White Sox looking at Grandal

Featured Replies

We could also just sign Grandal and then trade him when Collins proves he is ready and then we don't have to deal with a struggling catcher during a time we all hope we are competitive, and if his bat is too good to keep down he can DH and sparingly play catcher.

  • People are acting like Grandal is garbage or ruins our shot at Harper. Grandal is a top Catcher and would be perfect to compliment a Harper move.

  • I would be pro Grandal because it has really bothered me that a rebuild full of young pitchers has given them garbage defensive catchers and framers. I don't care if we pay an FA price for it.

So the plan is to bring Grandal in to mentor Collins at catcher, then move Collins to 1b because Grandal is the everyday catcher, right?

With Collins being used as a 3rd catcher?

Already looked to see if there was a Manny connection, and it doesn't appear so

Former teammate of Machado! Perfect!

How is there not? They literally just played in the World Series together.

don't count your chickens before they hatch. Castillo is gone after next year, who knows what Seby is.

One thing it shows is Grandal doesn't appear to have a future coaching catchers.

I don't see why signing Grandal would affect going after Harper/Machado.

100%, a Grandal addition should be considered on its own merits outside of Harper & Machado.

Maybe the Sox want to use Collins like the Cubs intended to use Schwarber. 1B/DH mostly and catch maybe once or twice a week.

True. But during the World Series, Grandal was benched in favor of their backup because he couldn't catch. Grandal is an OBP machine and has really good power. But he is streaky as hell and seriously cannot catch the damn baseball.

sorry, meant significant friendship due to growing up in Florida, etc.  Manny's closest friends appear to be Schoop, Alonso, Almora and J. Jay

True.  I believe Grandal had White Sox written all over him as soon as he hit FA.

In all fairness there are about 25 teams that could use Grandal, 20 of which are closer to the playoffs than the White Sox.

Why don't the Dodgers want  him back?

He just had a bad game or two defensively.  If that caused his market to collapse, then good for the Sox.

You do know he is one of the better defensive catchers.......

Maybe the Sox should trade Collins if there's anyone left that actually thinks he's a catcher.

Also, collegiate gold glove catcher, Langeliers, could be in the mix in 2-3 years.

Seriously, if we can get a good discount because teams overreacted to one series then I'm all for it.

I really wanted Machado and Grandal at the start of the process.

If the Sox add Grandal, it reflects they don’t believe Collins is likely to stick there.  Personally, I think this type of move makes a ton of sense if that’s the case.

The idea of a guy catching 1 or 2 times per week really doesn't hold together in modern baseball. If you're giving up on the idea of the guy as an everyday catcher, it's because either you think his bat plays elsewhere and you're not going to catch him because you want him to stay healthy, or you're deciding he's just not a good enough catcher so you're making him a backup. A guy can't prepare to hit regular pitching every day and then just pick up "being a catcher" as a hobby. There's just too much work and preparation involved for the catcher's  spot.

You can call the guy your emergency catcher, that's ok, but if he's your everyday 1b, he's not a part time catcher.

I had no idea. Is that based on metrics?

Castillo is under contract for just one more season. I think Collins could be used behind the plate every now and then. Someone mentioned like Gattis. That seems pretty plausible. Besides, Sox catchers usually get hurt, so who knows. By May 1st, Collins may be the starter.

I don't follow.  Catchers don't prepare to hit?  Cubs have done this as recently as two years ago.
