They didn't "give up" on him, they wanted more resources for the draft for the future and he has no where to play currently.

Trading a player for other assets is not "giving up" on them. No one asks why the Sox "gave up on" Crochet

I think this is valid. We need to look at it this way. But like you, it was tough for me to see him go.

I find this sentiment interesting. The guy's career was dead up until 2 months ago. He might be great in the long run, but he had no future here. Better to trade at the top then the bottom.

Yes and no.

Like you said he might become a very good player, and really, two month ago he was leading (or right up there) the minor leagues in homers. So, it didn’t start just two months ago.

But I have to agree, he had nowhere to play, which is a nice statement on how much the White Sox depth has improved.

I won't name names even if "giving up" was not quite the reason since he had a very good year before the trade.

We always overvalue our own guys. And some just thought he was too good to trade.

In essence they did because they weren't going to pay him given JR's standing philosophy. You can discuss if that is a good thing or not but it's a fact other teams don't seem to have those misgivings.

We see pitchers get traded by non competing teams all of the time. And I don't know if JR's view of not giving pitchers long term contracts is a bad one. Might be the only thing I agree with him on.

JR's policy may very well be correct as far as 'fiscal responsibility' (his words) is concerned.

The problem is very few of the other MLB teams subscribe to it which puts the White Sox at a disadvantage.

Reinsdorf has extended starting pitchers. When it came around to Giolito and Cease, both of them were more interested in free agency, I believe. No, JR doesn't want to give out 10/$400M deals to 31-year old pitchers. I don't blame him.

I don’t know but we will regret this trade. He is a first rounder also traded for no immediate help.

It happens... so the alternative is to not do it and lose quality pitchers because of the injury risk factor?

Again it may be fiscally sound but as stated other teams don't have the same reservations which puts the Sox at a big disadvatage.

If I'm still around it will be interesting to see what Ishbia's policies are regarding contracts, free agency et al.

We'll see how it eventually plays out. To those who say he had no place to play, he's a shortstop by trade. Acuna could have easily been DFA'd. Nothing wrong with having that kind of talent on the bench maybe starting two games a week.

A lot is going to depend on how good Thome's kid turns out to be.

Romo is just awful on challenges. Should be advised not to challenge unless 200% sure, not on his first at bat/early innings, and never unless is to avoid a strike out or a game situation. He has not earned the right to have a free hand on this.IMO.

Immediate help to the Franchise . YES . Extra draft money and 1 extra draft pick and the ability to use that extra money for various purposes and an extra what amounts to an early 2nd round pick in what was considered a deep draft, is certainly beneficial to rebuilding the farm system for future teams.

Being a big market team it could be many many years before we have another chance to take so many good players in the draft. This was a once in 50 years occurrence. Last time the Sox had the 1st overall pick was 1977.

It's like we want everybody we trade to quickly be exposed as garbage, and everyone we trade for to be diamonds in the rough who turn into instant All-Stars with one overlooked tweak. Gonzo's a good kid. I hope we come to regret the trade right up to and through his HOF induction.

Landon Thome is a first round talent who took a haircut to play for the Sox. Right, let's pass that up because a few people don't want the Sox drafting kids of Sox employees. "Remember, that one time didn't work out, so we should clearly pass on a first round talent giving the Sox a hometown discount."

There's also a higher risk these days with their injuries and the timing of them as well. It's nice they get big money but they are still overpriced.
