This wasn't suppose to happen. There's plenty of trade frenzy but we need to stop acting like this is a veteran team that must make the playoffs. It wasn't too long ago we thought the Sox were strong at catcher. Who knows what they will do but it is possible Getz says this team is not ready yet. Sure it will be nice to see a postseason appearance but that will be what it is and not a serious threat. Push for the offseason instead of the trade deadline.

I agree but also at this point the dugout mood matters and we don't want to discourage that. A tepid buying trade of our like 8th best guy, 15th best guy and a lotto ticket for a middling SP under control for another year or two, and a middling useful reliever relative to our internal options, with us picking up 5 million makes a lot of sense.

I'm not saying you are wrong but you also have to consider the fan blowback if they do nothing at the deadline and potentially risk a playoff spot.

The organizations credibility overall with the fan base is not good based on history especially recently.

That's the horns of the dilemma they face right now.

Now factor in there may not even be a season next year, anything can happen.

I think it was last week someone wrote they wished the Sox could go on a run like Boston.

I wrote that wasn't possible because the pitching isn't consistent enough.

Tonight is an example of what I was talking about.

Now I don't blame Schultz. He's been put in a tough spot, trying to learn on the job.

That's not a big deal when you are 15 games out and nothing is on the line from a team standpoint.

But something IS on the line, fighting for a potential divisional title and home field advantage in the playoffs. And the Sox have done extremely well at home. THAT's a big deal.

It's not fair what the Sox are doing to him and its not fair to the other guys on the club.

They need to get starting pitching help at the deadline and do so without sacrificing the future.

It will be a real test for Getz and his staff.

It's now 10 times this month total they've scored three runs or less in a game.

That’s two Beavis’s since Saturday. 3-2 looks pretty good with two shutouts in 5 games.

Sounds like we need to pick up a fat contract of a former star on a losing team that's on the decline and hope he can pitch like days of old for a couple of months. It's worked in the past, right?😎

That acquisition doesn’t really fit his description of a “fat contract”. Liriano was in his last season with the Twins in 2012 and was an impending free agent. Liriano earned $5.5 million that season. Obviously they gave up too much talent in Eduardo Escobar, but the Sox only had to pick up $2.1 million of Liriano’s money for the remainder of the season. The Sox picked up $27 million remaining on Shields’ contract.

DJ and Len were saying he's intentionally lowering his velocity to improve his control. He doesn't have the extension necessary to make a 94mph heater feel like 97-98.....a 94mph heater isn't difficult to hit. Not to mention, the velocity difference between his fb and offspeed become less, leading to far less swing and miss. If he can't K batters, he's not going to be successful in MLB. He needs to work on his control when throwing as hard as he's capable of throwing in a starting role.
