White Sox acquire reliever Gregory Santos from SF

McClure needed the change of scenery. Hopefully a good trade for both teams.

Was hoping that McClure would reprise the Clu Haywood role and be the biggest Indian killer of them all.  Once Cleveland switched to the Guardians, he was expendable.

?…Kade actually was pretty good last year for the Knights once he moved to the bullpen.  And not having him on the 40 man roster as additional depth was a nice plus.  That being said, Santos still has an option and a massively higher ceiling.  Probably a risk worth making if you want a potentially more impactful arm.

This must have been one of the exciting ideas Hahn was talking about when he was in San Diego.

I would think Katz has some influence on this trade. Pretty sure he worked with Santos extensively when he was younger.

Sisco, Ardsma, Macdougall…don’t remember who else.

I would prefer not to remember "bad bullpens of White sox past" thank you.

I remember thicc Nick Masset and thiccc Ryan Buck or Buk... whatever his name was on that team.

McClure's numbers out of the pen are a heck of a lot better than than Santos'.  Just reading Santos' scouting report, fastball really hard but really flat.  Been grabbing guys like this for years.  Same song, different verse.  Billy Koch throws harder than Keith Foulke.
Maybe, finally, this guy will work out.

Wasn't McClure a guy who was Rule 5 eligible?  If so, and no one picked him, that should tell you what people think of him.

Feels like a bad Dickens book.

McClure was exciting a few years ago when his velo increase took him from high 80s to low 90s, but that didn't really translate into anything interesting. He'll be 27 next year, and he's a low velo righty reliever that gives up a lot of home runs. He's extremely hittable.

Giants may very well find some disguise for his weird delivery/height that gets more out of him, but it ain't happening here. They have, however, shown some ability to harness better powered arms.

So good trade. No louisville pitchers ever again.

If one in ten of these guys turns into Jose Ruiz, you have won.  It isn't like you will ever hit on a big number of these guys, which is quite literally the point of churning the bottom of the roster to take chances on these types of guys.

who cares, mcclure sucks. Santos probably sucks, but he was also playing in PCL and had a better ERA in the majors than McClure did in AAA. He also doesn't give up 17 homers a year out of the bullpen.

Jimmy Lambert was better than Ruiz.  McClure probably would have been as well.

Between Kade and Hjelle, the Giants have more length than the Bulls.

Who cares if Jimmy Lambert was better.  We turned Jose Ruiz into a useful bullpen piece after being a minor league waiver claim.  THAT is the part that actually matters.  McClure is a AAA roster spot that anyone in baseball could have had a few weeks ago.

Ruiz is terrible.
Anyway, my point really isn't that McClure or Santos are good or bad or whatever.  My point is that it's the same bloody philosophy that they've been using for 20 years.

Jose Ruiz has been a useable middle reliever for pennies on the dollar of free agents.  He's put up 3 seasons which average out to just above a league average ERA.  Baseball is full of guys like Jose Ruiz on the back of most MLB rosters.  If they have been creating mlb middle relievers out of thin air for 20 years, this franchise would be in a lot better shape.

UUUUUGE

The Sox got a live arm with an option (which is quite important for their roster) for a soon to be 27 year old soft tossing RHP every team in baseball could have had for $100k like 2 weeks ago.  While its nothing to write home about, there is certainly no discernible reason to complain about this deal.
