White Sox GM Hampered by low Attendance
Maybe if your team did more than tread around .500 they'd fill up the park. Also, if we had a contributing minor league system, one that before 2007 was practically ignored, we'd be able to fill in positions from within rather than add millions from taking on a player from another team.

White Sox Acquire RP Tony Pena from ARI for Brandon Allen
This move proves Williams' confidence in his scouting department. I know Williams and company have done well, as a whole, these last few seasons, but the recent mess of last offseason (Swisher/Vazquez) really doesn't need to be amplified with anything resembling production with Allen. Atleast with Arizona and Quentin they had what they perceived as an excess of outfielders. It's not as if we're overwhelmed with prospects and could stand to lose a few.

White Sox Acquire RP Tony Pena from ARI for Brandon Allen
QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 07:53 PM) Yeah, this could very well be a move to get rid of Dotel. He seems to have probably a similar amount of value as Pena does, but we know we won't get draft picks for him, and this way we'll save money. Plus, Pena has the potential to be a lot better. However, I'm not gonna lie... I wouldn't mind making a blockbuster trade involving Jenks. I haven't been opposed to trading Jenks since 2007, but as of now, with Williams obviously intent on competing, it's just out of the question. Unless there's the once in a generation type of package for him that is impossible to reject.

Workout Tips & Tricks
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 09:09 AM) Still prepping for the power test? I hated that thing, and it has almost no bearing on job performance at all. There are a few departments that do something different - Lombard for example uses the Denver Test, which is an obstacle course of sorts. CPD also does something different. Palatine uses the power tests but artificially increases the standards a bit across the board. Yeah, at this point I could pass all the different tests (situps, sit/reach, bench press, 1.5mile run), but I'm trying to give myself a little bit of breathing room. The mile and a half run is the most concerning of mine, especially since we're at the mercy of whatever weather conditions or in door track conditions the testers throw at us. For all the runners out there you know training primarily indoors and then running outside in 90 degree weather or 10 degree weather is good for knocking some time off your run. Also, CPD does use the power test. Their test proctors are notoriously lenient with applicants in the initial power test, though. There are two power tests every applicant has to pass before the academy, and with with how slow everything moves with CPD they'll basically tell you that passing the first one was a gift and the second one wont be. I've heard of people struggling in every category only to be marked as passing.

Grief over celebrity deaths
I haven't personally grieved the death of a celebrity, but I figure there won't be another musician's death carrying this much attention (even if it's a natural death) until Paul McCartney. Probably the highest profile death of anyone in my generation. Lennon was before my time; only Princess Diana came close.

Michael Jackson still dead.
It was tough watching his daughter at the podium talking about Michael. It really hit home, for me, that he was a father. Of course you know he has children but seeing them there puts everything in perspective.

Workout Tips & Tricks
I was surprised to find out that taking two weeks off from running actually benefited me. For quite awhile I had been running three miles a day, four days a week, and was beginning to develop painful shin splints. After taking two weeks off, I just comfortably ran a 1.5 mile around 12:20. My fear was I'd be winded more easily, when it was in fact just the opposite. It was probably just an issue of giving my legs time to heal.

If you won the lottery, what would you do with your life?
I remember awhile ago addressing this issue of winning the lottery. It's the WORST thing that could happen to your life. Money changes everything; relationships, friendships, suddenly everywhere you go people want something. The most important part for me wouldn't be what I spend it on, but how I remain anonymous. Here's what I'd do, and I know I said it before -- I'd offer a proposal to someone rich (like Donald Trump) to split the winnings in half if there is absolutely no public acknowledgment of my involvement. Set up someone to claim the prize and address the media, do whatever you feel, but I in no way want anything tied to me. Even if that means lying to everyone and being selfish, aside from just my closest family members/wife, it's better in the long run. This way I could live comfortably, but not have the burdon of a large family (and my dad was from a family of 13, mom 11, so this applies to me) looking for handouts and wondering why they cant have a few thousand here or there.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 03:10 PM) We have tomorrow off...I think Ozzie's just tying to get Carrasco a few innings. Poreda will likely pitch in the 7th or 8th. However, this is another example of why Gobble is an absolute waste of space on this roster. Brilliant thinking from Guillen. Give a few innings to the guy who last pitched June 27th, and ignore the guy who hasn't pitched since that date as well. It'd be good if he can finish the game. I dont even want to see Thornton, Dotel or Linebrick

Why the f*** is Carrasco still out there? Honestly, at this point I'm hoping he gives up 5 more runs. If Poreda can't pitch today, he'll never pitch.

