Very well done piece by Fegan on State of the Sox

“A great example is just going through the hiring process and going after the best talent that we can,” Getz said. “Will is a prime example of this, where, OK, we need to show individuals what our organization actually looks like and where it’s going. In professional sports, there are so many individuals who want to take on a challenge because if you get it right, it’s [probably] going to be the most rewarding experience of your career. All of us view that. To be able to overcome what we did last year in these coming years is a great opportunity for so many different people and myself included.”

Fegan VERY skeptical we'll see Colson Montgomery breaking camp with the team...

"The fact that Taylor hit like Danny Mendick last year but still would have easily been the 2nd most valuable position player on the White Sox says something about the guy’s defense. (It, uh, also says something about the 2024 Sox…)

Don’t look now, but the boys in black are rostering THREE Gold Glove outfielders! And like the Mavericks' GM says, “Elite defenders in their 30’s win championships!” Now there’s an executive to emulate!"

Benintendi GG 2019

Luis Robert GG 2020

Mike Tauchman GG 2019

Sadly it is now 2025 and those GG seasons are a distant memory.

Check your sources again.  Benintendi won a GG in 2021, not 2019, and Tauchman never won a GG.

 A commenter to Fegan's article wrote that...actually.

"On a per-inning basis, Mike Tauchman was arguably the best defensive outfielder in 2019: in just 694.1 innings across all three outfield positions (two-thirds of which came in left field), he accrued 19 DRS and 9 Outs Above Average (OAA). The former was tied with Lorenzo Cain and Hunter Renfroe for fourth among outfielders, the latter with Mallex Smith and Keon Broxton for eighth. The difference between Tauchman and the defenders ahead of him, however, was that he did that in more than two hundred fewer innings than those ahead of him — and remember, these are counting stats!

Tauchman, in fact, had played so little relative to his competition that he wasn’t even eligible for the Gold Glove Award, as the award requires you to play 713 innings in the field before the team’s 141st game — more than Tauchman played the entire season."

Also, seems most SFG fans were arguing he was a GG deserving candidate as recently as 2021.

OFC...like with AJ Pollock, playing him in RF might not be as ideal.

So it was Michael A. Taylor that won the GG.  He won a Gold Glove Award and Fielding Bible Award in 2021.

Benintendi was actually runner up/honorable mention in 2021.

So, to summarize...three GG's in Benintendi, Taylor and Robert (shortened 2020 rookie season), Tauchman at that level in 2019/21.

How many times will Jon Schiffren cite that statistic lol?

About as relevant as Nicky Lopez from 2019-21, right?

Where does Fegan even talk about Colson? Are you referring to the comment about Braden?

Yeah...misread it and assumed it was Colson because Braden has never set foot on an MiLB or MLB field as of yet.  So the idea he would make the team was completely preposterous.

That was his point. He was saying those three prospects will be present at camp, even though they have a 0% chance of making the team. So for fans, the most value might come from following spring training, as opposed to the regular season.

He actually said today he thinks Colson is opening day SS

Yikes.

Well this will probably encourage me to check box scores.  It’ll likely be another year of not watching a single game for me, but it looks like MLB & MiLB box scores will get some attention.

If somebody from the Sox is reading this, that’s progress on getting this fan back one day.  I often wonder if my baseball fandom is just done.  It’s weird for sure.

He should be the Opening Day SS.

It's hardly going to sell any more tickets...this is not Kris Bryant's debut we're talking about.

15-25% odds he is an All Star caliber player...that extra year of control would be massive, since the White Sox wouldn't even likely compete for the division until his three arbitration years in 2028-2030...with Braden's debut in 2027.

I’m actually ok with it

If he's REALLY good, JR will never extend him and he will end up getting traded eventually because JR will never give out a $150-200 million extension, let alone $100 million...I'm not sure what's more depressing?

Since it's easier simply to expect failure with Sox prospects and then not be overly disappointed.

There used to be a time that extra year of control was critical to the White Sox, but that went out the window with Burger/Vaughn/Madrigal and then Crochet's situation was quite unique, obviously.

If we shoot for Gavin Lux career-wise, at least he can get a decent trade return in Year 4/5 I guess...

I reserve judgment..kind of, because there have been so many scouting reports on Colson that have questioned his ability to be a major league SS, whether mentioning his tendency to miss the ball at the plate, or his maneuverability/flexibility/lack of quickness on his feet.  If those scouting reports prove correct, at least as to his defense at ss, he might decide to switch to another position. Regardless, he still has to proved he can hit ML pitching in ST.

As Balta's been saying, that's not even proof.

Veterans might be working on just a single pitch...like a secondary offering they're trying to incorporate.

Most of those guys aren't going to be amped to full velocity until the back end of spring training.

You're going to be facing a number of AA/AAA pitchers, in all likelihood.

Remember guys like Ryan Sweeney or Wilson Betemit having huge springs???  It meant absolutely nothing in the overall scheme of things...once the regular season started and you shift from AZ to cold weather/outside baseball, with all the advantage to the pitchers until at least mid-May in Chicago.

Why?

I don’t think it’s the worst thing for him to see what he needs to work on if/when he struggles. It’s not ideal, but maybe selfishly it at least gives me 3 at bats to watch during a game?
