He’s a JR with the Bulls owner. Will spend money to a point. Luxury Tax is a big line in the sand. He may go a few thousand over, but that’s about it. NBA is different. The teams that don’t go over split the tax money. If they did that in MLB, Ricketts would never be near the line.

Cardinals are embarrassing now, too.

This is 50 times worse than Jerry.

"They think somehow we have all these dollars that the Dodgers have or the Mets have or the Yankees have and we just keep it. Which isn't true at all. What happens is we try to break even every year, and that's about it."— 670 The Score (@670TheScore) January 18, 2025

Tom Ricketts takes issue with the narrative surrounding the Cubs: "If we trade Cody Bellinger for a starting pitcher, that's a trade. If we trade Cody Bellinger to get the resources to sign a pitcher, that's a salary dump. It doesn't make any sense."— 670 The Score (@670TheScore) January 18, 2025

By replacing him with Colin Rea? really?  Fans will love the financial Brewers-like astuteness of that move?

'When you say “try to break even every year,” it connotes that you are affirmatively trying to manage money in a way that emphasizes the reduced spending part since that is entirely within the team’s control (as opposed to winning more games to generate more revenues …); and (2) teams and team-related assets have appreciated like crazy in major pro sports for decades now, so even if the team doesn’t turn an annual “profit,” it is absolutely generating significant additional wealth every year.'

Well, somehow the White Sox are the exception here to this rule.

I disagree.  Yes, they have more money to spend than the Sox but they are still spending more and are more successful.

GR already loses with their downward pointing arrow.

TD Ameritrade isn't great...but they win the corporate battle by a land slide.

Best yuppie gentrification award by a country mile.

BS.  The Cubs have somewhere around double the Sox revenue on paper, plus they took over the whole neighborhood.   They should be the Dodgers.  They are damned liars.

Bellinger turned into Colin Rea and there's just no way they keep Tucker in-house.

The Cubs spend just enough to create the appearance of competitiveness...but two years ago was their best shot.

Top 5 farm system the last couple of years but nothing close to a Jon Lester anchor this time around.

Just one shot with Tucker in 2025.

Only chance is their rookie 3B becomes a total stud.

Go BrewCrew/Chourio.

Meanwhile, the Sox are down to a $65 million dollar payroll right now?  The Sox are still worse.  We are lower than the A’s now.

In 2012, at their nadir, the Cubs went 61-101, and they drew 2.8 million. Rickets is the worst.

Cubs revenues dwarf the Sox.  They could sneeze up 250 to 300 million a year.

Dude come on. The Cubs own an entire neighborhood. They have all the resources in the world. Jerry sucks but the Ricketts are worse.

Jerry sucks in a different way...but he would never finance anything from his own pockets.

Being told no to Ricketts is more like "yes, maybe?" if he can see the long-term benefits of shorter term pain/investments.

I think the Kyle Tucker handling will tell the tale at the end of the season.  Last chance for Ricketts to spend up.

But I think the current model is to be gifted acres of prime city land to develop for free. He doesn't want to buy in a popular hood for market to develop it beyond it's inflated price.

I won’t defend a $65M payroll or Jerry for that matter, but we’re also rebuilding so you’re comparing apples and oranges.  The Cubs should be outspending us by a mile right now.  That being said, I do agree the Ricketts should be doing more theoretically, but they are also a bunch of trust fund fuckwads so who knows.

There is no rational argument for the Ricketts being worse than Jerry.  The latter is a no doubt bottom four owner in baseball right now along with Nutting,  Fisher, and whoever owns the Rockies.

I agree. I hate Ricketts on principle, but he should be basking in good will for 2016, and subsequent beatification of "Wrigleyville". And they all just hunker down and cry poor. I consider myself fairly liberal, but I completely understand a guy owning a business, and just spending what he can to get customers in the door. Spending $450M on a guy like Tucker seems performative, even if he does produce. "Look at how much I want to WIN!!!!"

Just so bro-dudes can feel mighty while taking credit for other men playing baseball and winning games.

But he shouldn't be worrying about $10M, or an extra year for a reliever, or whatnot.
