Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
Bob Sacamano replied to GGajewski18's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I bet a lot of moves happen (not just our team but around the MLB in general) in the next 8-9 days before the holidays. -
Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go

QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Dec 15, 2016 -> 09:15 AM) Most baseball analysts seem to think that the White Sox fleeced the Nationals for Eaton. That is not necessarily the case for a variety of reasons. First, Eaton is very underrated as a defensive player, as a lead-off man, a base runner, and as a clutch hitter with power. He really started to flourish as a defensive player last season. Second, the Nationals are unlikely to sign Bryce Harper when he hits free agency, so they are now insured that RF will be manned by Eaton . Third, Giolito is not a sure thing as was demonstrated when he came up to the major league level last season. Quintana is likewise one of the more underrated players in baseball. Anyone who has watched the White Sox over the past few years has seen Quintana battle and keep the White Sox in games despite the lack of run support. Quintana is consistent, durable and he is signed for four years in a team friendly contract. The Sox should hold on to Quintana unless they are bowled over with an offer. Wait to trade Quintana until the trade deadline to maximize return. If he's in center field, his defensive value goes down. I don't know if the plan is for him or Harper to play center though. -

QUOTE (Special K @ Dec 15, 2016 -> 09:08 AM) So we can expect another package centered around pitching prospects? I understand the philosophy of stocking up on arms, but at some point we're going to need to go for bats. We can draft bats, but drafting 1 or 2 is not going to improve our depth much (especially when there's a good chance one of those picks busts). Almost seems to be the exact opposite of the Cubs farm philosophy at this point. They stockpiled on positional prospects and then signed pitching (or traded for it). I do want them to make a deal where we take back like 3 bats. -

QUOTE (striker @ Dec 15, 2016 -> 08:51 AM) I disagree. 1. McCutchen makes Meadowns expendable. Even if they traded McCutchen, the return could be used to acquire Quintana without having to trade Meadows. 2. The Pirates have a lot of talent in both the majors and the minors. Adding Quintana would add wins sooner vs. later (with prospects). 3. Quintana is under control for four years. If they kept McCutchen and added Quintana, they could make a run for it the next couple of years and sell McCutchen at the 2018 trade deadline (if they aren't in it) and trade Quintana. That would easily replenish their minors. The risk there is if either player declines. Quintana is exactly what the Pirates need, a 4 years cost controller top of the rotation starter. I don't disagree with any of what you're saying but I would still be a bit shocked to see them make the move. -

QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Dec 15, 2016 -> 08:44 AM) Possible, but hard to see them giving up Reyes honestly. And even then they really don't have a whole lot of position player prospects. Bader, Perez, and Carson Kelly are about all they have and Bader is unspectacular as they come and Perez is very far away. Kelly we should be interested in though. 0 interest in Wong. Maybe if they included Grichuk? Not sure of his service time though, 4 years left of control I believe? They could always make it interesting with their competitive balance pick (but that would have to be like a 5th piece). -

QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Dec 15, 2016 -> 08:25 AM) Who are the other teams though? Serious question. How many playoff contenders need pitching and have a top 25 (or close to it) prospect they are willing to give up? It's gotta be a very short list. Yankees, Rockies...they are the only 2 serious contenders I see. Pirates have a need for pitching and the prospects, but the odds of them trading 3-4 or good prospects for 1 guy seems very low to me. Cards, Indians, Rangers, Red Sox, Giants, Orioles, Mets, Nats, Cubs, Dodgers....all playoff contenders that aren't going to be trading for Q in my eyes. I agree 100%. Doesn't seem like a Pirates thing to do. Unless they unload a couple of the guys at the MLB level for prospects. -
MLB to ban certain hazing per new CBA
Bob Sacamano replied to LittleHurt05's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Deadpool @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 10:46 PM) And completely unnecessary. Apparently MLB doesn't think so if they're only banning a certain thing about it. -
QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 04:07 PM) Amazing he lasted as long as he did. Dude just looks like a barista. Very hipsterish like he should be hanging out by his job by the Chicago River haha working around that area, I see plenty of people like him.

