current rotation. I would like the Pro-Chavez crowd to explain what would they would do if Hernandez needs another two weeks 'off'? Something which is a real possibility. Does T-BALL stand get the callup? Or Jon Adkins? If so, we're not in good shape for the stretch run. Whether or not Chavez is at 3b and batting close to his career AVG.
