Should have just kept him for now if this is the best offer but here we are.

Dude is a 3rd string, defense first, no hit, catcher who calls a decent game.  If you have him on your roster, you are automatically looking for something better.  He has no value, and we have other catchers who should be playing.

I didn't expect much but an injured 25 year old outfielder who hasn't hit in a couple years and I assume about to be rule 5 eligible (if that matters) seems below my low expectations. Don't see the ne

You needed to sign a catcher like him for this year at the start of the season. I consider it a win you got anything for him, instead of just outright releasing him once Quero was ready.

I agree. He's not worth the plane fare to Charlotte. But I'm also not going to be upset about what they get for Matt Thaiss.

I understand where you’re coming from, but if we’re seriously rebuilding towards contention, you absolutely should care what they get back for one of maybe three guys on this roster with any value to other teams.

We need to hit on small moves like this.

He actually hits pretty well for a catcher. His defense was an issue in LA which is why he was so cheap. I will contend they could have gotten a better return if they were willing to wait. But honestly this is a nothingburger, we have bigger problems.

Good: Traded the catcher it made sense to trade

Meh: Return

I'm not gonna be upset about this. More than I'd have expected for Thaiss in March.

And since they are old, frail vets, they miss much of the season with injuries and net you nothing at all.  See Tauchman and Slater.

Is it August already?

A .400 obp is a valuable thing. I would rather have Thaiss than Lee truth be told. Lee does have a fine arm though.

I'm thinking they should try to sell high on both (Thaiss, having a good defensively and OBP year, Lee: young with control) and sign a rando veteran to backup.

I’m sure they’ll try to move Lee once Teel is ready defensively. As for now, go with the more controllable guy. Plus he gives you a little more power.

If this is selling high, you may as well keep Lee.  What you get back for Lee will probably be worse than Lee himself.  I don’t mind 3 catchers on the roster when one can play 1B or DH.

Just keep Lee and see if he matures a bit his arm is so good that imo you'd hate to give up on him because of a perceived roster crunch.

Idk I would think Lee might have more value.

Yuck. Thaiss is controllable. I would have rather have just carried 3 catchers for now. I'm sure this was the best offer, but it wasn't a good one.

Anyone else notice that Thaiss didn’t catch for like 5 years after being drafted? Only started again in 2022. Not bad for someone who converted back after not doing it at all for a while.

Can Baker replace Taylor? I assume Baker wouldn’t get picked off 2nd with the game on the line and then say it was the right move or whatever.

Baker has been on the injured list since April 22, don't know if he is even healthy enough to try to play right now.

Came to bigs as a 3B.

Yeah during Covid, my friends and I did a MLB The Show 2020 online league and I used the Angels. I used him at C against RHP since his secondary position was C. That’s why I remember it so well or it stuck out to me when Joe Maddon wanted him back at C. I think they carried 3 catchers at the time since he could play CIF as well.

They don't need to do that when they have a history of the position players they draft in the 1st round.

Keeping Vaughn just creates the log jam.

Agreed with the specific group they signed. Maybe something interesting for Martin Perez from a team needing pitching but we know how that’s gone so far.

There's a decent chance Perez eventually decides to have TJS and the Sox will get nothing for him. We should know more on his status as they move into July but I'm not holding my breath given his injury.

Thaiss was useful to this team; and there are several teams with worse backup catchers than thaiss.   Hard to see the reason to give him away like this.

The most recent timeline provided on Perez was 10 to 12 weeks back on May 2nd, which would give him a chance to make it back to the rotation by late July or early August.  That would probably be cutting it too close for him to be dealt.
