It depends though.  What kind of $$ they are offering and how does the team look at the end of the year. Bryce Harper wanted to come here in 2019 after an abysmal year.  Could absolutely see some players finding this place attractive to play.

He certainly seems to play the game of trading minor league depth for cash considerations when somebody like the Rays want Tristan Gray. Maybe Getz has a chip on his shoulder over last TDL, so he starts high and stays high. Can't say I mind that, as I'd rather not have 2 of this summer's acquisitions retire next May.

Yeah Bob doesn't really give any useful info there. People might not like dealing with a GM for more than one reason. If Getz is a liar or something, that's one thing. If it's just that he states a price and doesn't change his mind because he says what he means, that's something different. 

I also think it's a fallacy to say that Robert not being traded proves he has no value (and, ergo, picking up his option would be absurd). We don't know what was offered for him, first of all. Also, trades are about surplus value. Robert has become increasingly highly paid. No doubt his performance for the last two seasons has left plenty to be desired. That doesn't scream "I want to pay him a lot *and* give up talented players for the right to do it." The Sox are the one team that, for now, doesn't have to pay both the money and prospects for his services. I also think his market value in general and his trade market value at the deadline are rather different. Teams looking for bats to put them over the top for a playoff push likely are seeking players who they feel will perform predictably. Robert is much more clearly a gamble and that may not be the kind of gamble teams want to do with a couple months left in the season.

I would assume since the conversation was around Robert, it’s that Getz was asking other GMs for a ridiculous return for Robert, which matches another report before the deadline that he was asking for one major leaguer and two highly rated prospects.  GMs are probably frustrated with Getz because he wasn’t willing to come down on his ask and be a bit more realistic considering Robert has been mediocre to bad for 1.5 seasons and has missed a lot of time in his career due to injury.  Getz was trying to sell high on a player that didn’t deserve that type of hype and return.  If he was hitting like Eugenio Suárez that would be one thing, but he’s not even hitting as well as Benintendi on the season.

Do you think there's a "gentleman's agreement", where you're checkmated (it's 4:55, you're looking at the "best offer", and your guy's a free agent/impossible option), and you make the trade, because that's cricket? It could be seen as a dick move to announce that you'll choke on the contract and get nothing rather than get played by another GM.

Seems to me like Getz got more return for much less this trade deadline than last year.  I realize the 4 players he acquired could end up being nothing but he really didn’t trade much of value — a righty platoon OF and a mediocre starter he picked up off the street for $1.35 million on May 20th that pitched out of his mind for 11 starts.  Perhaps he learned from his dealings last year and improved.

Yeah, he probably did. And he's probably come to some semblance of the conclusion you've been yelling that trading the roster detritus for guys who have one foot out of the game already is just a waste of time. Target the guys you want, if a desired trade isn't out there, keep your guys and play the games. I'm sure that's frustrating for GMs who want your setup man for their A-ball chucker.

I also hope he continues acquiring younger position players around 24 like Mead rather than 27/28 year olds.  Teams aren’t giving up guys in their early 20’s but 24/25 seems to be the age teams are finally willing to give up on their once hyped prospects.  With the 27/28 year old guys, time flies too fast to get them MLB at bats and properly evaluate them — see Fletcher, DeLoach, and now probably Robertson.

We do have evidence that players are willing to take less money than the White Sox offer.  They have to pay a significant premium.

It's Dombrowski. He was pissed at Sox because he thought he had a deal for Crochet at last year's deadline and Sox decided to wait until offseason. He thought he could get Robert for scraps. 

If it was Stearns, he simply pivoted to Mullins and didn't give up all that much prospect-wise.
