Gentlemen’s agreement. The Cubs are letting Civale throw one more game for the Sox to keep us from 50 wins and top spot in the sports section tomorrow.

No sports section (even in Chicago) is going to care as much about 50 Sox victories as the Rockies passing the infamous 41-121 mark.

I was fine when Civale was acquired, and he pretty much did what the Sox wanted him to do: Eat innings. And I don't really care that he's gone, unless he's replaced by Clevenger. But what I don't understand is how this happened, that he's gone and the Cubs "claimed" him? When I look for an explanation, all I can find is the Cubs "claim" Civale.

Could someone please explain how he was available to be claimed. Did the Sox release him? Did they DFA him? Is there another way a player can be made available to other teams?  Did the Cubs reach out to the Sox and say they'd be glad to take over his salary if the Sox made him available?  If someone knows, please explain the workings of MLB front offices that this could happens so quickly and so unlooked for.

Again, I'm fine with him being gone, but I don't want to see him replaced by Clevenger.

If it is Clevenger today, (as a guy who often defends Getz/ Sox management here), pitching Clevenger is an indefensable misreading of the White Sox fan base. NO ONE wants to see Clevenger pitching for the Sox.

The Sox put him on waivers, and the Cubs claimed him. With the new rules in effect, no trades of major leaguers can occur after 7/31. To clear salary, a team can put a player on waivers, and if they're claimed, the claiming club assumes their contract.

The Angels did the same thing in 2023, when they traded for Giolito and Lopez before the TDL, then after falling precipitously out of the running for a wild card spot, waived both Giolito and Lopez. Cleveland claimed both and assumed their salaries.

Really excited about young positional talent.

The number of players historically that can play a solid SS and plausibly hit 40 bombs in a year is probably very, very small.

IMO, this lineup will be ferocious when Bonemer is at 3B and Braden in RF.

Ellard’s stuff looked really good. Obviously you can’t walk 3 of the 9 guys you face. Gonna be interesting to see if Mead can actually play 3b. Or does Ramos, who is a much better defender, get a shot down the stretch.

Nasty pitch.

pitching is just so fucking awful

they can't fire Katz soon enough

Wikelman’s been good though? Out of that inning several batters ago if Mead wasn’t a terrible defender.

To be fair, both those guys were in AAA 2 weeks ago. Also, Katz mostly works with the starters. I think they gotta fire Matt Wise after two awful years from the bullpen
