2017 Cubs Catch-all thread
QUOTE (shipps @ May 9, 2017 -> 10:15 AM) Hype is often a product of what people see as potential for a guy. You can definitely see super hero type potential in a guy with his power and his natural offensive ability. He may never fulfill that potential but if he gets close it will be scary. The problem is even if he does hit like that, he's still not going to be super valuable because he doesn't offer anything else of value. His ceiling is basically prime Adam Dunn, which is a fine player, but not justified by the hype.

5/8 games
Yeah Giolito is a big project. If he's still struggling like this a year from now I'll worry. I'll wait for him to adjust to his new mechanics, which could take months.

2017 Offseason White Sox News, Notes, and Tweets thread
http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/early-bar...rlsbbe-leaders/ So Davidson is 5th in the MLB right now in barrels per batted ball at 23.1%. For those who don't know, a barrel is, as Podhorzer puts it in the article, a ball that a batter "hits the crap out of".

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 8, 2017 -> 10:17 AM) It's official. This season of The Americans blows. Yeah I'm usually the first to defend shows that are slow burns, but this season has slowed to a crawl. Nothing is happening and this is the penultimate season. Just disappointing.

2017 Cubs Catch-all thread
Yesterday's Yankees-Cubs game broke the record for most strikeouts in a game, and was only the 3rd game in MLB history where all 18 starters struck out at least once.

5/7 at Orioles
QUOTE (daggins @ May 7, 2017 -> 02:01 PM) Rodon Q always walked a fine line - we may just be witnessing the beginning of the end. I'd be more worried if the underlying numbers looked a lot different but so far Q's zone rate, O-Swing%, swinging strike rate, contact rate, hard-hit% and soft-hit% are all almost exactly the same as last year, he's still pretty much the same pitcher.

This game is a good example of why ERA sucks

Bad luck again for Q on that hit.

May 6th Game Thread: White Sox at Baltimore
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ May 6, 2017 -> 07:32 PM) Yep. Danish, Cooper and Guerrero would all be more interesting. Heck I'd rather give Luebke a shot. Lopez will be up soon enough. Shields and Rodon to follow. Hopefully this is it for Covey. Lopez has to cut down on those walks before he's ready to come up.

5/6 Games
Lopez with lots of control issues, 5 walks through 4.

So apparently our guys hate Miley? That was crazy.

5/4 - White Sox @ Royals Game Thread
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 4, 2017 -> 04:15 PM) Just noticed Bregman doesn't have a homer yet. Swanson garbage. Benintendi (unavailable), Judge and Turner (unavailable) were the only difference makers, it seems. A bit early to make such judgments on any of them, good or bad.

Nice AB by Davidson to draw the walk after being down 0-2

2017 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ May 4, 2017 -> 02:22 PM) I have heard 10x more about Aaron Judge this year then I have Mike Trout. That makes sense though. Trout is doing what he usually does, while Judge is a rookie vastly exceeding expectations.

Fantastic Starts and Where to Not Find Them
QUOTE (ron883 @ May 4, 2017 -> 12:45 AM) I love how people bump these threads when Jose goes on a hot streak. His hot streaks are followed by the inevitable awful cold streaks Jose goes on. When Jose goes cold, he goes COLD. The dude just isnt that great of a player. Whenever you post about him slumping he seems to heat up, 2 homeruns in his last 2 PA, I think you should keep posting about him.

2017 Offseason White Sox News, Notes, and Tweets thread
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ May 4, 2017 -> 12:15 PM) Second base maybe? Third if Frazier is traded? I really don't know. What I do know is that he still has more potential than Saladino/Davidson/Yolmer/Leury/etc even if his prospect status has faded in recent years. Sure but the Rangers aren't just going to let him go for nothing, and I'm not really interested in giving up anything meaningful for him at this point, he's shown nothing. Plus even if he figures it out he's a free agent pretty soon.

2017 Watercooler TV thread
QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ May 4, 2017 -> 01:12 AM) Also, any idea why Kim said "Bingo!" at the end of the episode? I couldn't figure out what trick they pulled. They want Chuck to play the tape in court. My guess is so they can argue that Jimmy wasn't committing a crime and was just trying to tell Chuck what he wanted to hear in order to console him. In the tape at the end Jimmy says "You feel better, right?" I assume that's the angle they're going for.

SSS Theater: Avi Garcia
Regarding his defense, he may actually have improved. In both 2016 and 2017 his UZR and DRS numbers are both positive, and in this Fangraphs article about the new Statcast defensive data he was the 4th most improved outfielder defensively from 2015 to 2016. Obviously a pretty small sample size, but at the very least I think it's fair to say he's no longer a disaster out there. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/examining-t...-probabilities/

SSS Theater: Avi Garcia
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ May 3, 2017 -> 01:10 PM) Avi is up to 1.5 fWAR and amazingly, with his catch last night, he's now positive (.3 runs) defensively. His K rate is down to 21.7% and his GB/FB ration is a 1.52. His pull % is 45.6. Those are all very positive indicators. Even if you regress his BABIP down 100 points he'd have a 283/333/529 line. Which hell, if he finished this season with that line I'd be thrilled. ZIPS now thinks he'll finish with a wRC+ of 102. I think it's fair to say he's improved and might actually be a solid starter. Those are rest of season projections not end of season projections, so ZIPS thinks he's now actually an above-average hitter.

Updated teams interested in Q
QUOTE (raBBit @ May 3, 2017 -> 12:28 PM) This and we should be rooting for the Tigers and Royals. If Tigers fall out and make Verlander available... Royals could sell off Moutstakas, Cain and relievers. Red Sox seem like a perfect fit for needing a 3B so we need the Royals to pick it up so they go after Frazier instead of Moustakas. Unfortunately I don't have any faith in them turning it around, they're bad.

Updated teams interested in Q
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ May 3, 2017 -> 11:43 AM) How many TOR starters will be available though? I think Q's should be pretty safe as long as he keeps pitching well. To your point though, we should be aggressive with the back-end guys like Gonzalez & Holland. I'd start seriously marketing these guys as soon as June. The market #4 starters could be saturated by July 31st. The one team I worry about is Texas. They're off to a poor start and if that continues they may consider trading Darvish at the deadline.

2017 Watercooler TV thread
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 3, 2017 -> 09:52 AM) So was the Cartel leader in the begging scene of BCS the same guy they came to kill in one of the late season BB episodes? I vaguely recall a scene where they went back to Mexico and there was a shootout at a Cartel leader's home. Yes, Don Eladio was the guy Gus poisons with the tequila in Breaking Bad.

Updated teams interested in Q
Just a point of comparison, two weeks ago Duffy's ERA was 1.32 and Quintana's ERA was 6.75. Now their ERA is separated by a mere 0.21.

May 2nd Game Thread: White Sox at KC Royals
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ May 2, 2017 -> 09:56 PM) f*** that that's RV thinking. If you can't trust a pitcher to not blow a 6 run lead they shouldn't be on the roster.
