I’m not trading our best trade asset for an infielder when you consider what we have in the pipeline/draft.

I get it, but you'd end up with Shaw as your 3B/2B with Vargas at 3B occasionally (or you trade him for something). Shaw has a shot to be a good player, and they could always look to trade him or trade some of their infield prospects down the road for help in other areas. I try to never assume a team has "too much" of anything.

Why are people comparing Bregman to Tucker.  Is Tucker going to sign for $175 million?

No, but the Cubs don't have enough money for both, and they certainly could have signed Tucker with the money they have. Bregman is a damn good player but he's already 32. He's been a 3.5-4.4 fWAR guy for the last three years, and I don't expect that to go up at 32. He's probably still a 4ish WAR guy next year but he's in his decline. Tucker is 4 years younger and has been a consistent 4.5 fWAR guy. You're likely going to get that production for a few years longer than Bregman, and RF is a bigger hole than 3B was for them.

They also spent a lot of resources to only get Tucker for one season.

At no point do I ever want Matt Shaw on my team because I will always actively root against him.

It’s unfortunate that Matt Shaw did something so grievous to you that you would have to actively root against him if he was ever a member of your favorite team.

As do the prospects that the Sox would have to trade to get Shaw.  And the way he’s hyped, it would be a heavy cost.

Or, would you trade Shane Smith for him?  I might if he had that war playing CF.

I love a run this long about a potential trade exactly zero industry sources are speculating about. It’s not a rumor. It’s baseball fanfic. It tells how long the wait until pitchers and catchers report is going to be.

I saw the “hot” label on this thread and thought something happened, only to read thinkpieces about Matt Shaw getting traded to the Sox.

I'm not as high on Quero as some due to his lack of power and ehh defense so far. I'd look to maximize his value in a trade. Shaw was hyped, but he had a decent first year and there are apparently some makeup concerns, plus they have nowhere to play him right now unless he can play RF, where his current hitting would hurt his productivity unless he really turns it on. There's a lot of factors you can argue will reduce Shaw's value in a trade, though it's still probably not likely they move him for Quero + some low level guy like I'd want. I'd still be calling the Cubs.

I'm not trading any pitching right now. They need too much of it.

What else we gonna do? Bears won already.

I don’t want to turn this into a big thing because there’s no point, as Timmy joked about, but think this post through. Are you honestly indifferent about people’s behaviour if it doesn’t directly affect you? I doubt it.

Anyways, regardless on anyone’s thoughts about Matt Shaw, I can’t imagine it happening.

The specific scenario we were talking about was a baseball player getting permission from his team and confirming that his teammates would be okay with him missing a game to attend the funeral of his friend.  The guy did not potentially commit a crime, which was one of the comparisons made (Clevinger).  I don’t feel I need to comment on this any further because quite frankly it’s ridiculous.

I don’t think that’s what PaleAleSox was referring to. But you knew that already.

Then it’s an even worse stance hating on someone over that, rather than thinking he is a bad teammate for missing a game.

Once again, that isn’t the argument. My point was that it’s perfectly normal to take a stance on things that don’t directly affect you. I don’t know why you keep making it about something else.

Ive got bad news for you my friend, you already root for, and have rooted for people like Matt Shaw.

Welp, it's over.  None of us should ever have morals or standards again. This is absolutely a copout.

And it's not like it was his mother's funeral. It was a memorial for a neighbor he only knew about a year.

And really, normal, busy people split up, where the wife hits the wake and the husband hits the funeral, and everybody's checking email and texts at the after-luncheon. Shaw was there to "support" a national celebrity he was a neighbor with for a year at a stadium. His absence probably wouldn't have been noticed, you know, with the President and others attending.

Normal people would have sent a card, then called, if they were that close. It was a serious character issue with the choice Shaw made.

Well, not so outwardly.

Apparently WestEddy gets to dictate how long a friendship must last for someone to attend a friend’s funeral.  The guy got permission from his team to attend and also made sure his teammates would be okay with him missing the game to attend.  But since it wasn’t his mother’s funeral, he shouldn’t even think about attending?  Okay…

Quote

Shaw explained that he met Kirk last offseason in Arizona, where they lived in the same apartment complex. They struck up a friendship that centered around their religious faith and Kirk’s Cubs fandom. Kirk often would text Shaw after Cubs games. Kirk’s wife, Erika, reached out to Shaw and invited him to attend the service in Arizona.
