The MLB lockout is lifted!
Lol, clearly. I actually kind of liked Garfien's 14 team proposal. ITs better than any 12 team scenarios I've heard. But I don't think its what MLB has in mind. But seriously, assuming $700K min salary is still on the table, $50M bonus bonus pool, $228M CBT increasing $2M a year.....if players don't take that, I think its fair to say they're being greedy.

FFS players, that's a fair deal. Take it. Just make the 14 team play-off the structure Garfein laid out yesterday, and I am fine wiht it.

Apple TV+ to have 2 exclusive games on Fridays
How much does Apple TV+ cost? Honestly not even aware of what it is. I assume this is something we'll need to subscribe to get access to the handful of Sox games that are on this each year?

The MLB lockout is lifted!
I actually think I prefer the 14 team structure floated around yesterday as opposed to any 12 team scenario where the 3rd division winner is playing a 3 game series.

I mean, can't say I agree that spending $ doesn't correlate to winning. If Dodgers and Yankees are running $300M+ payroll and the average of the rest of the league is $125M, I don't see how teams can compete. Could they lose in a 3, 5, or 7 game playoff series? Of course. But its nowhere near a level playing field. I'd love to see a floor, but its pretty obvious that isn't happening.

Yes, they're still $50M apart on the bonus pool. I do believe that is the 2nd biggest factor. I also think the players ask is a bit much. $40-50M growing by 2% a year seems like a reasonable compromise. Let's remember this is a brand new concept, and what the players are demanding is going from 0 to 80 in a millisecond. Nothing about that change is incremental.

What comments like this tweet fail to recognize is that there needs to be something in place to limit the big boys spending. Without some form of CBT, the Yanks, Dodgers, Red Sox etc are just forming their own league. I don’t know what the leagues caveats are tied to pushing the CBT thresholds above $220m, but ffs, just seems like this shouldn’t be what delays the season. Such a small % of the teams are even impacted and I don’t blame the little fish For wanting something to limit upper end spending.

Enter the other character who hates Andrew Vaughn.

2022 Offseason Plan Thread
Its fair to point out, but its also fair to recognize a much bigger red flag is Eloy's inability to stay healthy while playing a horrible defensive LF. He's a DH. Its time he come to grips with it. We have an in-house option who is already at least a comparable defensive LF who can certainly improve with more rep and he isn't an injury risk to everyone within 50 foot radius of him. FWIW - I expect the Sox to play Eloy in LF most of the time in 22. I just think its a really, really, really (did I say really?) bad decision.

We've been over this many times. Andrew Vaughn's splits as a rookie who had never played above A ball are borderline meaningless to me, and the vast majority of anyone who paid attention to the Sox last year feel the same. Except you. You want to send him to AAA and groom him to become a weakside platoon DH.

That too, really. But he's especially anti-Andrew Vaughn. For some reason. Seems personal, haven't quite figured it out.

Don't bother discussing Andrew Vaughn with two gun pete.

Eloy is a hitter. He'll figure it out. I don't doubt that he prefers to play LF. But frankly, IMO, he's removed the ability to make that choice by continually hurting himself while playing horrible defense. He has zero redeeming qualities in LF. Its not some foreign concept that most guys who have always played the field don't enjoy DHing. But tough fucking luck. Eloy has negative value when he's on the IL. He's only valuable when he is in the lineup. DHing him gives him a far better chance to stay in the lineup.

Did I miss something? DOH! DH rule...gonna take a bit for that to become commonplace in my head. All the more reason to park his ass as the primary DH.

Perhaps. I fully expect him to play some LF. Just hope they don't run him out there everyday. I certainly wouldn't. I get the angle of keeping him somewhat fresh out there for interleague games and to keep his spirits up. But yeah, he needs to DH. He does no good for anybody, himself included, if he's on the IL.

Shrug. I guess all this talk about catering to the causal fan or people who aren't interested in baseball is kind of dumb, IMO. I get the idea of wanting to get more people interested in the game. But people who hate baseball or find it boring aren't suddenly going to change to their tune due to some minor rule changes or expanded playoffs.

Chuck's 7 game proposal is better than that IMO. Any scenario where a division winner is playing an around .500 team in a 1-3 game win or go home series is awful, IMO.
-
The MLB lockout is lifted!
For sure - was moreso talking about adding games from the expanded teams. But yes, making the DS a 7 game series is a no brainer. I've always hated it as a 5 game series. As far as 14 team proposals go, this is by far the best I've heard.

I definitely agree that this is a palatable 14 team format (as someone that staunchly opposes further playoff expansion). As long as the division winners aren't getting fucked which totally cheapens the regular season, I can live with it. Problem is - does this really move the needle much at all from the current format for the owners? This is literally adding just 1 game per league to the playoff schedule. I don't think that is really what the owners are after with expansion - can't imagine those 2 extra games change the TV revenues all that much.

He's right though. Eloy needs to be the primary DH. Good thing is, we don't have a primary DH and Vaughn is a comparable OF to Eloy and isn't a risk to hurt himself, Luis, Yoan and TA on every play that goes to LF. Vaughn should be the primary LF moving forward. This also assumes the Sox sign a real RF, which I fully expect them to do.

When (or if) the lockout ends, Carlos Rodon should top the Sox list of signings
If they wanted Rodon, he’d have been extended a QO. Ship has sailed.

Right!? Nothing worse than all those off days the first week! I just sit and twiddle my thumbs and wish like hell I had Sox baseball to watch.
