The Rangers obviously want the Astros to pay as much as possible for Q, and if the Rangers really don't have any interest in him, what harm is it to the Rangers to play along? But then the Rangers have to spread the rumor as well, so you don't have media members squashing it.

 

There is also the chance that the Rangers were trying to fly under the radar.

Texas really isnt farm rich...they have some nice prospects. But the guy you want is in the majors right now and it's not Profar.

This came from Offman first. It seems pretty clear the Sox leaked this locally, then nationally. Then Rangers media members placed calls to their sources with the Rangers, and it got shot down.

 

It does show that clearly moving Q is still priority #1 right now.

But at the same time too, maybe they don't want to help the Sox deal with the Astros. Sure, the Astros pay more, but who knows how those players will turn out. It's possible they just didn't want the Astros to get a front of the rotation arm signed cheap for the next 4 years.

We know that Tampa was interested in Profar last week.

 

Could this be part of a three team deal assuming it isn't just leveraging for Houston? What deal makes sense for all teams?

I'm not interested in an injury-prone, relatively short tenured Profar or the strikeout king Gallo. Give me Mazara, Mendez, Taveras and Guzman for Quintana.

Mazara is nice, but Profar has less control than Q and has been mediocre at best in the big leagues. I don't know a whole lot about Mendez but I think they could get a nice position player as the 3rd piece from someone else.

Mazara, despite the fact that I think he is rather overrated, is one of those guys who the Rangers aren't going to be willing to trade because he is a key piece of the current 25-man roster. It doesn't make sense to subtract part of what you gain in Quintana.
