2025-26 NFL Season Thread

I really was surprised Pete failed that badly, but I do think the thing to zero in no was all of his sons as Assistant coaches. Similar to end of Belicheck era, there seems to be a real decline when the coach gets tired of managing other coaches and just wants those he knows won't leave and won't challenge them.

They've been playing like the Eberflus defense from the past few years ever since the 2nd Packers game. They don't give up a ton of points (outside of the SF game), as they get stops in the red zone and hold teams to FGs. It's effective for keeping the score low, but it also keeps the offense off the field and makes it hard for them to get any real rhythm.

They are a total bend/don't break defense.  Teams move the ball between the twenty's and stall in the red zone.

You have traded players, released players, moved on to draft trades and decided Love is putting up 400 on Saturday, and you are freaking out about Stevenson not playing.  Maybe the coaching staff knows something about Stevenson that you don’t, like the hip injury is still bothering him or his knee is bothering him?  No, just benching him to drive fans nuts?  Thats not reality reactions, thats just being in your feelings after a loss

One thing is clear - Bears are very slow in the secondary.  JJ is clearly hobbled (hopefully it is not permanent and an off-season gets him right) and Stevenson has quickness but whether it is his hip or something else, there is something there.  Biggs reporting made me think maybe they have been trying to limit Stevenson a bit for health reasons - maybe to try and get him right for the post-season.

But Wright, CJGJ, McCloud are all very poor cover corners and 2 of the 3 are very slow (can't speak to McCloud).  Wright has made up for it with big plays but when he isn't forcing turnovers he's pretty regularly getting burned.  When you combine that with a troubled pass rush - you have a D that is going to have real problems.

I hadn't realized how slow JJ was until you saw him just getting cooked on a crossing route by Williams - was just one play but he just looked slow (Williams is clearly elite quick too).

You can't really be anything other than that with the talent (or lack of talent) on the field.  Offensively they still have flaws - but they also have a lot of talent and a good scheme.  Caleb is still young and has lots of room to continue to improve, but that is what has me excited about next season...but lets not let next season be for a while longer!!!

The injuries have been a big problem too.  The linebackers on back have been mostly hurt this year.

While I agree that the bears defense is pretty bad, you look across the playoff field and see a bunch of flawed teams and most of them backed into the playoffs this week.  There is no boogeyman team waiting for you, everyone has problems.  The same team that dropped 42 on the bears last week just lost to the Seahawks and scored only 3 points.  The Seahawks lost to the panthers.  The rams have been super weird for the last month.  The eagles haven’t scored in the second half pretty much all season.  The panthers are the panthers.  It’s such a open playoff field all it takes is one offense to get hot and the defense to not hurt the offense on the way.

I agree and I sure hope we win.  No reason Bears can't do it.  But more highlighting there is only so much a coach can do scheme wise given the severe limitations in talent on the defense.  Hopefully some of it is more shorter lived and a healthy off-season cures some of the holes cause there are a lot of them.  Offensively - there are issues too - slow starts, footwork from QB, next level play, etc.  Oline has still given up more pressure than I'd like (Caleb has done a nice job avoiding it)...but they all have work to do too...but you can also, at least as of now, squint and see a lot of explosive talent on that side of the ball...guys who can trend and emerge as blue chip players.

To be clear though - to win, the offense is going to have to play at a high level, imo.  We know they can do it - but also know it has struggled a bit against the Packers.

They need to come out ready in the first half.  That’s all there is to it.  Earlier in the season they were scoring a lot in the first quarter but that just stopped

There have been way too many games lately where it seems like Caleb has about 80 yards passing when they go to halftime. Usually the 4th quarter heroics seem to balance it out in the final box score, but to your point...they gotta put up some points in the 1st half.

Rams lost to panthers, seahawks looked weak for a half but then beat them by like 20. Seahawks look extremely strong.

Matt Ryan to be named president of football operations for Atlanta.

That actually might be big from the Bears stand point. Matt Ryan and Ryan Poles are very good friends and teammates at BC. Ryan will likely interview Ian Cunningham for the GM job and Poles will likely put in a good word for Ian. Bears could get two 3rd round compensation picks out of it.

Are we really upset that the Bears aren't the prohibitive playoff favorite a year after being the worst team in the NFC Central and being DOA as a team?  Jesus people, enjoy the moment.  This team is at least a year ahead of schedule for the talent on the roster, and that is without even talking about the injuries especially on the defensive side of the ball.

I don't know how big of a loss or not Cunningham will be, but I believe they'd get a 3rd round comp pick this year and than another next year which is great. Hopefully Poles can replace him with another good talent and finally overcome those 3rd round challenges.

I think a few things can be true at once.

On one hand, expectations change for teams quickly in the NFL. Many didn’t think the Bears would win 8 games this year, but when they held the No. 1 seed late in the year, your view of what can be accomplished in a given season changes. And because fortunes can change so quickly in the NFL, you need to capitalize on the opportunity when it’s there. So I think it’s fair to “criticize” a team that now has raised the level of expectation for fans.

On the other hand, I think there are plenty of “fans” that simply don’t want to admit they were wrong, pegged the Bears as a bad team before the season started and simply want to be proven “right”. It’s the day and age we live in and just have to accept people are going to make fools of themselves.

I view things this way: If the Bears lose to the Packers on Saturday, it will be very disappointing and being honest and frank about where this team needs to make improvements will be justified. However, I will still acknowledge the leaps this franchise made over the last calendar year in finding the right coach, seemingly finding a QB they can build around, and being excited about what Year 2 under Ben Johnson will look like, on all sides of the ball. His first draft proved to be pretty fruitful and adding in another class should be a welcome addition, or them taking a big swing at a DE in the trade market. But next season, and basically the two years following (the years that span Caleb’s rookie deal), it’s Super Bowl or bust. They are basically right on schedule. This was the come up year, but next year it’s all-in.

I pointed out yesterday that every asset that they have this offseason needs to be earmarked to defense.  I am not certain there are any holes on offense that need attention but I am not up on contract status either.  The health of the interior line and QB was huge.  Hopefully both of those items are sustainable moving forward.

I like that there is a structure in place to build.  The offense (Johnson) and defense (Allen) are sustainable pieces so moving forward it's all about the talent and cap management.  I do not think Allen gets another job and I hope he and Ben can work together long term.

I have zero expectations for Sunday based on the fact we will have played the Packers 3 times after Thanksgiving and I think  their offense can carve up our defense.  I am hopeful because the game is at home and the offense if it clicks may work out.

The future is bright and regardless of Saturday, this season was a major success in formulating a successful NFL franchise.

Yep, I was wrong as well.  Thought the Bears blew it when they passed on Warren.  They took the guy with more size and athleticism and it is obvious he is developing into exactly what they thought he could be.

BTW — Love that the Bears are playing on Saturday night.