You know what's irritating, and it's that we all knew Poreda wouldn't find any consistent work, yet the entire "Oh, Buehrle and Garland were bullpen pitchers before they were starters" people began to resurrect an old argument. We had the SAME EXACT discussion with McCarthy. It's really simple -- our pitchers consistently last into the 7th inning. By then, it'll be handed over to the bullpen. Additionally, Carrasco will typically be the first long reliever out the of the bullpen if situations such as today arise. With Guillen, Poreda just isn't going to find consistent time to pitch. And yes, I'm sure he's having side sessions with Cooper. But he needs to find work, and not find himself more than a week between appearances. That's just ridiculous.

Gov. Palin Resigns (Quits)
QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 3, 2009 -> 03:14 PM) from talkingpointsmemo.com "Wow. It just gets better and better. Apparently one of Palin's rationale's for resigning is that she would not stand by while so many taxpayer dollars were being spent investigating her." I'll bet someone is close to uncovering something big. Maybe she was blackmailed into resigning? As you have mentioned, it doesn't really make sense to quit mid-term for the sake of helping her run for presidency, especially since its several years away and she could have used the time wisely to shore up some of her weaknesses from the last election.

Soxtalk's Biggest Loser Non Member Thread
QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Jun 19, 2008 -> 05:28 AM) Haha, I've completely forgotten about this this. Reddy, from personal experience, it's impossible to gain weight correctly. That is, avoid unhealthy foods; concentrate entirely on high protein items such as chicken. Too expensive for a college student to keep up with. Especially if you're like me, and need to compensate for a high metabolism. It was probably two months after my February post where I just thought, what the f***, and decided to continue working out -- but eat whatever I want to. And in large quantities. I had probably gained two/three pounds trying to gain weight the right way; how nutrionists suggest. I haven't eaten entirely junk food (still try to have some semblance of healthiness), but the results are more noticeable. Still gain muscle, but fat as well. Right now I'm about 175. Even now, five pounds below my goal, I still look fairly skinny. I'm thinking of 190 now. One year bump. I currently weigh 195 pounds. Although, oddly enough, I still appear to be skinny. My body appears to divide weight perfectly, because I can swear if you put up the current Flash Tizzle with the one from last year the differences would hardly be noticeable. I still wear the same pants I wore last year, and this is with 20 pounds added on. I still follow a meal plan consistent with the above post, which is essentially eating high protein/low fat items in addition to the occasional fat filled item. I've also made a habit to consume a lot of variety of Chunky soup. I just couldn't take eating any more chicken.

I've been following you whining about this sunburn for several days now. Even I'm beginning to laugh. It's probably funny because you're this pasty white guy (I'm guessing) who got burnt and it just looks ridiculous.

Iranian Election Thread
QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Jun 29, 2009 -> 11:56 PM) The revolution to overthrow the Shah took two years. This fight has been waged for 18 days. History doesn't always move as quick as CNN would like us to believe. Well, that's the truth, but even then, two years is a significant amount of time in this age of 24 hour news reports. It'll be forgotten quickly. Although, if say everything goes according to what happened over 30 years ago, we'd have to hope that the opposition group has nearly the same impact on the Iranian government that Ayatollah Khomeini had. So, not only would Khomeini have to be removed or relieved of his power to appoint a president, but he'd have to bring Ahmadinejad with him. Right? Another point is the old form of Monarchy government for Iran allowed someone to remain in power indefinitely. The interesting question here is if Ahmadinejad is still alive and in power four years from now, would they try the same tactics to assure he's reelected? I guess you can say there's atleast one beneift to these protests. And I believe until more comes out of it, these are nothing more than election protests. Revolution seems to be more of something you brand after it is all said and done.

Iranian Election Thread
So............how's that whole revolution business coming along? If this entire ordeal was a bet to be placed at Vegas, a lot of people would have lost money. Look at Honduras, if politicians or people within the military wanted Ahmadinejad gone he'd be out of there. He obviously has a huge amount of support, and all those fist shaking Iranians Tweeting and posting "REVOLUTION!" on message boards from both Iran and the basements of their parents homes didn't change a damn thing. Alright, now the entire world knows the Iranian people aren't in support of Ahmadinejad and the Iranian government rigged the election. So? Is this what we're using to convince ourselves the death of Neda and the other 20+ protesters somehow served a larger purpose? Sounds like a terrible cause to die for. Watch, everything will go back to normal and we'll slowly be reading the "Why didn't the revolution succeed" articles. And please, don't give me lame excuses about how it succeeded because of points in the preceeding paragraph, or how (insert consequence) will occur several years down the line. Four more years of our buddy at the helm. Better get used to it.
