Do teams still get picks for losing free agents? If so, is it still a 1st rounder?

 

Just wondering how this new CBA will impact Frazier's trade value.

That seems... controversial

All of the draft pick/free agent changes won't go into effect until next offseason by the way. Still lose a 1st rounder for signing QO players this offeason obviously.

This does make some sense though. For example, Sox could hang on to Melky for the season, give him a QO. He declines and Sox would get a 1st round pick for him. It's stops teams from doing it with guys that aren't worth it. He wouldn't be getting a $50 million contract so in this instance, there's no reason to hang on to him. Frazier is a different story.

Surely the White Sox will continue to be defined as a large-market team while Detroit and St. Louis, not to mention the rest of the AL Central, continues to be considered small market.

 

Sox never took advantage of that international cap to sneak one or two years of huge Latin American classes into the system. As someone else said, rich and forward-thinking teams got richer and richer, everyone else got left behind at the starting line.

They'll be judged as a large market team in a market dominated by another franchise.

This won't change much for the Sox. Nothing in it should instigate the Sox to give any more than their usual half-hearted effort on the international front; the forward-thinkers are now limited, so the Sox won't be hurt as badly by their international lethargy.

Yep, and the Cardinals will be treated like a pitiful little franchise in need of some help again.

I wonder if this $50M thing will become a negotiating tactic. Like teams who are trying to sign a player away from a rival may offer something like 4 yrs/$49.8M to beat someone else's offer of 5 yrs/$57M in order to not give their rival a 1st RD pick compensation. Shorter, higher AV deals might be more in vogue to get around that. Although that would probably be rare and very specific instances to matter.

It probably means when Frazier signs elsewhere for $50M+, because he will. Instead of receiving a comp pick after the 1st RD, it may be a comp pick after the 2nd RD, or whatever they deem the "market size" penalty to be.

 

Which means keeping Frazier and collecting the QO probably doesn't do much for us, as a pick in the early 30s is far more exciting than a pick in the late 60s.

Jeff Passan reported the AP says the MLB All-Star Game will no longer decide WS home field advantage.

 

I'm not a fan of this move. MLB All-Star game is the highest rated of all the all-star games, and players try the hardest. All the other sports all-star games are a joke and no one watches.

Oh, you mean in trades of Frazier for this offseason, yeah. Too bad they didn't make a clause where that would only affect players with 2 or more remaining years left, so it wouldn't affect trade dealings of this current offseason.

The new cba Impacts the high market teams. International cap at $5 million and huge tax penalties for going over the luxury tax. Building your farm system and Development of your own players is a must. I think this has a tremendous impact on the White Sox trade market this offseason. This might take out the Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox, and Cubs out of spending big money and making deals because they are already at or above the luxury tax. New CBA states if over $40 million on the $195 million salary cap/92% penalty. Ouch! Dodgers already past that.

So did the teams that would have been restricted from being allowed to spend in players in LatAm now get to spend 5 m?

Specific details haven't come out regarding that issue.

I'm reading the draft rules as no more 1st round pick in compensation. Rosenthal saying it'll be a 2nd or 3rd rounder in return. If that's the case, then the Royals got f***ed. They have decisions to make. Cain, Escobar, Hosmer, Moustakas, Duffy, and Davis are all free agents. I thought they'd just QO most of them and get 4-5 1st rounders. Not the case anymore. They probably need to sign who they can and trade the rest. Yikes.
