Fair enough. Most of his moves blew up in his face. Bad luck.

  • Solid move, was gonna be tough to block all the infield prospects without an addition of some kind.

No player worth anything wants to sign with this organization when it’s been in such disarray over the past few seasons. The Sox can only sign players who don’t have a lot of options to play elsewhere

It’s absolutely wild.  The only spot we have multiple prospects at is 2B & 3B and we just blocked them all.  No fucking clue what we are doing here.

Nobody's calling it a good move. It was a bad signing. In the grand scheme of things (neutralizing the negative voices in the clubhouse for a weak manager), I can understand why Getz brought him in. It would have made more sense to bring in Salvatore Perez, but he would have hurt too many SoxTalk feelings.

Yeah, Sal Perez would have made this team a winner!  🤣

So why do you complain about individual moves? Canaan Smith-Njigba, Michael A. Taylor, Joey Bart, all of them would have been pathetic moves, in your eyes. and even if every Tim Hill worked out, you'd still fall back on "nothing will change until Reinsdorf dies". If you can't admit that Perez would have been a better backup catcher than Maldonado, then you're just trolling.

The board consensus was the Perez would be a pretty terrible move...but he turned out to have a great season.

0.8 fwar in 2022, -0.4 in 2023 and then 3.2 out of nowhere as a beaten up to hell catcher in his early 30's, but really 34-36 in terms of overall wear and tear on his body.

Because obviously if you can make enough good moves at the same time, including cheap good moves, you can eventually form some semblance of a team.  Unfortunately, Getz has absolutely whiffed on the majority of his acquisitions and he is no closer to being competitive than he was last year.  And once Getz runs out of a Cease or Crochet to trade away, good fucking luck.

Perez means nothing at this point because Getz never acquired him and the rumors of Sox interest in him sure seem to be BS at this point.  Your Perez argument means nothing.  Getz chose a -1.3 WAR catcher for $4.25 million that he cut loose right around the All-Star break on July 19, 2024.

https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/player/_/id/8524/salvador-perez#:~:text=Salvador Perez signed a 4 year %2C %2482%2C000%2C000,%2422%2C000%2C000%2C while carrying a total salary of %2422%2C000%2C000.

The other BIG problem is that he's owed $24 million (including 2026 buyout) for 2025, and made $20 million in 2024.

For a team that's going to end up between $40-50 million at some point (minus Robert and Benintendi), half of your salary going to be a veteran mid 30's catcher on an inevitable defensive decline would be the definition of insanity.

In the past we’ve seen player driven rebuilds… which is what you’re describing here.

What we are experiencing now is an organization driven rebuild… which will take longer and will require more “wins” outside of free agent signings and trades.

Placing a rookie in the seat of that car while claiming we’d get to our destination sooner because of it… boy, that one’s rich Jerry.

The state of White Sox affairs have unfortunately been moves that don’t fracture a fanbase — they have been moves which totally derail it…

Until it works.

I'm not defending the move. I didn't like it when it happened. I can understand the logic behind it, therefore, I don't need to scream myself hoarse damning it. Getz didn't sign Maldonado because he thought he was getting a 10 WAR catcher at a discount. I don't think it takes a stretch of the imagination to understand that Grifol wanted Maldonado to help control the clubhouse, and Getz, who wanted to fire Grifol anyway, was happy to grant him that sop.

It also took only the tiniest bit of effort to understand that Maldonado was a problem in Houston's clubhouse.

That effort should have been done by the GM or his people and it was not done. This is precisely why we wound up with all those tell-all articles at the end of the year, because basic checks, basic scouting is not done, guys are signed based on reputation. Homework was hard so we didn't do it.

Colson Montgomery fell out of the Top Ten MiLB rankings at SS...couldn't find our Montgomery fielding debate thread.

deVrieze with all the helium to move up fast.

With Montgomery,, either he can't handle gas, and was an overhyped prospect, or his injury caused some problems. He had to face gas before 2024 though.  I will give him the benefit of the doubt, although, I don't think he's a SS.

Amaya will be the one player that I give Getz a pass for if he actually hits.

Bring him back!
