From MLB.com this afternoon:

Q: Hey Mark, can you lie to me and tell me the White Sox are going to be big players at the deadline this year?

Feinsand: Why wouldn't the White Sox be a player? After the past few seasons they have endured, the Sox know how tough it is to contend. Assuming that Chicago continues to hang around the top of the AL Central and/or the AL Wild Card race, I think Chris Getz will add to the roster for the stretch run. Now, I'm not suggesting that the Sox will trade away their top prospects for a rental like Tarik Skubal, but if there's an opportunity to acquire players under control for another year or two, there's no reason for them not to do that. Adding a starter or two (think of guys like Seth Lugo, Michael Wacha, Reid Detmers, etc.) would not be a surprise at all.

The only types of trades that would make sense is if they:

1.) Trade mediocre to nothing prospects for a meh rental starter.

2.) Trade Jacob Gonzalez and lesser prospects for a youngish starter with additional years of control.

#2 is probably a stretch and expecting too much.

They wouldn't get the comp pick. You have to be on the same team in the majors for the full season prior to free agency.

This is why I hate off days.

It fuels the mental illness of trade frenzy and we assume every GM is naive.

I hope you aren’t responding to my post above. I thought it was completely reasonable.

Question: On your #2, do you think Gonzo plus, perhaps some lower level prospects be enough to get a decent reliever or even a rental high leverage guy like Aroldis Chapman from Boston ? I'm not sure I would make that trade, but the back end of the Sox bullpen looks like it may be falling apart. Grant Taylor seemed like the answer as our Closer, but ...I don't know now.

I think your assessment is correct. We aren’t going to be happy with the cost of a guy like Chapman. I’d rather trade some scrub prospects for some decent rental relievers, but not a top guy like Chapman. Trading away the future, even Gonzalez, isn’t worth the slim chance that this team goes deep in the postseason… which it won’t anyways because they don’t have the starters needed.

I agree with WE and Cali’s opinion here. This is the natural progression of a rebuilding team, and they have jump-started it earlier than expected. I don’t think they are ready yet, but they look to be getting there. I wouldn’t trade anyone that could help them in the near future to chase a postseason dream for this year.

This team is still so young. The lineup looks good. The problem is that they still don’t have a good enough rotation, and I have zero hopes that Jerry will spend on one until Ishbia takes over. And you need to sign some FA starting pitching at some point to bolster a championship rotation.

I think many here are unfamiliar with what prices have been at the trade deadline as of late. Outside of truly elite rentals or guys with extended control, prices aren’t all that crazy. There is also a wide gap between top 100 prospects and “scrub” prospects. Those guys in between have trade value, but are far from guarantees and don’t automatically mean we are punting the future by trading them. Self scouting is key and trading some of those guys to augment this year’s team is going to be key.

Look at Grichuk's production, he was an in-season F/A signing and fits into your narrative. The big splash might look like the smart move, but it doesn't always work out.
