2025 Rule 5 Thread

Chicago White Sox

Link them up with our new "grip expert" pitching coach. Honestly fairly excited about the 26 season. Getting the draft hit and the bonuses from just being so damn bad record wise have us primed to rebound to regular bad with some real upside assuming the 27 season happens.

Shane Smith, Mike Vasil, those guys are awful. Hate that they’re on the team.

The fact that you don't realize how embarrassing it is to have your All-Star and "best player" for the first half be the 41st man on other teams is hilarious at bare minimum.

I know nothing about the two guys we selected but there is now an “Alexander Alberto” and “Alexander Albertus” in the system.

They're just conjugations of the same verb, Alexander Albertar

yo Alexander Alberto          nosotros Alexander Albertamos
tu Alexander Albertus
usted Alexander Alberta           ustedes Alexander Albertan

Perhaps of note, in the minor league phase of the rule 5 draft, no players from the White Sox were chosen.  This may be a sign of how the rest of the league values the depth of our system.

Well, first of all, recent signings are not eligible, so it's how the league views older players. But, yeah, the Sox have a really strong Top 9. After that, it's anyone's guess as to anyone being good. I'm smoking the Hopium for guys like Larson, Hodge, and Christian Gonzalez to make leaps, but 10-50 in the system is pretty thin.

I was literally getting ready to say what he said didn't actually disqualify what you said.

There is still some fat on the 40 man roster that can be trimmed.  I just struggle seeing how we can carry two Rule 5 guys in our bullpen next year with some of the other pitchers in place (including Gilbert with no options).  That being said, maybe you bring both into camp, get a good look at them, and then proceed for with one of them on the major league team.

I hear you. Gene Watson was on CHGO yesterday with Sean Anderson and was explaining how these 2 picks are very similar or the equivalent to 3rd round picks out of college because of the age. And that the Sox do have a plan in place to help both of them to succeed here. Now. Whether they do is another question.  Actually, I find the second pick as the one with the greater chance to stick around all year in the bullpen.

Fully agree.

That's some Olympic-level spin

He is quite literally correct.

-A major league roster is 40 players.

-The Brewers decided there were 40 other players in their system worth protecting other than Shane Smith.

-For the White Sox, he was their front line starter and all-star.

All-Star selections are weird. Nobody on the Sox really deserved to be selected. The vets were hum-drum, younger guys like Sosa and Vargas didn't particularly stick out as good enough, but each team gets a player on the team. Smith looked great for a couple of stretches. He also came from a very good pitching organization who had a true roster crunch. Good scouting, good coaching on picking him up and keeping him maintained.

I don't find that embarrassing. Maybe I'm just built different.

What am I missing?  Soxtalk is now mad at the team because Shane Smith was good?

You're supposed to feel deeply ashamed because the All-Star selection from a team that just lost 121 games wasn't one of the best players in the game with first round pedigree and home developed. I generally feel sad for people who feel the need to castigate others for not feeling properly embarrassed about nebulous things.

How stupid are the Guardians, to guarantee a roster spot to a guy that a 121 loss team wouldn't even protect? Worst run organization in MLB.

And there are people who don't realize just how embarrassing that is. It's like dumpster diving behind a restaurant that got shut down by the board of health, and coming away with a bloody, moldy rag for dinner.

Sure.  But I think if the Brewers knew how Smith would perform they would have protected him.  A more accurate way to look at it would be the #1 starter and all star for the Sox would have been a #3/#4 starter and NOT an all star on about 25 other teams.

To discount the success Smith had just to say how much the Sox suck is not fair to Smith.

The sad part is that the Sox had to pillage another team’s player and he wound up being their best starter by far.  Awesome that Getz and crew were able to identify Smith’s talent, but sad that they don’t have their own equally talented pitchers on the team already.  Burke and Cannon are not that guy.  I think that is the point that was being made.

But then how embarrassing is it that the Twins' 41st best player was taken by the Tigers and started in CF and was 4th best on the team in bWAR? But while Tiger fans are running away and hiding for the shame, the Brewers just signed him to a major league contract. How embarrassing is it that the Brewers are guaranteeing a 26-man spot to a guy who was only another team's 41st best player, and then he wasn't even good enough for the team who picked him to keep him?

Maybe the moral is that any sports fans who give a s%*# about what other people should be embarrassed about...should be embarrassed.

Well, I never used the word “embarrassing”.  I said that it is “sad” that the Sox didn’t already have similar starting pitching talent as Smith.  That is an indictment of the Sox, not the Twins, Tigers, or Brewers.
