There’s multiple reasons, but the main one is I think he’s the one guy who can actually change the trajectory of the organization.  He’d add a level of excitement & fan interest unlike any other player and I truly believe we could use that right now.

If he really was spotted working out downtown, at the Hawks game tonight, etc. then I'd be willing to bet that he has a meeting with us tomorrow or this weekend.

Gives them more leverage in trading Schwarber and/or Happ if other teams think they aren’t desperate to create a spot for Harper

I don't think the Cubs will be in on any big free agents given their existing payroll obligations

He was right on the Yu and Morrow stuff last offseason before anyone else.

I would think the Cubs would have to shed Heyward and Chatwood's contract to have any chance of it happening.

No chance the Cubs are able to trade those contracts without eating gigantic amounts of salary

Boras is likely using the Cubs as leverage. But there is always a chance they go crazy and spend.
