They were still somewhat competitive in the five seasons following 2005 though. If 2006-2011 had been more like 2013-2018 then those attendance numbers probably look a lot different.

Agree to disagree. It didn’t take long for the extra fan interest that 2005 generated to disappear and that was with a playoff appearance 3 years later and it being the first World Series title in Chicago in nearly a century. Another title wouldn’t have the impact 2005 did and if the team immediately started losing 90+ games again afterwards any gained interest would diminish even more rapidly IMO.

That’s not what I’m arguing. Hypothetical scenario A: The White Sox get a bunch of fluky career years out of otherwise mediocre players and win a title, but for the following 5 seasons the team averages 68 wins a season and don’t sniff the playoffs. Talent evaluation is still highly questionable. Hypothetical scenario B: The White Sox average 95 wins over a six year stretch with 5 playoff appearances and two pennants but zero titles. Even if the window of contention is now closing in scenario B which do you feel better about going forward and which one does more to generate fan interest?

Because to me competitive seasons are infinitely more interesting as a fan than non competitive seasons are and I think 6 interesting seasons is better entertainment value than 1 amazing season and 5 seasons of suck. And if this front office can prove they can actually build a consistent competitor then that’s better for the future of this franchise than if they just luck into a title again. #1 means I’m more confident in more titles happening in the future than if #2 happened.

Agree with this. We’ve already seen the “win a title and then suck” story play out, but we’ve never seen this franchise be consistently competitive for a stretch, I’m leaning #1.

Dodgers & Reds trade (Kemp, Puig, & Wood to CIN, Bailey, Josiah Gray & Jeter Downs to LA)
Kershaw is declining though. With his drop in velocity and loss of effectiveness of his slider I’d honestly bet the days of sub 3 ERA Kershaw are gone.

Machado: Update - Manny, do you officially like us?
Corbin is a huge Yankee fan too and that seemed to matter until another team offered him an extra year. Think it would be the same here.

Machado: Update - Manny, do you officially like us?
I’m actually way more worried about the Phillies than the Yankees. Think it will ultimately come down to money and the Phillies are going to be more motivated to go higher.

Harper to Phillies 13yr/330 mil
God awful is definitely an extreme exaggeration, but ERA is not a great metric to use for relievers, by fWAR they were more middle of the pack, and half of that came from Chavez/Wilson/De La Rosa who are all gone. Strop/Cishek/Edwards/Morrow are solid provided they're all healthy, but they probably need another arm.

Update: Machado met with Sox
https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=1&season=2018&month=16&season1=2000&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=16,d Looking back over the past 20 or so years, the Rockies have the worst wRC+ of all teams on the road by far. 2nd is Arizona and those two teams are way below everyone else. Now what’s more likely, that they’ve had far worse hitters than every other team or that they have to deal with an altitude adjustment when they go on the road? Road splits in general are misleading but especially so for Rockies hitters.

Update: Machado met with Sox
Judging Rockies hitters on road splits is a bit unfair due to the Coors Hangover effect. I think Arenado would be just fine. Waiting for him would be foolish though.

Sox trade for Yonder Alonso; Alex Call to CLE
The only scenario where he gets more than 526 PA is if he is absolutely mashing at the plate, and even if he is I still have doubts he’d get there unless we were somehow competing for the playoffs. So there’s really nothing to worry about.

Sox trade for Yonder Alonso; Alex Call to CLE
Based on that if it weren’t for the Machado connection then this move makes absolutely zero sense.

Sox trade for Yonder Alonso; Alex Call to CLE
This is a really strange take. They don’t care about getting good value for the $9 million, he was brought on for one reason.

White Sox Sign C James McCann
https://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/card/66068/omar-narvaez This includes framing, and with it included he is pretty much replacement level. His framing was so bad last year it negated his bat entirely.

Really wanted Grandal. Oh well.

White Sox Sign C James McCann
I don’t get the point. He shouldn’t cost anything but if you’re going to get a light hitting catcher at least get a decent framer.

It might just be semantics but I don't view adding 1 win as a major upgrade. Almora also sits often against tough RHP so as a full time player his value would probably be worse. Also he only had a 89 wRC+ and according to Statcast he actually significantly overperformed, which is frightening. He's not a good hitter. He's better than Engel sure but that's not a high bar.

Rosenthal: Could Harper be headed to the southside
Let’s sign Harper, he still gets to hang with his buddy Bryant, and then after we win the World Series in 2021 Bryce recruits his buddy to the South Side and they finally get to play together. Oh and Eloy Jimenez wins MVP and Dylan Cease wins the Cy Young. Cubs are so shellshocked they move to Portland. You heard it here first.

White Sox looking at Grandal
Seriously, if we can get a good discount because teams overreacted to one series then I'm all for it.

White Sox looking at Grandal
Yeah I personally think he's the 2nd best catcher in the game behind Realmuto so the hate he gets here is confusing.
