Maybe but I'm reading that unlike the past 21 years when the MLBPA basically gave the owners everything they wanted, this time they have some core points they aren't willing to move off of without the owners giving some significant concessions.

We'll see.

It would be "typical" Sox luck though that in an important off season for the future of the franchise a labor disagreement would seriously screw things up. (See: 1981, 1994...)

Agreed. Plus...what does the CBA have to do with a bunch of owners and GMs gathering in some warm weather location to talk shop and tip a few back? Makes zero sense....

If there's a lockout nothing (free agent signings, trades, waiver claims, Rule 5 draft, etc.) is allowed to happen, so meetings would be pointless for the time being. BTW, meetings are scheduled for Maryland this year.

Here's an article by Fox Sports chronicling how the CBA expiring could affect the White Sox rebuilding plans.

I keep wondering why this has gotten such little play. I presume the owners will eventually cave on the international draft. That is the real sticking point in the entire equation (in the sense that they need to give something pretty good back to the players union and thus far I don't think the qualifying pick change is quite enough).

And as noted a possibility in the article I linked.

If this has happened, a deal will get done or at least I would think it would. Nothing else is out there that I would see being worth the owners locking out the players and dealing with the PR that comes with it (especially following such a highly rated post-season).

Yup. Way too much for both sides to lose to risk a lockout at this point.

Shoot. I was really hoping an international draft would get done so that teams besides the Red Sox, Cubs, Yankees, Dodgers, and Rangers would be able to get top Latin talent anually. Maybe they'll deepen bonus pools or increase penalties for going over international allotment.

It wasn't worth a lockout, though.

It has been a little ridiculous how "the rich are getting richer", so to speak, in terms of talent from Latin America.

I'm with you, I hope they institute penalties that are enough for teams to not overpay the Latin talent. That would be just as good for me as an international draft.

I was really hoping for the international draft.

Lol I hope the MiLB portion isn't affected somehow, I really need to use the job fair for interns.

Rosenthal tweeted a few hours ago that the owners "concession" on the compensation issue hasn't made progress with the MLBPA.

Why wouldn't it? From what I've read the owners were just sticking to the need for an international draft. If they've pulled back from that requirement, what's the issue now? Something about QO compensation??

Which is precisely why there will be a lock out.

The saddest part to me of the White Sox current situation is that they are trading Sale now to get back players they would not sign years ago becasue they love that stupid international penalty that did not hurt any teams as far as I can tell and made the rich richer.

If the owners gave up the International Draft, that probably puts the QO system back into play as it has been reported that the owners were willing to give that up in exchange for the draft. I can't see the owners giving up on both and getting nothing back. It seems dumb for the players to fight an international draft, as it helps keep money from going to players that will never make the majors and allows teams to invest that money in MLB players. Plus it helps clean up a lot of the corruption that happens with the buscados and the human traffickers that have brought Cuban players into the country.

I would guess the players also want the luxury tax bumped or removed and instill penalties for teams that do not meet a minimum salary. Season length, roster size seem like issues that both sides should be able to move on quickly. I do wonder if one side if holding out for a league-wide DH as was speculated about a year ago.

One issue that I could see being a big wedge for the players is the pay of MiLB players, I could see them holding out to get a significant increase there as it affects almost 100% of their membership at some time or another.

What I don't understand is why the players would have risked anything over the international draft. I'm also disappointed that ownership doesn't seem to have any ideas for how to give something to the players other than the QO system, which affects vanishingly few of them.

This is where deadlines are your friend. I would be super shocked if tomorrow ends without a deal.

National Harbor, Maryland??? That site alone may be the reason the GM's are stalling.
