You needed to sign a catcher like him for this year at the start of the season. I consider it a win you got anything for him, instead of just outright releasing him once Quero was ready.

I assume Teel is not the catcher coming up and it will be Lee.

Baker sucks but it's not like I expected much for Thaiss. Just needed to clear a spot.

Clears a 40-man spot as well (was just thinking he would go after I saw Scholtens on the mound today. They'll have to make a decision on him eventually).

Didn't expect to get much for Thaiss.  My expectations were met........no one to blame here we move along

“New York-NL”? I mean, I guess. Mets works too.

I'm not sure how Baker is an incentive to make a move.

I would rather have cash considerations. This is what you’d get if you DFA’d Thaiss.  Puzzling. I expected some unknown complex league guy. Oh well. I don’t think Lee matches up well with Quero as both hit better off lefties. The Teel watch begins in earnest now.

Teams dont give up hitting and Thaiss was clearly sell-high situation so i'm fine with it

Not totally sure what to think, but for the time being my interpretation is mostly that the Sox didn't want Lee to languish in AAA just so 30 year old Matt Thaiss *might* make the MLB team marginally better in the near term. And as we know, there's more young catching coming behind Lee too so the logjam was not about to get any better. Don't see a lot to love in Baker, but maybe the Sox have some kind of idea about how to get him back to an .850 OPS guy.

isn't this the same? They aren't paying him a major league salary so that's probably money saved?

I wonder what they see in Baker. He’s basically Jacob Burke with less power. He has not hit really at all since A ball. I couldn’t justify giving him playing time at Charlotte ahead of Fletcher, Julks, or even DeLoach. He is literally Triple A roster filler.

Acquiring a slap hitter?  I’m shocked

dumb move. team paints itself into these STUPID NEEDLESS "roster crunches".

I’m not going to get upset for what they got for Matt Thaiss, a guy I absolutely knew existed before the Sox signed him a few months ago.

Does Getz not believe in A ball lottery tickets at all?  He either trades them for old relievers or instead chooses to acquire bad older prospects that are a year or two from aging out of MLB chances.

I agree. He's not worth the plane fare to Charlotte. But I'm also not going to be upset about what they get for Matt Thaiss.

In a situation like this you are quite literally taking the best offer.  My guess is no one was offering any kind of lottery ticket, instead it was more like a 25 cents off butter coupon.

Can Baker replace Taylor? I assume Baker wouldn’t get picked off 2nd with the game on the line and then say it was the right move or whatever.

Should have just kept him for now if this is the best offer but here we are.
