QUOTE (glangon @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 08:16 AM) 5 games off the Wildcard spot is the positive thing to look at and I wonder if this is why we haven't seen any movement on the trade front. Our schedule over the next couple of weeks isn't too bad. We have 6 more games against the Twins (3 at the Cell, 3 on the Road), 3 Home games against the Tigers and 3 Road games in Detroit. If we can get a decent enough record in the next 2 weeks then who knows, as unlikely as it seems, we could challenge for that 2nd Wild Card spot. The Glass may be half-full and it's certainly tasting better than it tasted last year. The Red Sox and White Sox were tied going intoyeaterday w 54 losses. Somone is New England ran a mathematical probablility of the Red Sox making the wildcard based on estimated performanace of the other teams in front of them. the odds were 6% of making 2nd wildcard. As I posted the other day, last year I saw a "numbesr person" person figure that you add 1.5 games for every team in front of you in addition to the games back. So the White Sox are about 12 games back.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 24, 2014 -> 03:47 PM) Most of the time I think we cam also eliminate Boston as a destination for Viciedo. They just lost 3 straight to Jays so I doubt they will trade for an outfielder now.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 11:16 PM) 5 blown saves, 1.99 HR/9, 3.98 era. He is gasoline, we all saw that last season, there is enough of that in the current bullpen There is someone w 24 saves in the current bullpen???? I don't think the Sox have 24 saves total in the bullpen.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 07:13 PM) These Rodon will be our immediate #2 comments are just ridiculous. Sale didn't come in and be our instant #1. It ultimately happened but that isn't where he was penciled in and those sort of results are extremely rare. The expectations around here for Rodon are just ridiculous. Seen way too many, he'll be a #2 next year comments. That would be awesome but I certainly wouldn't expect that. I said 2016

Q is really pitching well this year. Imagine if he gets pushed back to a #3 when Rodon arrives. I thnk we have a shot to have a great rotation in 2016. Now hopefully we find a closer by then as well.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 10:57 AM) This is important. Guys in the AZL are generally young and raw players with it also being a place for players to rehab. This means they likely haven't developed the instincts or skills to quickly get to balls in the hole or necessarily make accurate throws. This is why K's, BB's, and velocity are much more important, especially in the low minors. I agree I think. Are you saying the AZL is really practice ----the good news is Rodon was surrounded by guys who are lousy fielders but the bad news he gave up hits to guys who are lousy hitters......................................................

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 01:59 PM) I feel like Jonny Gomes would make Tank redundant in Boston. 10 years younger.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 12:25 PM) Chris Cotillo @ChrisCotillo 8m The two #WhiteSox drawing the most interest: John Danks and Dayan Viciedo, according to sources. Possibly good news is the Red Sox are playing really well and their GM said they are still in it. That may make them buyers instead of sellers( although Peavy will probably still go). They still need an outfielder and Viciedo may be suited to Fenway.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 20, 2014 -> 02:55 PM) Semien is the classic "gets a cup of coffee in MLB and now everybody thinks he sucks" guy. Marcus has accomplished far more than Micah at this point and the only tool where Micah beats him is speed. Marcus, at present, is clearly a better bet on defense, for power, for plate discipline, and hit tool in general. It isn't so far apart that Micah can't pass him up, but that's how it is. Why would Marcus be better defensively??? He has been a very average defensive player in AAA ( as well as during his time in ML) whereas Micah has been better in his brief stint so far at AAA

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 20, 2014 -> 11:53 AM) I can't wait until I never have to see Beckham's name in the lineup card again. I think you will have to wait until next year. His downward spiral will probably mean the Sox will wait till the offseason.

QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 09:47 PM) But who cares about this year? Do you really think Conor Gillaspie is ever going to be a starting 3B on a team with World Series aspirations? Personally I don't. If you get value for him you absolutely trade him. Whether or not we get value is arguable, but its certainly possible given the lack of corner infielders on the market. I would say there is a lack of quality 3b in the ML at this point. Many get moved to first. If Gillaspie is a .300 hitter he is absolutely a starting 3B on a World Series team. Boston won the World Series last year and they benched their regular season 3B for a rookie in the WS. If Gillaspie is a .250 hitter then you need to upgrade. Quality hitters, .300 + are also somewhat limited so if you find one there is a place for them. But if you have a 3B without power you need to find it elsewhere. Now Abreu certainly helps offset some of that lack of power with his above average numbers.

