David Sandlin - have we found yet another ace?

Featured Replies

Absolutely historic first start. 61 pitches through 6 innings. 18 straight retired. FILTHY movement on his pitches. That sinker especially. Sweeper and curveball have nice late break. Topping out at 99 MPH.

Has Chris Getz found yet another ace? Absolute wizardry getting Sandlin in the Robert trade.

His xERA for yesterday was 1.37 per Statcast with a xBA of .141. So yes he got lucky, but not nearly to the degree you are suggesting.

If he can stay healthy then he’s gonna shove. Before we anoint he at an ace level, we need to just focus on health and stamina.

No, but he did look like he has some future in the league which would be a small win.

Fastball velocity was solid, but shape and command were not very good. He threw a lot of non-competitive pitches out of 61, and the Twins helped him out by being aggressive. Didn't have too many swinging strikes, and his zone contact rate was really high (meaning he wasn't really fooling anyone with strikes). His out of zone contact rate was also really high (would be top 5 in baseball), so in general he was pretty hittable but ran a .000 BABIP.

Honestly, kind of similar to this years version of Sean Burke with less swing and miss through one start.

He doesn't know what the hell he is talking about either. A total casual.

To answer the question which I assume was posed retoricly, the answer is, 'who knows after ONE start.'

Didn't really say anything about luck beyond citing BABIP and wasnt discrediting the performance.

Twins also have the lowest team xBA in baseball.

Hicks is absolutely terrible but the trade is looking good now. The Sox can afford a guy like Hicks, but they can’t afford a young starter with the potential of Sandlin.

Still, it is just one start and he did look like he may have some control issues in the minors.

I would settle for a solid 2-3 WAR starter that can give you around 150 innings at league average ERA for a few years. Just not having a flame hole every 5th day sometime soon will be another step forward for the club. Right now we just need one more guy to step up.

Does Boston have any interest in trading for Leasure?😁

Does Sandlin have a chance to be our 6th AL All Star?

Murakami, Colson, Vargas, Martin, and Grichuk seem like locks.

They originally wanted him in the Hicks trade

Like the optimism but I'll be happy just getting 3 of the first 4 in. I have a feeling Vargas gets snubbed.

If he gets called up earlier in the season, absolutely he does. I'm still not ruling it out at this point.

@ron883, your nickname should be “The Front Runner”.

While it is a bit early to start thinking this way. It's fun to imagine a rotation of Martin, Burke, Sandlin, Schultz and Shane Smith finding his stuff again.

Then if anyone falters maybe Hagen Smith McDougal ,and Oppor overcome their obstacles and a few more develop.

Things never turn out the way we think they will but Getz has done things with 0 money to work with just snatching bodies and arms and learning how to wheel and deal like a poor street kid. He hustles.

He's playing 3 card Monte , street craps & picking pockets . He's the Artful Dodger from Dicken's Oliver Twist starring JR as F a g i n.

Edit : I had to spell it with the spaces otherwise it changed it to f**in. I had no idea that character from the Dicken's novel would get flagged as inappropriate because it starts with F A G

Saying Getz got him in the Robert trade is just giving cover for Jerry being cheap.

But Sandlin looked real fucking good.

I don't expect any more than 2 given the limited number of spots., Murakami and Martin .Still a long way from that game though so I'll just stick with the 2 most likely as of this point in time.

He's swung and missed a bunch but you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. Things are going to get tougher as we won't have the ability to churn so many 40 man candidates and have the first overall rule 5 pick anymore but he's done exactly what you'd want in a rebuild situation.

Got him after the Robert trade with money provided by the Mets paying off his full salary is much more accurate and generally accepted story judging by what Getz said to the press after the trade when asked if the money would be spent to help the 2026 roster. Not many believed it would be but shortly after those 3 transactions followed

So got him as a result of the Robert trade so it was a salary dump 1st. Without that money JR wasn't going to pay for anything but Mune. With it Getz was allowed to spend another close to $25M or whatever those 3 transactions cost.He got $22M I believe from the Mets ( full salary and buyout).

Right and in his position he's going to miss a bunch because he's grabbing a bunch of low cost rejects. I said this would be his path probably over a year ago. That he would burn through a bunch of bodies trying to find semi permanent pieces while filling in other spots with prospects. No question he's been learning on the job .

Luis' option didn't need to get picked up. That was money that was never committed, but Getz was determined to get value for Robert after years of striking out on it.

If he never picks up the option they can just go ahead and get Sandlin/Hicks. We'd be missing...Acuna.
