Not sure if this thread is about Lucas Giolito, the trade with the Nats, the Sox ownership structure, Jerry's longevity, or income tax law. Giolito has a chance to be a starter. Even if he is a bust, Adam Eaton had to go just like Sale had to go. This is more of a purge than a rebuild although, at some point, it just becomes a question of semantics.

*If the decision for the last spots for position players on the 25 man roster came down to picking between player A and player B this is Iwhat I might decide: Bourjos v May - I'd go out on a limb and take May. Sox will probably take Bourjos. I'm fine either way. Asche v Avi Garcia = I'd take Asche and release Avi. Asche has more home run potential and I'm just kind of tired of Avi. Davidson v Delmonico - I'd take Delmonico and say goodbye to Davidson. Tough call there though. Yolmar Sanchez vs Leury Garcia Coin toss. I'd like to have both of them on the roster if possible. Any possible long shots? Danny Hayes? Kevan Smith? Probably not.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Mar 7, 2017 -> 05:30 PM) The White Sox should reprimand all scouts who had any say in acquiring Shields. As cheap as the Sox are, they sure throw away a lot of money due to bad decisions.... I can't imagine anybody with a brain paying money to go to any game Shields pitches at the Cell. Same with Holland for that matter. Why would you pay good money to see those stiffs pitch?? I can't believe those of you who love the draft trust our front office to draft impact player(s). There have been so many busts in the past or guys not worthy of being a No. 1 pick. Just look at the Sox history. Agree about Shields and Holland. I wouldn't be surprised if those two last about as long as last years inning eating rotation vets John Danks and Matt Latos did last season.

The best development is to have him face major league pitching every day. I am guessing he will be up in May.
-
No tank...beer. Sox look too good for last place.
-
The uncertainly about Tilson's injury and his durability opened up CF for Bourjos Avi Garcia will start in RF and Melky in LF which is really not what I wanted to see. They don't hit well enough to justify sub-standard defense. Fourth and fifth outfielder probably Leury Garcia and Cody Asche. It would be great to improve the outfield with a trade. Have pitching, need outfielders.

Fulmer and Renteria ejected?

QUOTE (reiks12 @ Mar 18, 2017 -> 02:33 PM) Fulmer not looking very sharp I wonder if they will reassign him to the minors after this game and at what level.

Hawk reducing games in 2017 - offers to step away from PBP after 2017
tray replied to Sleepy Harold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Most baseball fans in Chicago who dislike or even hate Hawk are Cubs fans, and that is the way it has always been. I hope the Sox find another play-by-play announcer who is as talented as Hawk, someone whose love of the sport and enthusiasm for the team and the players is apparent in what he says and how he says it. Meanwhile Bennetti was announcing a basketball game yesterday. Nice kid, but kind of creepy and way too candy@ss for most Southsiders. We need another alpha male to take Hawk's place when he decides to retire and a color commentator that makes fans laugh and enjoy watching the broadcast. Bennetti and Stone try to come off like baseball's version of the Smother's Brothers. It just doesn't work. -
Quintana's start in the WBC against a line-up of All-Star players is a further reminder of his value. The fact that a team does not want to trade a top prospect for him is fine, but it doesn't mean Quintana wouldn't be even more valuable than a top prospect would be, especially for a team wanting to get to and through the play-offs, maintain consistency throughout the season and year after year...and for a reasonable, ascertainable amount of money. Quintana is easily as valuable as Austin Meadows or any number of other players. The fact that teams do not agree is fine, but that is no reason to capitulate and trade him for "depth" in the farm system. Hahn has to strike gold if he trades Quintana because that is what he is worth.

Hawk reducing games in 2017 - offers to step away from PBP after 2017

I can't stand Jason Bennetti as an announcer. .He's awful but he was lucky to be in the right place at the right time. No one will ever repeat Benetti's wimpy Godawful "my goodness" Ugh.. -
If Moncads figures it out defensively at second base and the Sox bring him up n May, what do they do with Saladino, especially if he is picking it at second base and hitting for average and power? Trade him? I like Saladino not only because of the way he plays the game, but because he seems like a great team player with a positive attitude. I don't want to see him on the bench or traded.
-
Saladino has proven that he can hit and play excellent defense. He is worth more to the White Sox than his trade value. Sox will be better than last season. Tanking will not happen. I look forward to the Opener.

