1 surprise, 1 disappointment, 1 dark horse
OmarComing25 replied to he gone.'s topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (soxforlife05 @ Mar 28, 2018 -> 02:51 PM) Don’t mean to nitpick I don’t know if you watched the games in ST but he is far and away our best starter and it’s not close. He’s maturing into a real pitcher versus a guy who just tries to overpower people like he did in the past. Moving the batter’s eyes around, locating pitches well, taking a little on/off pitches, sharper breaking stuff, fastball with more life than in recent past. There’s something to be said about confidence and mound presence now and he has it. I was absolutely terrified when he was rumored to be moved for the rental Machado this offseason and we are seeing why. He also dropped his arm slot. That and his increased velocity this spring are the biggest reasons why I'm more bullish on him now than I was at the end of last season. -
I'd be for it if we got a good prospect back, but given how the Dodgers operate I doubt they'd be willing to give up someone of that caliber.
-
I don't think Engel will hit well enough to even be a viable 4th OF, but his defensive capabilities should not be in question. Statcast had him as the 2nd best defender in baseball last year after Buxton. The eye test backs that up as well.
-
I like Cordell, and I don't know how accurate these minor league batted ball metrics are, but one potential major concern I have when look at his numbers is that Cordell's pop-up rate makes Todd Frazier look like Joey Votto (~30%+ in his last three stops, yeesh).
-
I know he doesn't really have a market at this point but I have to agree with Eminor that if the AAV falls into the $12 million range I highly doubt he'll go long-term with it. I just don't think there's any chance he'll sign for 4/48 or 5/60.

Yoan or Eloy - who will have the better MLB career?
OmarComing25 replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Have to go Moncada here, mostly due to defense and speed. -
The Astros had a historically good offense last year and the Yankees lineup this year could break the homerun record. Neither lineup has a middle of the order left handed bat. I don’t care what hand a guy uses just give me the better player. Same goes for pitchers.

I’m not really that worried about the payroll. For much of the previous decade we were consistently in the top 10 for payroll, and while I don’t think we’ll be a top 5 payroll again like we were in the past a few times, top 10ish should be reasonable, and at the very least we should be top half. The 15th highest payroll last year was $140 million (10th was $163 million), in 2019/2020 a $150 million payroll will probably be below average, and there’s no reason we couldn’t go that high.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 22, 2018 -> 08:07 AM) Yeah, but if he had every day PAs, one would suspect Dyson would be exposed a bit offensively, bringing down the WAR contributed by his offense? Yeah Dyson is completely useless against LHP so he needs to be platooned, which eats up another roster spot. You can’t rely on him to be a full time player so that is reflected in his value. Still a great deal by Arizona though.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 21, 2018 -> 02:38 PM) I don't think 50 PAs is a good sample size. If you increase the cutoff to 300 PA Moustakas is #91
-
The bullpen actually doesn’t look to be as much of a dumpster fire as I expected. Obviously not a great group, but I don’t think they’ll be a huge liability either.
-
QUOTE (FloydBannister1983 @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 07:33 AM) Let that be a lesson to you. Having any doubts about Moncada is tantamount to blasphemy. And he's no longer even the crown jewel. Wait till the first time you post "Jimenez's 0-4, 3 strikeout night was less than ideal" or "I'm no expert but I don't think 8 walks from Kopech is to be desired". Whoa Nelly the reaction to that will dwarf the outrage at just mildly expressing your thoughts about Moncada. If you think those statements will elicit outrage here then you must have never visited a game thread.
-
I'm trying to think of a scenario where Moncada could play poorly enough in Spring Training to deserve losing the job and I can't. Maybe if he never swung the bat? Didn't make contact once? Struck out every PA? And even if he did do that there's no one to replace him at the moment. Yolmer is slotted at 3rd.

