August 22, 20187 yr Also potential 5-6 years of player needing protection > one year of Avilan especially when next year is a non contending year

The Sox have plenty of spots for guys that are a real risk to be taken unless they plan on signing multiple FAs. It definitely isn't to the point of hurting negotiating power ala the situation a team like the Yankees are in this offseason, and likely the Sox next offseason.

Avilan has come back to earth quite a bit lately, but still....would think Hahn would have been able to do better at some point if he held onto Avilan. He is a quality major league reliever. Realistically, there had to be no offers of value on the table here. Hahn held on to him through the first deadline, when he would have loved to have moved him.

Avilan was never going to return anything significant.

Or that he didn't make it through waivers and this was getting anything in return that you could given that it is a closed market.

The Sox will add free agents this off season. I'd guess 2 of them minimum.

August 22, 20187 yr There is really no need for 4 lefties in our pen when we don't have a single reliable righty to go with them.

That means he made it all of the way through the AL, and to the end of the NL before getting claimed. That alone is probably a pretty good indication of the value of Luis Avilian if NO ONE in the AL claimed him.

Right, but that holds a little less water when he is controlled thru 2019 and can be traded to anyone again in the offseason.

Yep I was hoping the Dodgers would want both Avilan and Cedeno in a package deal since their BP is a mess that has to addressed soon. They didn't pick uo Machado and Dozier to not make the playoffs,
August 22, 20187 yr We have young prospects in the minors knocking on the door. Avilan was not a part of the long term plans
