The ol’ “at least we got a top 100 prospect for him!” 🤣

  • Put me on record — this is stupid. Offense-starved team refuses to give a shake to a young cost-controlled player who can hit a little bit. Maybe the skeletons will suddenly fall out of the closet to

  • This seems like an absurdly stupid trade that I can't see the vision on from any angle.

  • It's refusing to eat the contract.

You know the dialogue here is getting silly when there's suggestions about trying him in the outfield.

Not just once but constantly.I guess they figure Andrew Vaughn did it very poorly why not Sosa. Just another imagined shortcoming by the fan geniuses along with not teaching outfielders to call flyballs which kids are taught from the time they get on the diamond.

Where does this Rich guy fall on Sox prospect lists? Never heard of him until today.

What top 100? The White Sox one?

Top 100 Sox players from Winston Salem through Kanny, complex ball in AZ and the Dominican SL.

maybe…

He isn't on it. He's a lotto ticket type player.

Why is it unreasonable to question why they did not try to see if Sosa could play the OF in winter ball or spring training? We had Eloy out there for how many years? I don't remember Viciedo being a gold glover. Jon Jay. Juan Pierre. Many others. Our offense is a problem and Sosa was productive offensively last season when he was given at bats which he was not this season.

Teahen and Josh Fields.

Palka and Gavin "Holy" Sheets, wanted to move Burger to 2B/RF.

Would random fan geniuses actually do worse than 29th in mlb over the last fifteen plus years with all the money they had to spend from 2011-2023?

Seems dubious.

Are you calling me a genius? Thanks, I appreciate that.

"There are certainly flaws in Sosa’s profile but the Jays felt they needed to bolster the position player group and there aren’t many options for doing that at this time of the year. Sosa has some pop and some flexibility, even if he’s not a standout defender. If things go especially well, he can be controlled for three more seasons after this one. But since he’s out of options, it’s also possible he gets squeezed in the coming weeks if the guys on the IL can get healthy.

For the Sox, as mentioned, Sosa was one of their better hitters last year but has been pushed into a part-time role this year. He is only 26 years old, so they could have held onto him, hoping for improved plate discipline and/or better defense going forward. But that would be hard to do with limited playing time and no ability to be sent to the minors, so they’ve cashed him in for future talent.

If they get any payoff from Rich, it won’t be soon. He was just drafted last year out of high school, in the 17th round, and is only 18 years old. He hasn’t yet appeared in an official game since being drafted. He doesn’t appear on lists of the top prospects in the Jays’ system, so he’s a long-term lottery ticket for the Sox. They could also add more talent later, depending on the player to be named later."

Doesn't look like much of a prospect, but maybe he is or will be. Still better than trading for an org guy. Would have preferred a pitching prospect. Return seems light, but that's just the way it is.
When it is ptbl or cash considerations, I'm guessing it won't be much of a player.

It’s not. It’s more deflection from the diehard Getz defenders. It has happened in the past and it still happens today. Sosa is obviously not a great infield defender but comparing him to Andrew Vaughn is insincere. Last time I checked, Vaughn can’t realistically play 2B and 3B even if the Sox put him at those positions a handful of times in his Sox career.

It’s not like the return for Sosa is anything worthwhile. It would have been a better move for the team to have Sosa learning LF over winter ball and in ST and discuss DFA’ing Benintendi who adds nothing to the team. Getz knew Sosa was one of their leading power hitters last season, was only 25/26 years old, and wouldn’t be a free agent until 2030. Why would you not come up with a offseason plan with the roster to get him at bats to see if he could continue to improve? The Sox have holes at both LF and DH (especially against lefties). And I get it, Jerry probably doesn’t want to admit failure on the Benintendi signing with two years left but we all already know that’s precisely what it is.

It seems to me there is a simple reason he didnt get tried in LF but as fans we are not privy to every decision made. That does not mean the Sox didnt think of it. Who knows maybe Sosa didnt want to or he's just not athletically what they had in mind for the position. Neither are most of the guys you mentioned and Benintendi.

However , the Sox started 1-5 and what are they now 6 and 10 so playing .500 because of a big turnaround by the pitching staff and perhaps better defense including the OF. Certainly wasn't because of the hitting.

They miss Teel, Baldwin ,Vasil ,Hays maybe even Periera. They actually have 5 OF who can play better defense than a guy with limited athletic skills and they might throw Antonacci into that mix.

Some of the people suggesting he be tried in LF are the ones saying he had no value. If you think he couldve had more value playing in the OF that notion is rather odd. He was probably mentioned more than anyone besides Beni who had no defensive value. It's just hard to imagine that a guy with the Sox as long as Sosa was here (9 yrs) wouldnt have been tried in the OF if he had any desire to play out there or exhibited any of the skills necessary for it.

Hell some people are bothered that Antonacci is playing LF even after he displayed the right attitude and said he'll play anywhere he's needed. The whole positional versatilty argument is odd here amongst fans. Most organizations draft a lot of middle of the diamond types who are the ones with enough athletic ability to do that. The Sox have done it a lot more than they used to. In general thats a good thing. Sosa likely just didnt fit the modern day profile for it nor is he particulay skilled at getting on base.

Top 100 MiLB lists. Can’t seem to find the exact publication to link for everyone but I know it wasn’t Baseball America or the official MLB list. Pretty sure it was something like “horseshit hi8is pulled out of his arse.”

I could be wrong… but I’m almost positive that was it.

Sosa is a better fielding third baseman and hitter than Miguel Vargas, so that should have been his position. Put Vargas at first (his strongest position) and DH Murakami (who can't exactly pick 'em), or vice versa.

They could have traded Andrew Benintendi for some kid who will probably never make the majors. Better yet would be to actually improve the team now with any trades, rather than use this team as a baseball incubator.

If the Sox actually believed that was true vis a vis Vargas they wouldn’t have basically sidelined Sosa.

For some reason, I don't think giving away Lenyn Sosa is going to cost the White Sox any championships.

You’re right but Getz received more for Sosa.

I definitely agree with this, it just seemed like the entire process devalued him a lot and you end up with a 17th rounder. Just seems very odd

Say what you want about Getz but he is consistant, he traded Cease, Robert Jr, and now Sosa and received nothing in return.
