Twins sign Simmons to 1-year/$10.5MM deal

Featured Replies

Grabbed him quickly after not getting Semian?

Fantastic defense, weakish offense.

I like this move a lot for the Twins. They have the thump in the lineup - and Simmons is a whiz defensively.  I also tend to think his bat is underrated - but I'm still a bit old school in that I have a higher appreciation for no power solid average hitters.

Is this a case of another 220 hitter against the league and 350 slap dick menace against the sox? I hope not

I know where you are going - but he's pretty much been a .275+ hitter the last few years.  He hasn't been that .220 guy since he went to the Angels.  It is empty but he's been within a stone throw of .300 most of the past few years.

18 games against the sox at a 350 clip combined with 220ish elsewhere probably puts him right in line for 260ish

If they can move Polanco off SS...they’ve already markedly improved their defensive lineup from last year.   Rosario was lousy too, in that regard.

Then they have Royce Lewis coming right behind.  Lewis could also end in CF if Buxton leaves, or Polanco, possibly moving out there.

Looks like Kiriloff has mostly played 1B/RF, then you have Larnach as well for corner OF/DH.

Which makes one think they will spend on pitching instead of Cruz.

Not to mention Max Kepler and Sano/Donaldson.   Cruz isn’t a necessity.

Then Arraez/Polanco/Adrianza for 2B/utility.

When will Ne. Cruz sign

Looks like Polanco to second base, Arraez to take Marwin Gonzalez’s superutility spot as he left via FA, Adrianza figures into the mix there as well.

Adrianza signed with Atlanta

He is better than Polanco, but Simmons has regressed a little bit defensively.

I just think Donaldson is past his prime and the name seems to scare people.  All of his injuries, miss time, are catching up to his abilities.

He really should shift into a DH/1B role.

I feel like we will hate playing against him. Is Jake Cave still on the team?

Good move for the Twins.  Both Polanco and Arraez are poor defenders.  I doubt Simmons is as good as he once was defensively, but still well above average SS.  The bat is nothing to write home about, but this makes them better.  Their pitching staff still need quite a bit of work though, in my opinion.

Simmons has the fifth highest projected 2021 fWAR (3.1) among all eligible free agents this off-season, with Springer, Bauer, LeMahieu and Semien #1-4.
