Shouldn't the Angels save that money to sign their players five years from now?  Seems like an irresponsible use of money

They don't have many good young players anyway. Ohtani and maybe addell if he turns out good.

  • The $250 mill guaranteed the Sox were going to offer was a better deal to be honest.

Good luck keeping Jo Adell, idiots!

  • I guess Rick and Kenny can stop scouting Trout's relatives and friends.

Sox are running out of superstars they were hoping to sign for cheap!

Trout was never going to happen, but it take another star out of the general free agent pool meaning it will only be harder for us to ever land a young impact player.

The only way the Sox are going to get a "young impact player" is via trade. They will never pay one in FA, they demonstrated that this off season.

Hitting instructor in the Sox Dominican academy along with Keenyn Walker.

Controversial opinion - he should have taken 10 million less.

I for one feel like he should have taken 57 more years to complete the masterpiece contract.

Wonder if they would have taken Kyle Gibson.

I liked Mitchell.

White Sox would have tried to offer 250M but 450m with incentives.

And Kenny and Hahn would have said it was a better deal than what the Angels gave Trout because he had the potential to earn more money.  They would be shocked once again that Trout didn’t accept the offer and the potential to make $20 million more when he is 37 years old.

I have nothing more to add other than this is good for baseball and this thread had many hilarious comments, good job everyone.

Those two are instructing kids on how to hit a baseball?

Once again...Machado's deal was a "Bargain" compared to market rate. We will never have a chance at a top 10-15 player for under 300 million ever again. But at least we will have that Eloy money saved up for years...

How so? In the context of this signing, Harper and Machado look like overpays if Trout is only getting $36M AAV. He’s a far superior player compared to those two.

Kenny Williams just spoke with the media and he said he was surprised that Mike Trout extended with the Angels. He thought the White Sox had the best offer on the table for Trout.

No they demonstrated that they won't spend $300M . Since most all FA's will not cost $300M I think there's a reasonable chance the Sox can add a few guys  that break the Abreu contract in the coming years.

I agree, but they will be older, high risk guys unfortunately.

Well nothing is perfect . They all come with a degree of risk. Its the sole reason for the FA market being so top heavy while guys like Gio Gonzalez and Keuchel wait around forever because they are over 30 with declining fastballs and peripherals. Risk just hasn't equaled the reward in too many cases.

But you just said it, the market is top heavy with team prioritizing under 30 stars for good reason.  We’ll basically be fishing in the over 30 category and history has suggested that’s a dangerous game to play.

Wow I thought initially this 12 year 420 deal was added to the remaining two years, not including them. What a steal for LA.

I wonder if he has bonuses for things like MVPs in the contract. Considering there is a decent chance he wins a few more, he could potentially make even more on top of the $430m.

Of course but they don't come at 26 too often. Once in a while you get 27, 28 , 29. Everyone is fishing in the same waters and the ones who over pay to get them take the biggest risks but some times you have to. As we have seen with Machado and Harper the Sox cannot make  FA moves without criticism since I have seen a fair share of posts saying they rather not have them not to mention the many we saw saying Corbin and other were not worth it. How many have we seen that say Keuchel is the next Shields ? Now you really have to be sure you think you will contend before you add FA's just to get a bat or arm that's likely to produce for only a few years while minimizing the declining years risk. That's a job that's very difficult to do. How often do we see posts saying  "I think this guy will age well" based on what exactly ? Nothing scientific that's for sure.

I'm dreading when sox pay $180 for an age 29 player that turns into a crap contract but will "prove" they sign stars.
