Grant Taylor not starting is already a source of much consternation...so converting Oppor or Tanner McDougal (he's much likelier than Oppor) will be other "next steps" here.

 

They can trade guys like Martin Perez (hopefully in July), maybe Martin (a lot of posters absolutely HATE that move, the other half are advising it), Adrian Houser...but who are your building your rotation around then after the Smith(s) and Schultz?

Giving up on starters too quickly isn't a good solution either, because we need front line starters as well.  I thought that was previously clear before, but OK.  Also not sure why you are trying to specifically bring other people into things, but sure.

Yeah, people here recently have been anointing the big 3 of the not so distant future as Smith, Schultz and Taylor for the rotation. Now, Taylor is moving to the pen.

And Smith is skipping starts to rebuild his motion because he is hurting.

I didn't read it but did everyone laugh at complaining about bullpen spending? It's like the one place we spend.

Maybe one thing everyone can agree with is you never have too much pitching.

I hate the idea of Taylor becoming a bullpen arm already, but it sure seems like the organization has decided that's his future role.

Yes about half a dozen. Some goal posts were moved to midfield. What a silly premise. We almost only spent money on the bullpen during the "contention" years. It was almost all wasted other than the two years we got from Liam.

I never said I agreed with it. Right now he is in the pen and that's the way they will use him.

Some young starting pitching prospects would never consider (unless forced into) a role as a reliever.  Some of them probably should, particularly those who have big fastballs that probably cannot work in an extended outing. Yes the money for relievers is not going to match that of a top of rotation starter, but if one can make it to the big leagues and stick as a high leverage reliever or Closer, why not?  I thought early on that Kopech should have focused on coming in for a few innings and blowing away hitters with 100mph+ fastballs, but no, he kept insisting that he could be a starter. Sox had Goode Gossage, a pitcher that went to the Yankees and had a 20+ year career as a reliever.

As a franchise we should be doing everything we can to keep our high end guys as starters.  There should be no other options left before we make them relievers.

They don't want a record closer to the Angels. They want the 2026 number 1 pick in the draft.

Angels and Rockies can’t pick in the top 10. Possibly the Nationals are out too? Sox have a golden opportunity to get a top 3 pick in 2026.

So when a team is out of a top 10 pick for a year, does a new team move into the top 10, does the odds for all of the other teams left over get distributed to the other teams, or does a team that can't move up just automatically move down to 10 no matter where their slot get pulled up and the other teams that get slotted behind them just  move up one slot?

 Managers do that in games now.

Pens are so inconsistent in baseball but a quality closer gets paid well.

Odds get reconfigured. So the bottom two teams, Sox and Pirates right now have 22% odds at #1 pick and 3rd team is Baltimore with 17%. Rockies will pick 10th no matter what and Angels and Nats likely 11-12.
