It doesn't take much digging to figure out who public enemy No. 1 is for Pittsburgh Pirates fans.

Few fans, if any, are fans of Pirates owner Bob Nutting and Bleacher Report's rankings of the owners in Major League Baseball added a little more fuel to an already roaring inferno. Zachary Rymer ranked all of the owners in the MLB and had Nutting as the second-worst owner in baseball. Nutting was only ahead of Miami Marlins owner Bruce Sherman.

"The Pirates' value and revenues are more or less in line with their market size," Rymer writes. "From these angles, at least, you can make excuses for Nutting's refusal to consistently invest in payroll. It becomes harder to do so when you notice that his net worth is measured in billions. He ought to be treating the Bucs like his pride and joy, whereas he never spends in free agency and otherwise skimps on everything. Fans are right to want him to sell."

Crazy to think that JR, the Monforts (Colorado) and the A's owner (John Fisher) are somehow not THE WORST, but here we are...maybe JR's just missing that catchy nickname???

Due to Nutting's perceived tendency to put profits ahead of a competitive product on the field, he is often ranked in both the local press and nationally as one of the worst owners in sports, earning the nickname "Bottom-Line Bob".

25.  Jerry Reinsdorf

On the whole, though, that season is an outlier for Reinsdorf's 44 years in charge. The White Sox have been a reliable loser under his watch, culminating in a record-setting 121-loss campaign just last year.

Financials

Purchase Price vs. Value: $20 million vs. $2.05 billion (15th in MLB)

2023 Revenues: $288 million (29th in MLB)

Average Payroll Rank: 15.0

2024 Spending vs. Projected 2025 Spending: $71 million decrease

Mere months after the White Sox sold to Reinsdorf for $20 million, the crosstown Cubs sold for $20.5 million.

It says a lot that the Cubs are now a $4.2 billion franchise, a value twice as large as that of the White Sox. It also says a lot that Reinsdorf putting real money into his payrolls has not been the norm, as the team has opened with a top-10 payroll just once since 2012.

Brittany Ghiroli of The Athletic reported in October that Reinsdorf was in "active discussions" to sell the White Sox, though there has been little in the way of updates since then.

Bottom 5 of MLB Owner Rankings were Sherman, Nutting, the Monforts, Castellini (Reds) and John Fisher (A's)

The ex-player messaging has been so consistent, even those who played under the so-called new regime.

FWIW, in his 100 PAs with the Pirates, Alexander Canario has a .353 xwOBA. Only Tauchman and Slater (in even smaller samples) have higher figures with the White Sox.

I've seen his numbers being used as a punchline in here, but he has been very unlucky and has actually had well above-average metrics, just with some particularly bad luck so far (.297 actual wOBA)

Checking his numbers, they look respectable of late.

Yet Venable clearly prefers Palacios, who's a superior glue/complementary/team player...the last man off the bench on a contender, but clearly not an everyday player, either.

Thanks for sharing.  My whole point around Canario was that he was still relatively young when he was made available by the Cubs and Mets (24, turning 25), he played a position of long-term need for this team (corner OF), was once a highly touted prospect, and still had a plus power tool.  Also, while not great it looks like his strikeout percentage didn’t blow up out of control yet going from the minors to the majors, holding at around 28.5%.

And what team would have made all the sense in the world to give a guy like Canario at bats?  A crappy team like the Sox!  And at his relatively young age, you might have added a starting, platoon, or backup outfielder for beyond 2025 and/or the next good Sox team.  But I guess you wouldn’t want to block the Tauchman’s and Slater’s of the world who will be gone at the end of the season, if not earlier.  Getz has also already employed numerous bums like Jankowski, Maton, Capra, Amaya, Dalbec, etc. this season so I can’t believe anyone would rip on the idea of adding a guy like Canario.

Even sadder is how Austin Hays is currently hitting (.950 OPS).  Most posters wanted him starting in RF as the best and relatively cheap comeback player candidate available before Getz inexplicably jumped on Slater as his self-proclaimed top free agent target of the offseason.  The Reds signed Hays for $1 million more than what Getz paid for Slater + Tauchman and the Reds will likely be able to get decent prospect for Hays at the deadline.  Slater and Tauchman aren’t going to return jack squat.

If you're Hays, coming from two playoff appearances with the Orioles, why would you sign with the White Sox over the Reds unless you received 25-30% more money?

He probably wanted to play for a HoF manager, compared to a first-timer.  And the Reds, at least in 2023, looked like one of the up and coming teams in all of MLB, with lots of exciting/dynamic young players.

And Hays is a MUCH better fit for LF than RF, fwiw (that damned Benintendi albatross contract keeps getting in the way, as well).

Remember how poor somebody like AJ Pollock reacted to being on the White Sox, after the LAD?  He took a pay CUT to go to Seattle instead, where his career basically ended...instead of coming back to Chicago to play on one of the worst teams in baseball.

The first report of Austin Slater signing with the Sox was on November 18th.  Austin Hays didn’t sign with the Reds until the very end of January, so it doesn’t seem like there was a ton of interest in him.  Perhaps if Getz had prioritized Hays right away like he did with Slater, he takes $5 million from the Sox?  Who knows?

The ONLY reason Slater was targeted was because Ryan Fuller was his hitting coach at the end of the 2024 season with the Orioles...and made the recommendation based on how he performed at that time (compared to first four months of last season).

Well, I guess it would have been nicer if Ryan Fuller had realized that Austin Hays is a better hitter than Austin Slater and recommended Hays instead.  🤣

Watch out, they may win a couple of games and its' time to put you on a spit. It's amazing how a few are acting like a team that is almost guaranteed to lose the 2nd most games in franchise history, sees light at the end of the tunnel. This team is horrid.

5/7 against Detroit and KC fooled everyone.

Seemed like a sign or indicator of forward progress.

Unfortunately it's always a train

Current 51-111 pace

Fangraphs says 54.5-107.5

Split the difference you get 53-109

Schriffen was put in a tough spot with his job, but I'm starting to believe the reason he was hired was because he was so clueless and doesn't know bad baseball when he sees it. You listen to the broadcast, you would think the Sox lead the division by 10 games and have the next decade where they can only dominate.

If I could only hear Peirsal without the mute button.

He's just a team mouthpiece. Tries way too hard to be overly optimistic about a team that is historically bad. It comes across as phony and some odd sell job of a team that still appears to be years away from being competitive.

This is pretty much any of the clones connected to this franchise.  They all repeat the same things, the same way, over and over again.

Who are you referring to ? I think this guy tends to be over the top as well which just adds to how ridiculous he sounds.
