10/1: Houston wrapped up the AL West last night, and one more win by Houston or loss by the Sox will lock Houston in as the #2 seed, with Tampa Bay already having clinched the #1 seed. New Y

Following these playoff races a little closer this week really makes me realize that there are some crappy MLB bullpens out there.

Canada on Canada crime.

In the end, the Yankees, Red Sox, and Giants won. Kind of a dud, but still good it happened.

All the possible outcomes :

Boston and Yankees both win, regardless of Toronto or Seattle outcomes - Boston is the first WC and the Yankees are the second WC

All four teams lose - Boston is the first WC and Yankees are the second WC

Boston wins, other three lose - Boston is first WC and Yankees are second WC

Yankees win, other three lose - Yankees are first WC and Boston is second WC

Boston and Toronto win, other two lose - Boston is first WC and Toronto and Yankees are tied for second WC

Boston and Seattle win, other two lose - Boston is first WC and Seattle and Yankees are tied for second WC

Yankees and Toronto win, other two lose - Yankees are first WC and Toronto and Boston are tied for second WC

Yankees and Seattle win, other two lose - Yankees are first WC and Seattle and Boston are tied for second WC

All but Boston win - Yankees are the first WC and the other three are tied for the second WC

All but Yankees win - Boston is the first WC and the other three are tied for the second WC

Seattle wins, other three lose - Boston, Yankees and Seattle tie for both WC spots

Toronto wins, other three lose - Boston, Yankees and Toronto tie for both WC spots

Seattle and Toronto win, Boston and Yankees lose - All four are tied for both WC spots

So after all those wild scenarios, we ended up with Option A. We get the Yankees and Red Sox in the AL Wild Card game.

Giants won to lock up the NL West, and the 106 win Dodgers have to play baseball's hottest team, the Cardinals, in a winner take all game.

The TV networks couldn't have asked for a better group of playoff teams:

Teams from 4 of the 5 largest metro areas: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston

Teams with huge regional fan bases: Atlanta, Boston, San Francisco

The only teams that really don't move the TV needle are Milwaukee and Tampa Bay.

I am not worried about all these playoff ramifications.  As an unbiased fan, I think the WS will dispatch any of these potential threats to their rightful throne.

When are the game times supposed to come out

Would hope tonight!

They wait until after the Wild Card games, and release the final schedule based on television’s preferred time slots. The Dodgers / Cardinals also throws a monkey wrench in terms of the difference in time zones for Games 3 and 4. Games 4 and 5 are always tentative, based on the number of games remaining.

Since MLB views the Sox, Houston (and most of all Tampa Bay in the AL) as garbage, and the Yankees and Red Sox as the American League’s two premier teams, the Tampa vs. Wild Card will likely have the prime time slot of 7-8 EDT for all games.

As I type this, MLB is seeking a path for both Boston and New York to advance, perhaps suspend Houston for cheating years ago and just slate Tampa to host Boston, and Chicago to host New York, the latter in Iowa.

Rob Manfred’s Playoff Cheering Chart:

  1. New York AL
  2. Boston
  3. Los Angeles NL
  4. Saint Louis
  5. San Francisco
  6. Chicago AL
  7. Houston
  8. Atlanta
  9. Milwaukee
  10. Tampa Bay

Despite being in a small market, Atlanta has a huge following in the south. I think they'd be ahead of the Sox and Houston.

Milwaukee and Tampa Bay definitely last though. That's the league office's (and FOX's) nightmare World Series.

Weird fact: The White Sox have never both won and lost playoff series in the same year.

The South is currently in SEC mode, half of Atlanta are transplants. You can buy tickets for Brave Playoff games day of. The Sox are not the premier Chicago team in terms of ratings (at least for now), but they would still score a higher number just based on the size of the market, plus tge several stars the Sox have and the La Russa angle.

Atlanta, Miami and Los Angeles don’t give a crap about professional sports, beyond the Lakers and Dodgers.

At least one of Boston & NY goes home early.  Really wanted a 3 or 4 way tie and or a few games 163.  Oh well.

If the season ended after two months as it did in 2020, under the current ten team format:

NL Playoffs:

  • Winner [#5 Los Angeles (,593) at #4 San Diego (,618)] at #1 San Francisco (.630)
  • #3 Chicago (.566) at #2 New York (.574)

AL Playoffs:

  • Winner [[#5 Play-in Game Winner: Cleveland (.547) & Houston (.547)] Winner at #4 Boston (.604)] at #1 Tampa Bay (.636)
  • #3 Oakland (.554) at #2 Chicago (.611)

On June 16, the Sox and Giants shared MLB's best record at 43-25. The Sox finished 93-69 and the Giants finished 107-55.