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 04:06 PM) Saying Davidson has 10-15 HR potential is laughable. He clearly has 20+ potential, possibly even 30. K rates are based on K/PA not ABs. At the AAA level, his K rate is roughly 28%. That is not good, but it's not going to lead the league or anything either. His BB rate is fine. At the AAA level it is roughly 9%. That would be higher than anybody on the Sox current roster not named Adam Dunn. I honestly think part of Davidson's problem this year is that the disappointment of not making the roster has caused his issues. I really felt like he was ready to be the opening day starter.\ Wait a minute. You are taking his 25 home runs ( projected ) at AAA and assuming he will hit the same in the majors. I doubt that. Now if he strikes out at a 30% clip at AAA and hits .220 how does that project against ML pitching. Again Tyler Flowers had better numbers in average and RBI's in AAA, also in Charlotte, and it didn't project well. Take a look at Jordan Danks numbers in AAA. He will hit 20 HR in Charlotte this year so you would project him to hit that many in the majors??? Regarding walks. Tyler Flowers in AAA-13.5%. This year in ML 6%. Again Davidson is only 23 but he is still not hitting his weight in AAA.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 16, 2014 -> 02:47 PM) He's not supposed to be good but with a guy that young there's always going to be some potential for improvement. Davidson will need at least another year in AAA. Offensively he is another Tyler Flowers. He will probably hit 10-15 HR but he strikes out better than 1 out of every 3 ABs and he does not draw many walks. He is a mediocre defender probably similiar to Gillaspie. Davidson is still 23 so maybe by 2016 he figures it out.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 12:31 PM) Alexei is hitting .282, 15 doubles, 2 triples, 8 HRs, 41 RBIs, 15 SBs, slugging 400 and an OPS of 718. Of course he was going to hit some sort of slump because he was not going to maintain the 330-350 average that he was hitting before. Those are still great numbers for a SS who is on a great contract and has a solid career. You can definitely net a great deal. You can only net a great deal if a team feels they need a SS to make the playoffs. The Red Sox won a WS w JD Drew and they signed him again so they can deal him at the trading deadline. He would bring a mediocre return but some team may do that as opposed to offering a great deal for Alexei. There may be other trade possibilties for SS as well.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 11:38 AM) Love that story. Pitcher acts like child. AJ ignores it. AJs fault somehow. Author nailed it. The Red Sox are being babies...again There was a story in Boston media this week about Peavy. He said he would hate to leave Boston. He said in his 1 season with them he has made friends for his lifetime. Both he and AJ are having bad years and both will probably be gone by the end of the month. But where Peavy "fit in" it looks like AJ didn't. AJ had some weird media comments about a month ago how he was responsible for losing a game which seemd odd at the time. Obviously there was some dissension in the clubhouse.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 06:11 PM) I can't recall the last time the Sox played the same catcher in all 4 games of a series. You would think Tyler Flowers was the greatest catcher ever to get as much playing time as he has. Oh well, Quintana has to get over his 6th inning, 3rd time through the order scuffles to become a star. Ross and Drew were both hitting their weight coming in. You walk .150 hitters back to back, regardless of not getting fringe pitches and you deserve the outcome. Q is 25 and he will get better.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 12:33 PM) Flowers just to get off the roster in my opinion lol. Noesi could net 2 low A pitchers I believe. He has pitched well with the Sox. That would be dumb. You can't dump flowers until you have a better option. Flowers last year in AAA at Charlotte he hit .260. This year at Charlotte Phegley is hitting .250. What they can do is give Nieto more games but obviously the staff feels Flowers handles the pitchers better or they already would have done that. Papelbon is a great closer but makes Adam Dunn type money. Are you sure you want to pay him $13 Mil??? Reed was making $550,000

So do we trade Viciedo for De La Rosa and Nava. That was last week's deal and now Hahn saw both first hand tonight.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 10:29 PM) It's 78 degrees Maybe in Chicago. It was 86 degrees in Boston when the game started.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 10:17 PM) Funny there was only one post disagreeing with yanking Sale before the bullpen failed. Then the experts came out. Last time Sale faced Boston, Robin left Sale in too long and he ended up on DL. This time everyone complains he pulled him too early. But he was over his average number of pitches for the season so I have no problem w pulling him. Sale's arm is more important than a single game. As far as choices in the BP, they all are mediocre. We traded our closer and went into the season hoping to find one. They still haven't so there will be more late game collapses. On the positive side, Gillaspie and Abreu are having great series. Now the Sox have to beat Lester to take the series. Should be a good match up w Q.

Red Sox cut AJ loose today. Peavy looks like he will be traded to St Louis.

When Does Flowers Get Replaced As Everyday Catcher?
SCCWS replied to Feeky Magee's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (sammy esposito @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 12:05 PM) Lately he appears to be swinging the bat anywhere that the ball isn't. The damn thing keeps moving on him. In fairness, he made a great play last night on the roller w bases loaded. Since the pitching staff is really on a roll lately, I doubt Robin will want any changes at catcher. -
I think the home plate ump was perfect for Carroll. He called the low strike all night long and Carroll did a great job of hitting the bottom of the strike zone. Now if the ump last night was not vcalling low strikes, the outcome may have been very different. That is the fine line for a pitcher who has to nibble.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 5, 2014 -> 08:27 AM) The reality of the situation for us is if we trade Viciedo now, we enter next offseason with holes at LF & DH and a huge lack of power in our lineup. Given some of our other needs, primary C & SP, that's a pretty large to-do-list for just one offseason and with no solid internal options to fill them. What's it going to cost us in terms of cash and prospects to fill all these holes from the outside? Will there be other options even available? People can hate all they want on Viciedo and be eager to move him, but when Jordan Danks is the next best option we have in-house, things can get a lot uglier. Having said this, I'm sure the stats-oriented posters will say Danks' superior defense and base-running would make him a more valuable player, which I would find laughable. At some point, certain posters have to accept the fact that baseball is not context-neutral and teams with the highest WARs aren't awarded automatic playoff spots. A team playing 81 games at the Cell with Conor at 3B, Garcia in RF, & Danks in LF (or someone like him) isn't going to do well offensively over the course of a season. It's critical to have some balance in your lineup and having those three guys at power-based positions would be a disaster IMO. Wait. That is not the reality of the situation. You are not going to trade Viciedo for cash. The object of trading him is get a a player(s) back who fill a hole. So if you trade him and get another outfielder, a SP or C in return, you are not worse off. You only trade him if you get something of equal value back. The Boston article yesterday mentioned one of their 3 young right handed starting picthers in AAA/ML and a prospect. That might fill the 4th SP spot and maybe you get lucky w a prospect. You don't trade Viciedo unless it fills an existing need or unless you get what you perceive to be a better OF option.
