Steve Stone with a dose of reality for Sox fans
Lip Man 1 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
And what were the results from this organization when they were "trying to win?" Not very good was it. Same people calling the shots just different approaches. As I said I can understand why fans are concerned/upset. -
Apparently they (and the umpires) didn't know the rules (and that doesn't speak well for those umps does it?): https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/rays-savvy-lineup-switch-confuses-red-sox-manager-alex-cora-and-umpires-causes-19-minute-delay/ By the way the White Sox pulled this maneuver in the past as well: May 15, 1951 – It was a testament to the managerial genius of Sox skipper Paul Richards. It had been 30 years since the league saw a move like this. In the ninth inning of a game in Boston where the White Sox were winning 7-6, relief pitcher Harry Dorish was removed in favor of Billy Pierce to face the left handed hitting Ted Williams, only Dorish wasn’t removed from the game! He was moved to third base. Pierce retired Williams on a pop up, then was taken out of the game and Dorish put back on the mound. Boston eventually tied the game but the White Sox would have the last laugh, winning 9-7 in 11 innings. The victory marked the start of a 14 game win streak, with 11 of the wins on the road. On May 30 after sweeping the St. Louis Browns, the Sox record stood at 26-9.

Steve Stone with a dose of reality for Sox fans

Exactly. It is NOT just this year or the past three years, it is the awful free agent signings, the bad trades, the poor draft picks, the injury situation and remember even when the Sox were "trying to win" they found ways to screw it all up. This franchise has been one of the worst in baseball since 2007 that's going on 13 years now when this season ends...man that's a long time to be a joke isn't it? (Save for the three winning seasons which weren't even in consecutive seasons...) And personally I think after all that,Sox ownership / front office should thank God there are still fans around who still care about the daily happenings instead of just saying, "the hell with you, a pox on your house..." At least Sox fans don't appear to be apathetic (yet...) -

Perhaps because the majority of fans now no longer trust ownership and the front office to get it done after the Machado fiasco? They actually see improvement and realize with JR, Kenny and Hahn pulling the strings there is a decent chance they screw it up and it gets flushed right down the toilet. That worries them. I suspect like with myself, they supported the rebuild, it was needed, it was the only possible way out but the ownership was asking the same people who jazzed it all up to fix it. Now throw in last off season and reality is beginning to hit home and it worries them. Just a possible reason. -

Trust me Stone could retire tomorrow and not have to worry about money for the rest of his life. The guy owns restaurants and has for decades. Money is the LEAST of his worries. He does this because he enjoys it, it's not like he needs to work. -

Stone continues to "troll" (for wont of a better word) Sox fans. An hour ago he posted all the bad teams who won games last night against good teams and said it happens all the time. Baseball 101. I asked him how many of those bad teams had as bad a pitcher as Dylan Covey working for them? LOL. Honestly I don't know what's gotten into this guy lately, losing respect for him myself... if he can't understand why Sox fans are pissed off and have a short fuse after all the shitty baseball they've seen since 2007 maybe he's not as smart as I thought he was. It's not that hard to comprehend is it? -
White Sox (Covey) vs Marlins (Smith) 7:10 CT

Again what does that say about the organization in year three of the rebuild and not every single pitcher in the minor league organization has had TJ surgery (although it does seem like it...) -

Well I remember reading Shark had issues with him because he wanted him to pitch a certain way when he was here. -

My only comment is to ask why Covey remains in the rotation. He is flat out brutal, now something like 6-27 in his "career." The White Sox answer to Anthony Young who lost if I remember right his first 20 major league decisions. If you answer, "well who else do the Sox have?" what does THAT say about the organization three years into the rebuild. Not one or two years. -
Which is why today, the way pitchers drop like flies you better have not five, SIX guys you can count on. The top five start the season in the rotation, the #6 guy is your long man / mop up / spot starter when the DH's pile up. AND I'd personally have a 7th guy standing by in Charlotte if everything went to hell...either my top prospect or a vet happy to still be getting a good paycheck.

Some truth to this. -
On a scale of 1-10 I say a three...these are the White Sox.
-
I think how he is handled depends on if the Sox can get starting pitching help over the winter. Things will be in a state of flux until then in my opinion. If they get help they can handle him with kid gloves, if not they have to pitch him (unless for example fans enjoy seeing the likes of Dylan Covey on the mound)

That game put the Sox into first place in the division...then they went to Detroit and started Colon and Contreras in a DH if I remember right. It was all downhill from there. That was some game and some catch by Wise who had his one moment in the sun.

Jay Mariotti Junior.

Not calling you out Tony because I agree but I keep seeing posts from some folks talking about his "lack" of power. My personal opinion is that if a guy hits .300 with some doubles, triples and get 175 hits or so a season AND plays his position well, I don't care if he "only" hits eight home runs. Sure the Sox need some power guys but after the past several seasons three or four 300 hitters in the lineup would be a very refreshing change.

Excellent post and summery. One correction of a historical nature, Fisk became a free agent because Boston and GM Haywood Sullivan did not send him a contract offer for the 1981 season within the required time.

Home Sweet Home: White Sox vs Marlins 7:10 CT (Nova vs Richards)
Lip Man 1 replied to Richie's topic in 2019 Season in Review
Nice outing by Nova against an awful club. Maybe they can trade him now (LOL) and get something for him? ? -
I could go with Dick or Billy Pierce, Minnie Minoso and then Tommy John and Jim Katt.

Know Donn and have spoken with him many times just a class guy, very good interview too. -
When you have to go back to the Albert Belle signing to show the Sox were willing to spend top dollar to get top talent that's all you need to know about next off season. Probably not happening...hope it does, but I'm not holding my breath. The can CAN and SHOULD get five or six solid free agents though who can fill holes, provide leadership and actually produce...at least on paper...strange things happen when free agents put on that Sox uniform as history shows they fall off the cliff. One thing is for sure if the Sox with a young team on the rise and plenty of payroll space don't make significant improvements I think the fan base will basically say they'll never trust this front office again (i.e. fool me once, shame on you...fool me twice, shame on me)
