Why would the mariners trade one of their legit SPs if they’re trying to compete?

Then again, Cease is the one legit chip the Sox have. They aren’t trading Robert for at least 2 years. I am not blinking in January 2024 if I’m Getz. Teams will grow more desperate as the winter drags on.

I don’t claim to be an expert on the BoSox prospects, but Rafaela would be a very underwhelming main piece for Cease based on scouting reports I’ve read. Diminutive glove first RHH. The glove does sound awfully nice, and I would not be opposed to acquiring him as the 2nd piece, but I am not trading Cease to BoSox without them dipping into their top two prospects.

Getz wasn’t the GM in July.

ATL wasted so much money acquiring Kelenic they had to give up Grissom to prorate the Sale deal.

Pretty tough to call any deal at $15M AAV an “albatross” in today’s game.

Yeah, but none of Maldonado, Hill or Flexen fit that description. Theyre just old and bad players that are what they are. Even if they have great first halfs, these guys aren’t returning anything more than backend 40 man / AAAA fluff best case scenario.

I do not believe that is the case. From MLbTR: Flexen returned to free agency at season’s end despite having less than six years of MLB service. That’s common for players who sign a major league deal after a stint in a foreign pro league, as he did during the 2020-21 offseason after one year in the Korea Baseball Organization. Flexen will be a free agent again next winter despite still not reaching the six-year threshold.

The White Sox could easily sign viable free agents. They’d just have to offer more $ than anyone else - just like 95%+ of all free agents. Players go where they get the most money the vast majority of the time.

Feels like this could have / should have been an milb deal. Not a huge sum of $ by any means, but hard to see the vision.

Why?

Colas should be the starting RF for much of the season. There is absolutely no good reason to not try to let him figure it out.

$8-10M isn't a large sum of money in today's game. But again, understand your doubt. I think they'll eventually acquire their RF via the Cease deal. But if not, they have to sign someone. You can't pound the table all offseason about defense and then stick Gavin Sheets in RF.

They just spent just under $6MM on a shitty catcher and a terrible reliever, so I don't think its beyond the realm of possibility they will sign an actual major leaguer to play RF. JR can certainly afford it. Understand the doubt, tho.

Cowser/Kjerstad + Ortiz + Povich/Beavers should be the minimum price the Sox are willing to accept. Or the O's can enjoy wasting the cheap control of their core just like the Sox did!

They should give Adam Duvall 1/$8-10M. He can cover all OF positions, and is an ideal platoon partner for both Beni and Colas. I still think the Sox need to give Colas a lot of the RF reps in 2024. Its a lost season. I am fine with making him earn in AAA for a month or so, but he's the best hope at an internal RF in the org. Yes, his rookie campaign was dreadful but he's a year removed from being the exact type of guy we'd want back in a Cease deal.
