They are only getting two first round picks (only one more than us!), so not sure how much you think is going towards Fox and how much is to “absorb Zach”. The reality is Zach is a key part of Sacramento’s return, which is somehow worse than what the Bulls are getting IMO.

Apparently they are worried that Doncic is fat, lazy, and possibly an alcoholic, which means he may not age well and is a potential risky investment when at a super max cost. They also didn’t really negotiate with anyone else and allowed the Lakers GM to drive the cost down by embracing their fears. Seems like the Mavs’ GM simply overthought things and made what is likely a really bad trade.

They treated Doncic like he was coming out of the White Sox organization and totally out of control in terms of personal life, not taking coaching advice, unwilling to play defense since Kyrie has never been especially declined to defend. Or like he was Sean Kemp and uber talented but completely toxic. That's a huge risk that nobody in a new organization like a Pat Riley will be able to get him to toe the company line.

Their front office now is a bunch of rich people who think their stuff doesn’t stink. Someone including their GM seems to have looked at their offense first finals team last year and decided “defense wins championships” is the correct slogan so they tried to do that with this trade. In a way this one reminds me of Reinsdorf wanting his team to be made of David Ecksteins so Chris Getz acquired a bunch of guys like that and all of a sudden they’re stunned by how terrible they are when they followed the slogans about the importance of leadership.

I guess it's the equivalent of trading Albert Belle in 1997-98 for Omar Vizquel or Ken Caminiti...but then that trade would be more about contracts and less about defensive first philosophy and "player value" in terms of chasing a championship.