2017-2018 MLB player movement rumors and reports
OmarComing25 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Boras gets it done again, even in this market. It’s funny though that the Padres took in Dave Cameron, who put Hosmer as his #1 free agent landmine. I just don’t get it. If a contending team signed Hosmer to this it’d be questionable, but the Padres are likely going to waste two prime years of an average 1B, and this move also forces Myers back to the OF where he can’t stay healthy. Just a puzzling move. -
QUOTE (Jack Parkman @ Feb 13, 2018 -> 04:23 PM) Nah, to me his 15-16 looks like the outlier. This year is huge for Machado. If he has an obp in the .310-.330 range again he's not going to get a contract over $200 million xStats has his expected 2017 batting line at .291/.340/.542, and considering his BABIP was 40 points below his career average and his exit velocity was elite I'm inclined to think he was just unlucky last year.

Donaldson will be a bit old but I think he'll age well enough and it's not like the Cubs or Astros didn't have older guys play instrumental roles in their title runs.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Feb 13, 2018 -> 10:02 AM) I already said I don't know who would benefit the Sox the most and also mentioned a starting pitcher. Arrieta is trending down , Alex Cobb, Lance Lynn, Andrew Cashner ? I love JD Martinez the guy hit 29 HR's in only 62 games with the D'backs and had a .714 Slg. % which is just crazy.. l know even at this point the best FA's still won't be cheap especially since Boras is the agent for many of the good ones still out there. I don't think the Sox have much of a chance at Machado and Donaldson will be too old. Arenado is a free agent in 2019 but he agreed to terms with the Rockies before so it could happen again so Moustaskas might not be a bad idea. Filling 3rd base will probably be hardest for the Sox and he is left handed and among the younger free agents . So a starting pitcher, and some middle of the order bats, one lefty one righty, and one who fills 2 glaring holes ( LH power and 3rd base). More quality BP arms wouldn't hurt either but that yacht seems to have saled early. Fill some holes now and some later . that's really how it should be. The chances of anyone besides the top prospects becoming an All Star are pretty slim . Sure guys like Yolmer , Leury , Delmonico and and the outfielder bunch may prove useful players but you really need some All Stars in the line up to be competitive. Sure but Moustakas isn't an All-Star level player, especially considering that it's likely that his two best years of any contract we sign him will probably be wasted.

KATOH doesn't particularly like our prospects

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 8, 2018 -> 12:41 PM) About all I like out of it is to see guys I hadn't really noticed before. I think that's the point of it though, Mitchell regularly writes articles about prospects that are often overlooked but that the stats say might be worth something. Every season KATOH correctly finds several of these guys and that's why I enjoy it. -
mikecws91 1:12 Listing Zack Collins as a 1B is fightin' words! In your eyes, what are the odds he sticks at catcher? 25% maybe? Kiley McDaniel 1:13 I think he's mid career Carlos Santana. Bat you want in the lineup, 1B/DH and maybe once a week at catcher, more of a 3rd catcher than a backup since you don't want to wear him out multiple times a week. From the chat today.

Great signing for the Mets at that price. Have to wonder where Moustakas ends up now. There are no obvious fits left except maybe the Yankees, but it seems likely they'll stick with Andujar to start the season and upgrade at the deadline if necessary. Maybe the Phillies? -

QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 5, 2018 -> 01:33 PM) Big fan of Eric and Kiley. I'm surprised how low Kopech is on most of these lists. The FV ranking is much more important. Eric has said in one of his chats that he views every prospect in a specific FV bucket as basically interchangeable, so in his view there's less of a difference here between #7 and #23 than there is between #6 and #7.
-
Given some of the other reports about Eloy's defense and arm, nice to see here that his arm is given a 60 grade and that Longenhagen thinks he has enough athleticism to play a solid RF.
-
QUOTE (Jack Parkman @ Jan 31, 2018 -> 02:35 PM) Nobody knows what his stuff will be like after the shoulder surgery. Even though, per all reports, there was no structural damage, shoulders are weird and he could come out in July/August throwing 91 and his slider might not have the bite it used to, or it could have no effect on his stuff. Until he's on the mound with the Sox, we just won't know. That's true but none of it means we should move him to the pen right now.
-
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jan 31, 2018 -> 01:21 PM) Yeah I don't get it either. Even if Rodon never improves from what he is right now, I'd still much rather have a 3.95 ERA SP than a dominant lefty out of the pen.
