Sounds like none of Drury, Tauchman or Rojas will be ready for opening day. Find me 13 position players.

Lineup:

  • 1B: Vaughn
  • 2B: Baldwin#
  • SS: Meidroth
  • 3B: Vargas
  • LF: Benintendi*
  • CF: Robert
  • RF: Slater
  • DH: Sosa
  • CA: Lee

Bench:

  • BC: Thais
  • IF: Amaya
  • OF: Taylor

Seems like you go with those 12 to start and have to add one of Ramos, Fletcher, or Colas or pickup someone up on waivers.

Hopefully there is an OFer they can grab off waivers as guys get cut.

JR thinks a whole roster of cast-offs will be ultra-entaining for the fans to watch.  Pathetic!

Wonder if Drury is released, could you sign him to a minor league deal and put him on minor league injured list and avoid the 40 man problem.  Alternatively, if during cutdowns,  roster hits 39, you could add him to the 40 then shift to 60 day if needed and reopen the 40 man spot.

The Drury thing makes no sense to me unless 1) his hand is completely toast or 2) this is just a procedural move and they will bring him back on a new contract. Because cutting the best hitter in the spring for what shouldn’t be a long term injury makes no sense to me otherwise.

I thought that too, about it just being a procedural move. Dude earned a spot on the team and the injury is unfortunate for him.

Varland, I had him lumped into the “near-30 guys who we could cut and not bat an eye that we can cut anytime in the offseason” so no loss there.

Actually, Nick Maton probably makes the team.

Good point. He did show good versatility with IF and OF capabilites.

Plus he's from the orioles so fuller would have a background with him and he's also an illinois guy.

Would much rather take a flyer on Maton than Jankowski because there may be offensive upside. However you look at it, Sox OF after Robert and (maybe) Benintendi is brutal. Given the fact they want to trade both those guys,B. Montgomery, McLain, Zavala, and (maybe) Wolkow have huge opportunities ahead. Also, tells you how little they like Fletcher, DeLoach, Colas.

Absolutely. It seems they are ready to start over with this group and are just acquiring stop gap players.

They can't acquire anyone with a long term commitment because they have the group they want a couple of years away.

Will be fortunate to get one 3-4 fWAR out of that group...

Sure. Doesn’t change the fact that they each have a golden opportunity. There are 3 long-term spots just sitting there for them.

There’s a good possibility this team will be just as bad as last year.

To start the year, I agree. Once they have Keel, quero and Montgomery up it will be more interesting at least.

I think the pitching will be better overall.

Apparently, Drury had the option to test free agency if he wasn’t selected for the White Sox’ Opening Day roster and he exercised that right Sunday.

Good luck to him out there. Hard to believe a team is going to take a chance on him until he is 100 percent healthy.

But you're still looking at 2-3 years of development...

Wanna bet? I think one of those four is an Opening Day starter in 2026. There’s literally no one in front of them. It’s a desert.

It makes plenty of sense. He likely had an opt out in his deal if he was not added to 40 man by today. Why would the Sox DFA a younger player just to IL Drury for 2 months? A guy that was literally awful last season, is nearly 33 and just had a hand injury. He's really of no use to the Sox right now if he cannot play. I'm sure they'll try to bring him back on an milb deal if he's willing.

Yes but you can't force prospects to develop before they're ready ... that's what Hahn did for a decade.  Or draft for need/s.

I will say second half 2026 for Montgomery on a fast track considering zero MiLB experience.

Teams are pushing these guys faster now.  Hahn was a man ahead of his time...truthfully, I don't think he rushed players, other than a couple that he drafted for the purpose of rushing them into the current year's pen.
