White Sox have shown interest in Machado
Bob Sacamano replied to peppers312's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 11:06 AM) Really, the Dodgers, with Turner at 3b and Seager at SS, are going to be after him? Seriously, where would he play? Hypothetically they could move Seager to 2B. Really would not put that past the Dodgers. -

I like discussing this as we have nothing else to talk about right now but holy hell please make a decision already, O's. We're all just repeating ourselves. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 10:50 AM) Sure if the Sox want to pay top dollar. Stanton to the Yanks was bad for the WSox as it made Machado more likely for them instead of Harper. We're talking about if the Sox matched the top offer (or even went over) and then tried to sell him on other reasons (culture). You're arguing he wouldn't accept due to a s*** record and awful bullpen yet if he is a free agent and had no experience here, he suddenly wouldn't see that? -

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 10:44 AM) There's not a single reliable pitcher on this roster right now. Could possibly have the most unstable starting/relief group in the majors at this moment. But don't worry, I'm sure Manny will love the culture on a team that blows leads late due to its minor league bullpen Well then for all the hopeful people who automatically write him into their 2019 dream lineup, I guess they have no hope either then. -

QUOTE (yesterday333 @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 10:41 AM) To me this is saying we will be willing to at least match anything somebody else is willing to give. Yeah and then hope his year here puts them over the top. -

Maybe the White Sox do fully intend to top or at the very least match any offer he receives? If he has the same offer in hand, he could choose to stay with his teammates and friends he makes here for a year. Remember that payroll will be low for a while. Also remember, we're talking about the same team that would NEVER rebuild or NEVER spend $60 million on a teenager. -

QUOTE (Sockin @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 09:40 AM) I think he ends up with the Cardinals if he's traded at all. If they are in on him they have no reason not to try to top our offer. There's too much chatter with us to end up with him IMO. Same. They've been linked to Donaldson for months it seems. Might as well pay a little extra and get the better, healthier player. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 09:16 AM) Anyone in a weird in-between where they don't want this deal to happen but also love baseball trades and so you find yourself rooting for a trade even though you dread it? Anyway. Can the cards just please take this to the finish line? Yeah this is how I feel lol if it ends up being a lot more reasonable than we expect, I'll be fine. -
QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 09:25 AM) https://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/941689422109659136 Dang. Pretty sure we are only going to go after the bullpen scraps left in january. It was reported the other day that teams still in contention were after him. Figured we had no chance if that were the case and apparently it was.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 09:01 AM) This was a 95 loss team that has added Wellington Castillo. Fulmer won't be as good as he was his last 3 starts. Pretty good odds Giolitto won't be as good as his starts, considering his ERA in AAA was about 2 runs higher. They still suck. Many growing pains are still in store. Yeah everyone seems to think these guys are going to come up and hit and pitch great right away. -

QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 09:03 AM) Cease is a guy I would hesitate to toss away in a trade. He has dealt with injuries and needs to build up his innings, but his stuff is legitimate mlb quality. He's a player I could see us regretting dealing too soon and could be primed for a breakout with his plus plus fastball and plus power curveball. If he can't handle starting he certainly has the stuff to be a setup man or closer. Dunning is a guy who profiles as a solid #4 starter in the majors who can eat a ton of innings for you. That is still a valuable player. I actually didn't mean to put Cease there. I meant it as just Dunning. -

QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 08:53 AM) I doubt teams are trading their top guys for a one year rental though, especially the White Sox. It would be criminal to give up a player like Kopech in a deal for one season of Machado with the cost of starting pitching. Anything better than a Cease/Dunning level prospect would be a mistake in my opinion, and I do not love the idea of dealing either of those players as well. I get the "extended sales pitch" idea, but what is that worth in terms of our prospects? I think I could stomach something like one of Cease/Dunning and one of Guerrero/Stephens and like a low-level prospect. -

A part of me thinks that the Yankees have the best offer on the table for Machado but the Orioles don't want to trade him to the Yankees. It was reported the Cardinals didn't want to trade 2 of their arms to grab him. Is it entirely possible Hahn sent a low-ball offer (not including Giolito, Kopech, Lopez, Hansen, Cease nor top position players) to the Orioles for Machado and it's actually being considered? Remember that their GM isn't really the smartest. Could also explain why Hahn was surprised that their offer was reported as the best. -

QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 11:03 PM) Hard for me to agree with that I think both the rotation and lineup will be improved quite a bit from last year Bullpen is pretty gross Hoping CWS just brings in some fliers and let the kids play and calls it an offseason Focus on bringing in MM next year and maybe Cody Allen and another reliever or two That bullpen is going to blow a lot of games. -

f*** Angelos. I understand and can guarantee Sox have no intention on flipping him to Yankees. But we should be able to deal him to whatever team we want past a certain point without it being "unethical". Say its July 15th, the Sox can say they traded for him with every intention of working on an extension (which could be true) and they couldn't come together on an agreement. And then the Sox make him available. If the Yankees have the best offer on the table, I'm taking it. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 06:01 PM) And that deal wound up costing us 1 quality starting IF and everyone insisted we'd be able to trade him at the deadline and then we couldn't get anything of use back for him after his terrible July and then everyone loved the draft pick and it wound up being a guy down for TJS. This is what we call learning from history. That's actually not true. Hahn already said he wanted to rebuild but they decided to make a push for the playoffs. -

Watch this end up being a situation like the Samardzija deal where people were freaking out we dealt Anderson and it turned out to be more about quantity than quality. Watch a deal somehow center around Stephens and Adams while everyone else is intact. -

They must really like the Yankees package if they're that afraid to trade him to a rebulding tean lol -

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 05:53 PM) If it would be pointless, then why not grant the window to increase their return? Because it's Baltimore, a team that just said they don't believe in international spending. -

QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 05:45 PM) Machado for Avi and/or Cease + org filler + promise we won't trade him to Yankees? Won't trade him to Yankees before a certain date? Sure. I agree it would be s***ty if done immediately but there should be no issues if done at a later point. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 05:43 PM) Because they play them 18 or 19 times. It is very understandable. If the White Sox word isn't good enough, then it won't happen. Probably won't happen anyway. There has to be at least one top guy in the package or it makes no sense for Baltimore. So if he goes to the Sox, there should be no issue in dealing him there later on in the summer. You can justify it as "we traded for him and fully intended on extending him. Negotiations are far apart so we are making him available" in July completely avoiding the 18-19 games. -

Why do the O's care if he ends up there for one season, a season in which O's will be bad if they trade him? -

QUOTE (wrathofhahn @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 05:37 PM) The downside is it locks you into a roster that isnt good enough and prevents you from dealing either Abreu or Garcia possibly both. There is also the non-zero chance Machado gets injured or has another down year. There is risk plenty. Of course there is upside too but all this is predicated on the Orioles accepting a bad offer. Why woudn't they keep him. Why wouldn't they see where they are at the deadline and either move him for prospects or take the pick? They are already locked in. Other then Britton not much else on their roster has significant value. Why?