"White Sox fire sale isn’t over — it just got paused"
tray replied to ChiSoxFanMike's topic in Pale Hose Talk
There was one interview where JR said that if his sons kept a team, it would be the Bulls, but he did not indicate that they would sell the team, nor have there been any indications from them that they would. His sons are great people and would be great if Jerry steps aside at some point. It is my opinion that the Reinsdorf family will continue treating the White Sox like a family franchise. -
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Mar 9, 2017 -> 05:00 PM) Moncada to CF Yes, that would appear to make sense based on his speed, but we have not seen him play CF yet. I just want to see Moncada make better contact at the plate than he has thus far, He could be a force on the bases. Leury Garcia looks like he has really made some strides this Spring. There are going to be a lot of hard choices for the last few spots.
-
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Mar 3, 2017 -> 04:10 PM) I'm pretty sure he's trolling Because you disagree? How do you know that Moncada will hit for average and power like Benintendi?
-
QUOTE (Tony @ Mar 7, 2017 -> 03:34 PM) Stop. Stop discussion about baseball? On what basis are you issuing that order?
-
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Mar 7, 2017 -> 03:16 PM) And you know this...how? My opinion which is shared by a lot of people, including Ron Fowler, the Padres Executive Chairman. http://www.csnchicago.com/chicago-white-so...itical-comments Oh, did you watch any of Shields starts for the White Sox last season or his start on Spring Training yesterday or his interview after that? http://www.csnchicago.com/video/shields-i-...ht-i-was-decent There is a train of thought that the Sox should lose as many games as possible. Even for those who subscribe to that theory of rebuilding, you do not want to burn up the arms of our pitching staff covering for this guy and you never want to field players that look like they aren't giving maximum effort, or sloughing off questions after poor performance. He's gotta go, at least in my opinion. Let's agree to disagree and see how this works out one way or another.

Sox were not very good last year so it is not going to far out on a limb to suggest that they might be better this year. If you just look at the 2016 Opening Day roster it is not hard to imagine that, even without Sale and Eaton, this team could be somewhat of an improvement. There have been a lot of additions by subtraction off of that 2016 roster: John Danks, Matt Latos, Matt Albers, Austin Jackson (given that he did not play most of the year), Jimmy Rollins, Brett Lawrie... And Robertson, who blew a lot of critical leads and games will likely be traded before too long.
-
QUOTE (steveno89 @ Mar 7, 2017 -> 02:56 PM) They are not going to cut Shields, no matter how bad he is this season Sox still owe him about $10 million this year and next and are not going to flush $20 million down the drain while rebuilding. He needs to eat innings. You missed the point. Shields is not an innings eater. It is exactly the opposite. And he doesn't really want to pitch any more. You cannot have a loser like that on the mound and expect to sell tickets. Even John Danks was trying to win every game he pitched in. Shields has to go. The sooner better....and that has nothing to do with rebuilding.
-
Shields may be cut before Opening Day. It almost looks like he is intentionally pitching poorly so he can get an early paid retirement. It is really hard to watch his nonchalant attitude and lack of competitive demeanor. That is what the Padres Owner got angry with him about in the first place. No way should the Sox have traded for him. So please, go ahead and cut Shields. That would actually help the pitching staff by not having to cover the remaining innings in games where he gets the hook early. Quntana, Rodon, Miguel Gonzales, Giolito, Lopez, Fulmer, and Holland (and maybe others) are all better options than Shields for the starting rotation. And unlike Shields, every one of them truly wants to win every game they pitch. The Sox made a mistake last season by having John Danks in the rotation to start the season because they were reticient to cut a guy they owed millions of dollars to. So they eventually had to cut him and pay him, but Danks left us with several losses to boot, including the Opening Day loss. Don't make the same mistake. Bite the bullet, eat his salary, and release him.

Red Sox acquire Chris Sale, White Sox get Moncada+
tray replied to Southwest Sider's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I would have preferred Benentendi and Devers to Moncada and Kopech based on what the team needs. -
QUOTE (Sleepy Harold @ Mar 3, 2017 -> 02:50 PM) Remember he is ONLY 21. I guess I was expecting the immediate impact of a hitter like Benintendi for Chris Sale. I am not concluding that Moncada was over hyped but I am starting to wonder if he will turn out to be as good of a player as his rating as a number the number one prospect in baseball. http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/red_sox...ying_to_be_more
