White Sox asking for "top prospects" for Robert

Pedro Grifol isn't around to prioritize "winning now" over youth.

I will believe that Pedro was someone out on a limb by himself when I see a completely different behavior this year, because we sure signed a ton of the exact same kinds of guys this winter.  Why sign them if they aren't competing?  Seems pretty convenient to me.

  • I do not see Robert getting traded, as it would likely mean they sold low on him Sox are better off keeping him and hoping that he rebuilds his trade value

The whole world thought Nick was a high first round pick.  If the Sox didn't select him, someone else would have.  The Sox failed in developing him.  Luis Arraez and Kwan show you that it CAN be done

If they are getting two top guys they want, just eat the money and be done with it.

Yeah they probably didn't need to sign as many OF as they did.

The Rojas signing is still a bit of a headscratcher. Sign an all glove, no bat 3B to play 2B/backup SS, where he's below average defensively? Might as well have just signed a backup IF who's primary spot is SS.

There were a ton of players last year who should have been playing, but did not, starting with Fletcher and DeLoach.

Fletcher got 241 plate appearances and was terrible (41 wRC+).  DeLoach didn’t get quite that long of an opportunity, but he also struggled in the majors.  More importantly, neither of them was good in Charlotte.  I don’t agree with handing major league opportunities to guys who can’t succeed in AAA.  IMO, those two are just plain scouting misses.

I get the OF additions because they are blocking no one of importance.  It will be very frustrating if Rojas takes away meaningful at-bats away from Vargas, Sosa, Meidroth, Baldwin, or Ramos.  Thaiss is a totally fine placeholder to buy some time for Teel & Quero.  Perez & Wilson are cheap options to eat innings.  We haven’t really signed any other veterans.

Pedro Grifol was a first time manager doing what he was told. And if the front office allowed him to do that for 75% of the worst season in franchise/baseball history before firing him then they are as incompetent as we all figured they were anyways.

I hate to say it, but there's a lot of truth here. It would take more than a nice spring training to remove both the odor and the injury fear.

Sure, but I don't think that should prevent the Dodgers from being proactive about a trade now. I think it's all relative to how they want to approach it.

You can make a lesser offer now, using the greater injury risk and performance uncertainty as leverage.

Or you can let things play out and if Robert looks good, you're more comfortable with him as a player, but you're probably not going to be able to buy as low as you could have earlier.

I’m not opposed to the Sox eating about $10M of his salary for 2025 in a trade if it means they get what they want (or close to it). If you think about it, if you hold him until the trade deadline, that’s about what you would have paid him anyway at that point.

I like DePaula, but I think he is unathletic. Probably leftfield profile possibly trending to left. Hope is a far better defender. He could possibly stick in center. Slam dunk in right. I could see Hope and Freeland for Robert. That said, I would rather just keep Luis. He is literally their only good player. I would love to have something to watch for at least the first half of the season.

Hope vs Freeland would be a dream.. That has got to be way too much for Robert. If DePaula or Hope were involved, idk how much i care about additional pieces

Hmm. Just signed Travis Jankowski...

is there an actual Robert/Dodgers rumor or is this speculation?

Hasn’t Hope’s prospect status been soaring recently? I’m not sure if they would even trade him for Robert.

Speculation. They sent down the Korean IF they signed this offseason.

That’s weird

If I’m the Dodgers, I’d 100% be willing to trade a non-elite OF prospect for three years of a major league OF with a star ceiling during a competitive window.  I’m not suggesting they will, but it’s a gamble they should be willing to take unless they just think his health is a completely unsolvable issue.

I’m no prospect expert but Hope has a lot of helium recently from what I’ve read. But yeah I agree with you. Robert would be much more useful for them over the next 3 years than Hope.

Benintendi and Slater are likely opening on IL. Need some depth.

Speculation and clear Dodgers fit.

Hope is probably a 55 FV prospect, which to me is a really good but not elite prospect.  Enough uncertainty with him to not lose sleep over what he could be down the road when you are the Dodgers, have a strong farm system, and are in a prime competitive window.

Any interest in adding Bobby Miller to a package???

I get that to an extent. But this guy would literally hit like 5th or 6th in that lineup (maybe 6th if they want to keep the L-R-L-R etc balance going).

I could imagine the Dodgers saying

That's not how we project him. We are thinking he's a platoon piece at best probably just a bench piece at worst. How about these other two lower ranked prospects? You don't need him this season. Everyone knows you're a few years away from respectability.

So do you think they called Getz and he turned them down?

I'm speaking as the Dodgers and theorizing what Getz is up against in making a trade.

No, I doubt Friedman has offered anything in that stratosphere yet or else a deal would likely have been agreed to.
