They also have Larazito that could generate interest in a deal.

From the A's I'd ask for: 2B/SS Franklin Barreto, LHP A.J Puk, RHP Logan Shore, and OF Lazarito

Unless the A's plan on spending big in free agency I don't see how a trade for Q makes any sense. That team needs alot of help to be competitive.

The A's also have Ryon Healy, Renato Nuñez, and Matt Olson but I don't know why they would trade for Q. It wouldn't make any sense.

Trading for barreto as headliner is like asking for Newman without a glasnow/bell. As aren't a fit for me.

That gives us the framework for one of the top 3-5 rotations in baseball and a dominant bullpen centered around Burdi and whatever's left when all the chips like Robertson and Jones are cashed in (and the starters sort themselves out.) If we don't get what we need for Q, Jones, Frazier and Abreu...it doesn't make any sense to dump the last two for 75 cents on the dollar.

 

Cleveland's budget was stretched to the limit with Encarnacion...to the point where they can't afford Rajai Davis. If they lose Carlos Santana after 2017 to free agency, Encarnacion ages quickly and Brantley never is the same (see Sizemore), they'll be vulnerable more quickly than anyone imagined.

Okay - so let's assume that they have the pieces for a rotation that's good to go by 2018. And Collins scores at catcher and Moncada at 2B.

Now you need 3 OFs and a 3B and a bench. (L Garcia probably isn't the utility player of the future, but a IF/OF would help a lot to allow some, dare I suggest, platooning at LF/RF/DH with one-sided players who are easier to get). And some depth would be nice.

Try to do that amount of holes via FA and trades is precisely what the Sox tried in 2014-mid 2016 that failed.

Need to complete the rebuilding.

And at some point they may need to trade Frazier at $.75 on the dollar; beats $0 on the dollar.

You've still got Frazier (in your plan), Jones, Robertson and Jennings to deal from. Not to mention Derek Holland and Miguel Gonzalez. Cabrera as a mid-season salary dump.

 

The 50/50 possibility Saladino could be a regular there at 3b. The much lower likelihood for Davidson, Sanchez or Trey M.

 

CF, to me, is the biggest issue, along with catcher...and the main reason for trading Q.

 

But let's not forget your 2018 college draft pick #2-6 in the first round and the possibility of someone like Otani from Japan who they might be able to convince could hit as well as pitch as a reliever. The possibility that Engel or Tilson might stick. Basabe could be a fast riser in 2017/18 and be on the doorstep by 2019.

 

Even if you were theoretically trying to compete in even the worst possible market (this year), corner/DH options like Trumbo, Napoli, Bautista, Alvarez, Rajai Davis and Carter abound. And we still have a full two years to pick and choose for those spots.

And let's put Collins there as an option, as well.

If Quintana and Frazier are dealt the Sox are probably still favorites for #1 overall. The cutthroat AL will provide more losses than the Padres AAA roster.

The NL still has Milwaukee, Philly, Atlanta, SD, Miami and Cincy...Cardinals finally trending backwards.

 

AL has CHW, LAA, Minnesota, TB and Oakland. Oakland and Minny should be improved. God knows what the Angels are doing.

Angels aren't tanking. I'm not counting them out of a winning season.

The problem there is the Astros, Rangers, Mariners...tough division to gain any traction in right now. The A's should be better.

 

And I forgot to mention the moribund DBacks and the enigma otherwise known as the Rockies.

The real question is what is the least you would be happy with. Would Glasnow + Newman + a couple low level pieces be OK? For me I dont think so. I also dont think I could stomach a Mateo-led return from the Yankees unless it was a mountain of depth. I cant even remember the last 5-for-1 swap, was the Johan Santana trade 5-for-1?

For just Q alone.

 

Braves: Albies, Maitian, Soroka, Toussaint. Braves probably say no, but I think it's possible because these guys are all 3-5 years away with the exception to Albies.

 

Rockies: Rodgers, Pint, Freeland and Nunez

 

Astros: Martes, Tucker, Davis, and Stubbs

 

Dodgers: Bellinger, Verdugo, Lux, and Heredia

 

Yankees: Torres, Rutherford, and Kaprielian

 

Pirates: Glasnow, Newman, Keller, and Diaz

 

Rangers: Mazara, Gallo, Profar, and Speas

Good teams need players who can flat hit the ball and packing two switch hitters of Moncada and Bell's caliber together could be the foundation of a great lineup. Maybe in a lost season the Sox give him some run at RF, but I have confidence he'll turn into a good 1b at least.

I think Meadows is the BPA, so I'd take anything reasonable with him in it, even if the second-best guy was a bit underwhelming. That said, the Yankees system has so much high second-tier depth, that I may prefer a package of several of those guys. For example, anything where Rutherford is the secondary piece is probably a big win, and the same may be true of Kaprielian. If it's possible to get both fot hose guys and neither of them be the headliner, that's the best package.

 

EDIT: I don't think the Cubs or the Rockies are realistic candidates, however, because the Cubs simply don't NEED Quintana (though of course they would certainly be better with him) enough to mortgage a big piece of the farm, and because the Rockies don't EVER do anything that makes any sense, whatsoever.

Personally, after watching this offseason, yes I undervalue Bell, because I see 1b/DH only types as who are good but not HOF caliber being overabundant and underpaid. That means that you can get guys like Abreu, Frazier, Napoli, Carter, Lind, Trumbo, Alvarez, Butler, Morneau, Bautista, and so on for less than you think in a trade or in a FA signing. You can get the elite guys - Encarnacion, for only a 3 year commitment. So yeah, I would not value Bell all that highly even if i think he will be a good hitter, because for a team that can support a $130 million payroll, this is an easy position to fill in even if your system doesn't fill it for you. A truly elite hitter, a Miguel Cabrera or Frank Thomas, fine then I will trade for that, but no one has said they think bell is a Frank Thomas level producer. For the Pirates, a hitter under team control who is decent is a huge deal, they've had a gigantic hole at that position for a decade because they can't support the same payroll we can. Josh Bell is more valuable to the Pirates than to the White Sox, and substantially so.

 

Heck, we have a guy who is paid fairly, who isn't a great producer but we control with some upside, under team control for the next 3 years. So yes, I will not pay a premium for Bell. I will pay a premium for Meadows because name our long term outfield option. If we trade for Bell, we have to trade Abreu when no one wants him or stick him at DH when he can still sometimes play the field and he's not a strong DH.
