Buehrle Hall of Fame case...

Featured Replies

I think he has a case but feels to me on the cusp like Cone, Tiant, Schilling (not on the cusp, should clearly be in, but unpopular), Kevin Brown, Saberhagen. I think if Mark pitched 3 or 4 more years, his case would look a lot stronger.

World Series ring, perfect game, and a no hitter are all some of the highest feats a pitcher can reach. Along with his lengthy streak of 200 inning seasons, or whatever that was. Hall of Very Good, absolutely. Very very good. Hall of Fame? I don't know.

While I think he's deserving, I wouldn't call it a travesty if he doesn't make it in.

First Billy Pierce then Buerhle and I also think Paul Konerko is deserving.

Don't forget Dick Allen and Tommy John.

He’d be a shoo-in if he stuck around a few more years, which he easily could have. He made his choice (which I admire) to leave the game early and focus on other things. The only way he’ll get in would be the player votes, whatever they call it.

He and Pettite are basically the same.  Pettite with more wins but had much better teams around him and also PEDs. Buehrle had better ERA and WHIP. Slightly higher WAR. Yet being a yankee will most likely give him an advantage.

The silliest part of all of this is that if he doesn't let Sosa reach first, he probably gets another 20% of the vote

Not in that generation of players...the offensive numbers were just so off the charts, and the fact that he was just an average defender (minus range, but great at scoops out of the dirt) and kind of fell completely apart there at the end of his career.

Like Buehrle, very good but not quite great.

If Ron Santo made it, Konerko should also be in. Paulie has better numbers than Santo in all offensive categories, Santo was a better third baseman than Paulie was a first baseman but PK wasn’t exactly chopped liver at first base.

Santo shouldn't be in the HOF. When he retired after his last awful season with the White Sox, did anybody seriously think he would be in the HOF. The only positive thing about his HOF induction was he didn't live to see it.

I liked Buehrle, but he's not even close to being a Hall of Famer.

Harry Truman, Doris Day
Red China, Johnnie Ray
South Pacific
Walter Winchell, Joe DiMaggio

I say yes but that's probably a biased opinion.

Buehrle was also insanely efficient time wise. I think this video was posted last year but if you haven't seen it:

My aunt & uncle decided to spend extra money one time for the scout seats & buffet. Buehrle pitched that day and they weren't happy. Def did not get their moneys worth for food & booze.

Hall of Fame not Hall of Stats. It's a marketing tool of MLB to honor and promote their product. I can't think of anyone who did more to elevate and honor the game than Mark. The game honoring him would be appropriate.

Isn’t the Hall actually an independent business?

That is the corporate structure.

Gil Hodges is another guy in the HOF whose numbers aren’t as good as PK’s but when you were a member of “The Boys Of Summer” that counts for a lot.
