  1. It might just be semantics but I don't view adding 1 win as a major upgrade. Almora also sits often against tough RHP so as a full time player his value would probably be worse. Also he only had a 89 wRC+ and according to Statcast he actually significantly overperformed, which is frightening. He's not a good hitter. He's better than Engel sure but that's not a high bar.
  2. Almora 2018 WAR: 1.1 Happ 2018 WAR: 1.5 You and I have different definitions of "significant".
  3. Let’s sign Harper, he still gets to hang with his buddy Bryant, and then after we win the World Series in 2021 Bryce recruits his buddy to the South Side and they finally get to play together. Oh and Eloy Jimenez wins MVP and Dylan Cease wins the Cy Young. Cubs are so shellshocked they move to Portland. You heard it here first.
  4. I love Milwaukee and I thought Cleveland was great when I was there. Didn’t understand why it gets so much hate. But I’m also partial to cities that don’t have suffocating crowds.
  5. Seriously, if we can get a good discount because teams overreacted to one series then I'm all for it.
  6. Yeah I personally think he's the 2nd best catcher in the game behind Realmuto so the hate he gets here is confusing.
  7. I don't see why signing Grandal would affect going after Harper/Machado.
  8. IMO it's an overpay. Fangraphs predicted 2/26. Crowdsource predicted 3/42, I wouldn't have gone above that.
  9. How much money would the pay cuts even save anyway? Just makes zero sense.
  10. I agree, it's all based off a study on the performance teams have paid for in FA, it's not what their actual valuation of $/WAR is, it's misleading.
  11. These are my thoughts as well.
  12. IMO UZR >>>>> DRS, DRS gets way too funky at the extremes. Every year there are guys at both ends of DRS with absurd numbers that aren't close to what the other defensive metrics capture. It also has too drastic of an effect on bWAR for pitchers. The credit BR gave Nola in 2018 for the Phillies' DRS rating was ridiculous. I'm not putting much stock in Bryce's 2018 DRS numbers.
  13. So much for that quote at the beginning of the offseason about how executives around the league felt things would move quickly this year. It’s somehow been slower than last year’s snoozefest.
  14. Only way this makes sense to me is if the Mets are really down on Thor’s future health outlook.
  15. Fangraphs predicts 3/39. Crowdsourcing (which has been more accurate the past few years than the Fangraphs predictions) predicts 3/30. He'll probably get more than 3/30 but I don't see him exceeding 3/39, at least in AAV. Maybe someone gives him a 4th year.
  16. Well it’s a good thing no MLB games are played during those months. Harper can live elsewhere during that time.
  17. Why play a guy who's a good defensive CF at 1B?
  18. The $9 million/WAR figure comes from a study done on how free agents have performed relative to the contracts they were given, I don’t think it’s an actual reflection of how front offices value WAR. I don’t think any GM is valuing league average players at $20 million/year or that they’re expecting league average production out of players they’re giving $20 million/year.
  19. Fangraphs predicts Grandal to get 3/39, that really shouldn't impact a Machado/Harper pursuit. He's arguably a top 2 catcher in the league depending on how you value framing. We haven't had a decent framer in a few years and Grandal is so good at it that he's been worth 23 WARP over the last 4 seasons. Would definitely be a huge boost for our pitchers, I'd be more than fine with that signing.
  20. I'm in the Machado over Harper camp myself due to many of the reasons listed here. I also think many are overrating Harper's marketing potential, baseball players in general just aren't that marketable. It doesn't help that if you go to a game to see a player you'll only see him involved in a handful of plays. I think the potential impact there is being overstated.
  21. Title of the article seems very clickbaity, all Theo said was that he doesn't believe any player should be untouchable if the right deal comes along, which makes sense. That doesn't mean he wants to trade Bryant.
  22. IMO it was clear interference but the fans shouldn't be in position to do that anyway, there should be some space between the wall and the front row.
  23. The graph stuff reminds me of this scene.
  24. "That single by Story is a win for the Cubs" - Mendoza "No harm, no foul" - ARod LOL
