Vaughn/Elko updates...

Omg you guys just found out about Elko in the last three months, and now he is indespensible and everything they needed but clearly they have tossed him to the curb never to return

holy s%*# he was sent down 10 DAYS AGO

I dont know why the reaction to wanting Elko back is this extreme. I don't see anyone actually saying he's the savior . I want him up since he's an actual 1B who plays 1B. He can also hit for some desperately needed power. I don't believe 31 sporadic at bats were much of a showcase for anyone. If nothing ever comes of him, so be it, but it would at least provide value by pushing Vargas back to 3B.

I have said multiple times I didn’t want him sent down, I just understand that he will come back and whining that “the Sox must not have him in his plans” every day changes nothing and honestly shows that you didn’t care that he couldn’t hit the broadside of the barn when major league pitching saw where to pitch him.

he is just a guy.  When he comes back he will most likely remain a guy, but if you wanna pine for him, it’s all you buddy 👍🏼

I guess the ideal situation would bring back Elko and Teel, jettison Rojas and Capra. Vargas goes back to 3rd, and Teel/Elko/Quero/Lee (to a very lesser extent) are a combo of 1b/catcher/DH everyday.

At that point, you also dump Palacios and bring back Baldwin so he can play IF and OF.

Edit - and Benintendi mixes in at DH a little.

You may be 100% spot on..........I would like to see him get a chance to prove you right.

I have an issue with giving old journeyman guys chances like PALACIOS and many others on this team but giving Elko a real chance.  Maybe he will prove you right BUT maybe he may prove to be a decent MLB player.  I would rather give him a chance then many of the jabronis on the team now.

Again, I said I did not want him sent down.  It’s just not worth crying over

personally, I'd love to see Bryan Ramos figure it out at 3B and let Vargas play 1B full time.  Small sample size, but Ramos had only 1 error in 21 games at 3B last year.

That would be ideal.

Do you think the Sox have him in their plans? You seem to be talking out of both sides there lol.

Who is crying over it by saying  we'd like to see him back up? You are imagining a reaction that doesn't exist. The most "extreme" reaction in this thread, other than your own, even said he's like just a guy, something you agree with.

There's no crying from my part. Just a rational thought process.

I thought they were gonna give him a shot like they did to show he can stay hot and get to Major league pitching.  I was pretty surprised he went down with Vaughn and I said as much when it happened, I thought they would give him a month or more.  But they didn’t, so by my reasoning they are letting him get right in Charlotte again(hopefully) and come up mid season when the trades hopefully happen and the roster spot is just there for him.  I just think the hole in that bat is a bad one, and major league pitching knows it.  I hope I’m wrong

That feels like a wild thing to say. Hilarious, unexpected, but wild. I love it but also…Dusty Baker, right? Was Sosa on those cubs?

In the context of TLR not quite being the baseball genius JR think he is, which was referenced in the post I quoted, it's not a wild thing to say. Dusty Baker certainly benefited from his players juicing, but his one NL pennant (pre Astros) doesn't exactly compare to the three rings Tony has.

Those Yankees also benefitted from some juicing if my memory serves.  Torre should be on that list too

On the one hand you wanted to give him a shot to show he could stay hot and get to Major league pitching and on the other you said there is a hole in his bat that major league pitching could exploit.  The Sox agreed with your latter assessment.

They waited at least two weeks too long from his peak at Charlotte...

Are we intent on turning more valuable defenders into 1B or what! That's dedication.

Nothing like turning a potentially above average bat at a position into an average bat at best

And I’m not defending them sending him down, but it happened.  And it kind of seems like he is scuffling in the same fashion, so maybe it was right.   more time with the major league staff could have helped but it’s water under the bridge now

Isn’t this as simple as they want to make sure him and quero are both getting lots of reps and at bats? Teel the better catcher but having him get time at 1B isn’t a bad thing either to keep him fresh too.

Other than catcher and RF/Braden...where are they going to get even average big league production in the future?

Meidroth and Vargas (3B) maybe...and Bonemer?

They would still need to add at least two legit hitters through free agency.

I take it that the game plan is to trade some of their pitching for some hitters.

You have six pitchers who have undergone TJS just this year, two more are possible. The "top" pitching prospects have struggled this year (as others have specifically pointed out). There may not be pitching to deal as you surmise.

I would like to see Baldwin get some experience in the minors playing 1B.

He was paying CF in Charlotte.

Make no sense to play 1st base.  Soon they will have guys in the pen play 1st base.