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 03:59 PM) Castillo signs with the O's. 1 year / $6M, with a $7M player option for year 2. Not a bad deal. Even though he's pretty bad defensively, I would have loved that deal. Yeah could have maybe flipped him. Still want Plawecki or trade Robertson for a package including Severino.
-
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 03:58 PM) I'm talking someone like Matt Davidson hitting 190 in July with 15 errors. Obviously proven MLB talent like Jose and Todd I'll be rooting for to maximize their trade value. I mean I'll root for Matt too if he's crushing it but the Sox have quite a few replacement level options to trot out this year that are no longer prospects they are just guys. Actually, is Shuck still on the roster? He'd be a perfect CF. I don't think he is but Shuck in center and Garcia in right would lead to a lot of extra bases for the opponent. Actually, Melky in left would make us a terrible outfield all around in that case haha

QUOTE (Tony @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 03:39 PM) You're too young to remember when these same posts were made about Anderson, Sweeney, Fields...ect. Not saying it won't happen, but just sayin... Haha so true...just gotta keep adding more young bats.
-
QUOTE (Sleepy Harold @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 03:36 PM) Diamondbacks 2 yrs 4M Still blows my mind they couldn't find a taker for Castillo.
-
QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 03:21 PM) You're saying this in a thread about a pitcher the Sox signed today, hah. Holland was the last thing I heard about that I could say publicly. I expect the Sox to continue to add 1 year contracts. I was more referring to trades but yeah I see the irony haha
-
He gets a mill when he reaches 150 innings and another mill when he reaches 200. Best case scenario, we pay him about $4 mil dealing him to a team in July (about 2/3 of the way through the season). Worst case, he's dfa'd at some point and we owe him $6 million.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 03:07 PM) This is sig worthy. Well said, in few words. I want the future guys to do well, the guys they are just trotting out there with no future I hope they suck as much as possible. This is a true throwaway year except development wise. So we can't flip them for anything? Seems like there's a decent chance Frazier and Abreu will both be here and I would say neither really has a future here. Lawrie and Robertson may still even be here.
-
QUOTE (Dunt @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 03:07 PM) Mathis signed last week Oh well then nvm lol who did he sign with?
-
QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 03:01 PM) Tyson Ross and Greg Holland are desired assets. They're going to sign with contending teams because they are going to have multiple options. It's easy to point out the guys the Sox should sign for the rebuild but the most desired "flip" candidates are going to sign with contenders. Watch Ross go to the Cubs and Holland to the Nationals. I do think both of these moves will happen. And rabbit, you have anything for us? We're dying here lol
-
I would like them to try to buy low on Plawecki. He may be odd-man out with d'Arnaud and Rivera behind the plate for the Mets. Or sign Jeff Mathis. I'm just looking at defensive first types to pair with Narvaez behind the plate. Someone who could also work with Collins in Spring Training (if Collins is in big league camp which I kind of doubt).

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 02:48 PM) And even if the post him, he might think twice and realize it would be better to wait. Then you have no July 2nd signees and have scraps left if anything. Too risky for the Sox IMO. Yep. Too risky for a team that should be hording young talent
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 02:43 PM) A poor performance could make it pretty obvious. The entire thing is fascinating. The posting fee is maxed at $20 million. If you want to offer him all your bonus allotment you can't sign anyone on July 2nd, and will have to trade for extra funds. Then you have to make sure his team will post him and he will agree to come over. And the player is probably giving up a ton of money by not waiting, and letting every team have a shot at him. Huge risk he doesn't choose you. Huge reward if he does. Yeah I guess this is a big risk. Watching everyone else sign guys and then Otani doesn't even come over.
-
QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 02:24 PM) Probably could sign back on a minor league deal. Arms are arms. Especially lefty. Random but sort of related (your lefty comment). Did Boone Logan sign yet? We should sign Logan and G. Holland taking them off of the market and then deal Jennings and Robertson.

2016-17 free agency thread (NON WHITE SOX RELATED)
Bob Sacamano replied to southsider2k5's topic in The Diamond Club
Orioles sign Wellington Castillo to 1 year deal with a second year player option. Basically a 2 year deal for $13 million. -
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 02:15 PM) Service time is service time. It doesn't matter if it's a September call up or not. A player hits free agency after 6 full seasons of service time. 1 full season is considered 172 days of service time. The season is roughly 183 days but a player is only allowed to accrue 172 service days per season. Moncada, Lopez and Giolito clocks have all essentially started but you don't accrue service time if you are in the minors. Current service time- Moncada - 31 days Giolito - 39 days Lopez - 44 days Baseball reference lists all 3 as being free agency eligible after 2022 but that is going on the assumption that since they have already been in the Majors that they will be in the Majors at the start of the year. For the Sox to change that free agency date until after the 2023 season they would need to wait until it was late enough in the year that none of them have accrued a total of 172 service days before the end of this season. Date on which they can be called up to give the Sox a "7th year" and move the free agency date until after 2023- Moncada - May 14 Giolito - May 22 Lopez - May 27 I think all 3 will be called up shortly after those dates hit so long as they are playing well and the Sox feel they are ready. No point in letting them stay down in the minors dominating when they could get valuable Major League experience. This post is beautiful and one that should be pinned to the top.
