I realize he is quite old, but he doesnt appear to have lost any effectiveness since joining the mlb. Does anyone else feel like this could be a smart under the radar signing? A lot of teams will be focusing on Miller and Robertson which will make them pretty expensive, he might be able to be had for cheap if you can beat Boston out for him.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 7, 2014 -> 03:17 PM) That's now how it works anymore -- the Tigers are going to get a sandwich pick, regardless. The only place the protected pick matters is with the team that loses it. Teams don't "give" their picks anymore, they just disappear. Ya I thought about that after my post, forgot about that change -

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 7, 2014 -> 02:59 PM) As I've mentioned previously, signing one QO free agent decreases the opportunity cost required to sign the next one. Say Melky Cabrera, Victor Martinez, and David Robertson all receive QOs. Signing just one of them requires you give up a 2nd round pick, which is a lot to give up. But if you sign all 3, you can logically say the Sox are only giving up a 3rd round pick for Cabrera/Martinez and a 4th round pick for Robertson. Suddenly, the cost/benefit is technically worth doing so, and the Sox potentially have a team that can win the division next year. This is an excellent point and would also be interesting in terms of order with which they sign people. Is the signing of say Victor Martinez even more valuable if you give the Tigers a 4th round pick instead of a potential 1st, 2nd, or 3rd? I would definitely think so. -

QUOTE (oneofthemikes @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 11:19 AM) Someone the other day mentioned Carlos Gonzalez. I feel like it's too much to hope for, but it'd be nice. I'd be pumped for that -

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Oct 2, 2014 -> 11:36 AM) Very understandable. Hes youngish and definitely available though so I put him. What are everyone's thoughts on a staff like this....... 1. Chris Sale 2. Jose Quintana 3. RHP #3 type (Masterson, McCarthy, Volquez, etc) 4. Hector Noesi 5. Chris Bassitt 6. Carlos Rodon (Most likely by June) Bullpen RHP Soria RHP Putnam RHP Guerra RHP Petricka LHP Duke LHP Snodgress Is John Danks just disappearing? -
Ian Happ sounds like the best college bat available and there is some talk of moving him to the outfield, I'll be interested to see if they bite on him. I think he'll be there.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Sep 30, 2014 -> 02:23 PM) Away from last year, this is true and it alleviates the pain from the reality that we really have s***ty fans. I hope it's me and the usual other ~20,000 when the Sox are fighting for the pennant in these coming Septembers. I went by myself to saturday nights game and found myself enjoying the game much more when it's just the Sox die hards there and the stadium is half empty. -
Russell, Maeda, and some bullpen help please. Robertson maybe?

I dont think either particularly separated themselves from the other, but I think Semien had a slightly better season. While Sanchez's defense definitely looked legit, he provided almost no value with his bat.

Hahn a C? No, I'd give him a B/B+. In one offseason, he brought in the teams 2 best pitchers and had another excellent draft class. If anything, Hahn has really turned this franchise around on a dime. I thought this teams outlook was going to be abysmal for awhile when he took over....today, I can confidently say I believe they are a playoff contender next season. 2 or 3 smart offseason moves and they are right in it.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 28, 2014 -> 05:02 PM) That's great! I can't remember a time when we recently had that draft spot and wound up with a complete bust. Oh. Because Gordon Beckham obviously means this pick will be a disaster -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 25, 2014 -> 08:27 PM) Sierra almost killed himself hitting 1B with the wrong foot. That dude is so far behind the baseball IQ curve it isn't even funny. Hopefully he catches up, because he has some talent, and seems to be a guy that everyone loves. I really don't see him staying next season. In terms of 4th OFers/late inning defensive replacements, I'd rather have Danks in there.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Sep 23, 2014 -> 11:01 PM) We avoided another close call tonight. If the Padres win, we will be 3.5 games ahead of a protected pick. If they don't win, we will 3 games ahead of a protected pick. The Cubs and Phillies are the only realistic teams we could pass in these last 5 games. 2.5 GB of the Cubs for the 8th pick, 1 GB of the Phillies for the 9th pick. So with the loss tonight and subsequent wins by the Cubs and Philly, do we move up to the 9th pick in front of Philly? What's the tiebreaker, inter league record? -
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Sep 15, 2014 -> 05:51 PM) http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2014/9/15...l-cy-young-2014 It's stuff like this and Abreu being a shoe-in for ROY that make me think the White Sox need a huge offseason to capitalize on these guys and these seasons

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 10, 2014 -> 09:05 AM) Matt Kemp is a better answer...although we're not going to get away with a Danks dump probably. They would undoubtedly want Alexei, maybe Gillaspie depending on Uribe's situation at 3B and Hanley Ramirez...I haven't followed their two Cuban middle infielders, but they have a lot invested in them as well. They also need more production out of catcher, AJ Ellis has been bad after being very productive last year. So the conversation's centering around Alexei, Conor, Flowers and Johnson/Semien/Sanchez, whoever they like the most...with the preference being the three players I listed first. Lolwut? In what world are we trading that package for Matt Kemp?
-
Really thinking our offseason is going to be a trade, a LF in FA (Melky), and a bullpen piece or two
-
As of today, they have the same WAR despite having two very different seasons. Does this suggest that we have been underrating Flowers this season or overrating the season Gillaspie has had?

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 4, 2014 -> 08:33 AM) I was thinking of this last night - I'm not sure how much it will matter if the Sox have a protected pick or not. They will likely be semi-active in free agency, but as we saw last year, if there's a marginal talent that will cost the Sox even a 2nd round pick, they are not likely to pursue that option, and there is no one attractive enough in free agency this year for the Sox to concede either a 1st or a 2nd. Victor Martinez is the one that comes immediately to mind, but I think the Sox would be absolutely insane to give up even a 2nd round pick to the Tigers to sign a 36 year old player. If he's not offered a QO - which, why wouldn't he? - then I can see the Sox interested, but even that'd be a really short term deal. Given Hahn's signings in the past, with a tendency towards guys who produce ground balls, I also can't see them being interested in James Shields either. Basically, getting a higher pick isn't a bad thing, but they're already going to end up with a good pick, so the best thing to do is hope the young players hit well and keep developing, win or lose. (not trying to thread-jack or say this thread is stupid, as the work put into it is appreciated) Guys like Martin and Tomas will not cost picks (I dont imagine the Pirates will extend Martin a QO) -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 3, 2014 -> 10:45 PM) Certainly the most entertaining/exciting right now. You've got Hendricks and Wada, Arrieta showing ace stuff, Rondon, then the three new dynamic players in Alcantara, Baez and Soler. On the other hand, Rizzo and Castro are out, but they've been playing much better baseball overall the last 2-3 weeks. We've basically got Sale/Abreu, Eaton and Avisail...and those who get excited about Semien/Sanchez at-bats. And watching Alexei play defense. There's this guy named Jose Quintana, he's pretty good, check him out
